Chapter 38 - CHAPTER-36: The Tense

"Not in this lifetime, Omega."

The words landed like a blade between them — sharp, deliberate.

Ayan's jaw tightened, but his eyes didn't waver. "Careful, Kairo. You're starting to sound obsessed."

Kairo stepped forward, slow enough to be deliberate. "And you're starting to sound like you want me to be."

A flicker — that was all. But Kairo caught it, the way Ayan's fingers curled slightly at his side, the almost imperceptible hitch in his breath.

The corridor outside the principal's office was empty, the air still heavy from the meeting, their unspoken clash filling the silence.

Ayan leaned in just enough for his words to brush Kairo's ear. "You think calling me 'Omega' makes you dangerous?"

Kairo's lips curved in something that wasn't quite a smile. "No. I think it makes you honest."

For a second, neither moved. The tension thickened until it was almost unbearable — a standoff neither was ready to break.

Finally, Ayan stepped back, his smirk cool but his eyes still sparking. "You're playing with fire."

Kairo tilted his head, gaze locked. "Good. I don't burn easy."

And with that, they turned away in opposite directions — but neither really left.

Not in their heads. Not in the pull that refused to fade.
