Chapter 11: Fallout and Familiar Faces
National City. Home of Supergirl, CatCo, and, apparently, a never-ending supply of villains with daddy issues. Adam, having just unlocked the glorious ability of Mind Control, felt like a kid in a candy store. "Seriously, System, you're spoiling me. First teleportation, then illusions, then energy blasts, and now I can make people spontaneously believe they're a teapot? This is the dream. The weird, nanotech-fueled dream."
[SYSTEM: Temporal Jump Complete. Destination: National City. Objective: Observe Supergirl S01E10: "Childish Things". Suggestion: Utilize new abilities for optimal narrative disruption.]
"Narrative disruption? My middle name, System. My middle name," Adam thought, a mischievous grin spreading across his face. He knew the drill: Winslow Schott Sr., the Toyman, was back, and he was bringing a whole new level of absurd villainy to the party.
Adam decided his first stop was CatCo. He teleported directly into the bustling newsroom, materializing right behind a startled intern who dropped a stack of papers.
"Oops, my bad," Adam said, casually. "Just looking for the coffee. You guys got, like, a secret stash of the good stuff? Or is it all just… existential dread in a cup?"
Cat Grant, from her impossibly chic office, looked up, her hawk-like gaze sweeping over him. "And who, pray tell, are you, and why are you causing a disturbance in my newsroom?"
Adam bowed dramatically. "Adam Stiels, at your service. Just a humble connoisseur of chaos and a purveyor of fine, unsolicited advice. And I believe that intern was just about to offer me a tour." He winked at the intern, who, still flustered, just nodded weakly.
"Cat Grant, officially confused. Achievement unlocked, probably," Adam thought, following the bewildered intern.
He soon found Kara, looking stressed but determined. She was trying to track Toyman, her brow furrowed in concentration.
"Hey, Kara!" Adam said, teleporting directly into her office chair, making her jump. "Rough day? Need a hug? Or maybe a witty retort that will instantly solve all your problems?"
Kara sighed, rubbing her temples. "Adam, how do you keep doing that? And yes, rough day. Toyman. Again. It's like he has a subscription to 'Villainy Monthly'."
"Tell me about it," Adam commiserated. "It's always the ones with the most absurd gimmicks, isn't it? Like, you'd think after the whole 'giant robot' phase, they'd move on to something more… subtle. But no, it's always the giant toys. Speaking of which, have you seen 'Toy Story 4'? Because that movie had some serious emotional depth for a film about talking plastic."
Kara actually chuckled, a genuine, tired laugh. "You know, for a guy who just appeared out of nowhere, you have an alarming amount of pop culture knowledge. It's… oddly comforting."
"It's my superpower," Adam declared proudly. "That, and the whole 'teleporting and making things explode with my mind' thing. Minor details."
Later, as Toyman unleashed his latest creation – a giant, menacing teddy bear – Adam knew it was time to intervene. Kara was struggling, trying to find an opening.
"Okay, Toyman, time for a distraction," Adam thought. He focused, picturing the most absurd toy he could imagine.
[SYSTEM: Illusion deployed. Target: Toyman. Effect: Extreme Distraction. Outcome: Positive.]
Suddenly, a giant, glowing, rainbow-colored unicorn, complete with a tiny, sarcastic crown, materialized directly in front of Toyman, doing a full-blown ballet routine. It even had tiny, ethereal glitter falling from its horn.
Toyman, mid-monologue, stopped dead. His eyes, usually gleaming with maniacal glee, widened in utter bewilderment. "What in the…?! A… a unicorn?! But… but it's not in my inventory! It's not part of the plan!"
The unicorn then let out a loud, melodious neigh that sounded suspiciously like a kazoo.
Kara, momentarily distracted by the sheer absurdity, used the opening to deliver a powerful punch, sending Toyman flying.
"You're welcome, Supergirl," Adam thought, dispelling the unicorn. "Sometimes, the best offense is a good dose of whimsical nonsense."
[SYSTEM: Achievement Progress: Witness Hero in Action (Supergirl). Current: 100%. Reward: New Ability - Mind Control ("Hypnotism").]
[SYSTEM: New Ability Acquired: Mind Control ("Hypnotism"). Energy Cost: High. Limitation: Overrides weak minds.]
Adam grinned. "Boom! Mind Control! This is going to be so much fun. My pranks just got a whole lot more… persuasive."
He watched as Kara apprehended Toyman, her brow still furrowed in confusion about the unicorn. Winn Schott, meanwhile, was frantically checking his sensors, muttering about inexplicable energy signatures and "glitches in the matrix."
"Don't worry, Winn," Adam thought, teleporting away. "You'll figure it out. Eventually. Or you'll just keep blaming the aliens. Either way, it's a win for me."
