Luffy, Zoro, Nami, and Usopp were still talking about their failed attempt to get money to buy a ship from Kaya.
Kon turned to them,"Me and Goku are gonna train a bit on the shore. Meet us here when you get the ship!"
Before anyone could reply, he and Goku sprinted off, kicking up sand.
'Time to get stronger,' Kon thought,
'Gotta master that Observation Haki Old Man Iroh taught me.' He stopped near the water's edge, the waves lapping at his feet.
Goku hopped around, gathering small rocks from the shore, piling them up. "Alright, Goku, it's time to train that Observation Haki thing again," Kon said, his voice full of determination.
Goku gave Kon a smirk as he juggled four rocks with his four hands, ready to start.
Kon closed his eyes, taking a deep breath, his mind drifting back to one of Iroh's last lessons on Skyloft.
'Focus, Kon,' he thought, picturing Iroh's kind smile.
---Flashback---
Kon sat cross-legged. Iroh stood before him, his voice calm but firm. "Observation Haki is something all races can learn. Some have a natural talent, some awaken it through hard work, and some are born with it. Skypieans have a knack for it, but our people, Kon, have a lesser talent for it too."
Kon tilted his head, curious. 'Observation Haki sounds cool,' he thought, leaning forward.
Iroh continued, "Every bender has the potential to awaken it. Observation Haki grants extrasensory perception—sensing emotions, presence, strength, intent, and at higher mastery, even seeing the future."
He paused, smiling. "The most common use is sensing the presence of others, even if they're hidden or far away. With full mastery, you can see them clearly, miles away."
Kon's eyes widened. 'Thats probably how mom and dad can find me whenever I hide from them. They cheated!'
Iroh's smile grew. "Our race isn't tied to gods and dragons for nothing. We can use Observation Haki to sense elements too—like air, earth, or water. That's especially useful for your bending, Kon. Care to tell me why?"
Kon scrunched his face, thinking hard. After a minute, he answered, "I'd be able to sense earth, water, or air far away and control it. You need to know where the element is to bend it."
Iroh nodded, proud. "Correct. The stronger your Observation Haki, the farther you can sense and manipulate elements. Imagine you're at sea, no land in sight. There's always earth under the ocean—if your Haki reaches that far, you can bend it."
Kon's jaw dropped. 'Earth from the ocean floor?' he thought, amazed.
Iroh continued, "Or on land with no water source, you could sense water in clouds or moisture in the air miles away and bend it into waves. And air? Don't get me started." He chuckled, his eyes twinkling.
"Wow, that'd be so cool," Kon said, bouncing.
"It is cool," Iroh said, his tone serious. "But Observation Haki's other benefits are just as valuable. It prevents sneak attacks and lets you gauge an enemy's strength. Stay calm, Kon, and it'll come to you."
---Flashback End---
Kon opened his eyes, the memory fading as he stood on the shore. 'I didn't get it before I left home, but I'm gonna nail it now,' he thought, determined.
Goku juggled the rocks, waiting for his signal. Kon took another deep breath, remembering Iroh's words: 'Observation Haki works best when you're calm.'
"Okay, Goku, now!" he shouted, closing his eyes again.
Goku hurled the rocks one by one, their faint swishing cutting through the air.
Kon focused, trying to sense their presence without relying on his air-bending. 'Don't block them with wind,' he thought, forcing himself and the air around him to stay still.
The first rock whizzed past his ear, and he dodged, grinning. 'Got it!' But the second clipped his shoulder, and the third smacked his leg.
He grunted, stumbling but staying upright. 'Ouch, that stings,' he thought, gritting his teeth. 'Gotta feel the rocks, not hear them.'
He kept trying, dodging a few more but getting hit by others. 'This is harder than I thought,' he thought, his frustration growing.
'Old man Iroh made it sound so easy.* Suddenly, the rocks stopped coming. Kon frowned, confused, and opened his eyes.
Goku stood frozen, his four hands empty, staring at something in the distance. Kon followed his gaze and saw a man in a long coat moving backward across the shore in an oddly elegant motion, like he was dancing in reverse.
'Who's that guy?' Kon thought, tilting his head. 'He's moving weird.' Goku chirped, mesmerized, his eyes wide.
'Goku's totally into it,' Kon thought, chuckling. "Hey, Goku, focus! We're training!"
But Goku kept staring, mimicking the man's backward steps with his four arms. 'He's gonna want to dance like that now,' Kon thought, shaking his head.
Kon tried to refocus, closing his eyes again. 'Calm, calm,' he thought, breathing deeply.
'Feel the air, feel the rocks.' He imagined Iroh's voice guiding him, picturing the elements around him. 'There's air everywhere, but I gotta sense it farther.'
He stretched his senses, trying to feel the breeze beyond the shore, the waves, even the distant clouds. 'Nothing yet,' he thought, frowning. 'Maybe I'm not calm enough.'
Goku chirped again, snapping Kon out of his focus. The man in the coat was gone, and Goku was back to gathering rocks, tossing them up playfully.
'Show-off,' Kon thought, grinning. "Alright, let's try again," he said, closing his eyes. 'This time, I'll dodge every rock.' Goku hurled another, and Kon sidestepped, feeling the air shift slightly.
'That's it!' he thought, his heart racing. But the next rock hit his arm, and he groaned. 'Still not there,' he thought, rubbing the bruise.
He kept training, dodging and getting hit, his frustration mixing with determination.
'Old man Iroh said hard work would help awaken Observation Haki,' he thought, gritting his teeth.
'I'm not giving up.' Goku chirped encouragingly, tossing rocks faster. Kon ducked one, then another, starting to sense their paths better. 'It's working!' he thought, his confidence growing. 'I'm feeling something!'
But the training session was cut short as he heard footsteps approaching. 'Probably Luffy and the others,' he thought, opening his eyes. He looked at Goku, who was now juggling rocks again, showing off.
He sat on the sand, catching his breath, waiting for the crew to join them. 'Hope they got that ship,' he thought, his mind drifting to sweets and a big deck to eat them on. 'And maybe a circus room for Buggy.'
