By the time the announcement came over the intercom — "Kairo Hale and Ayan Veyra, report to the principal's office" — the entire corridor had gone silent.
Dozens of eyes turned, hungry for drama.
Ayan ignored them. Kairo didn't even blink.
They walked side by side, not speaking, the click of Ayan's shoes and the lazy pace of Kairo's stride the only sounds between them. The air was thick with all the morning's whispers, following them down the hall like a trail of smoke.
Inside the principal's office, the atmosphere shifted from gossip to interrogation.
Principal Rowan sat behind his desk, hands folded, expression unreadable.
"Do either of you have an explanation for the… situation on campus?" His gaze flicked from Ayan to Kairo, lingering like he was trying to read something neither of them wanted to reveal.
Ayan crossed his arms. "If by 'situation' you mean other people's obsession with my personal life, then no. I don't."
Kairo leaned back in the chair, long legs stretching out, radiating the kind of calm that was more threat than peace. "Rumors spread because people are bored. Not our problem."
Principal Rowan's eyes narrowed. "Not your problem until it affects the school's image. I'm telling you both — keep your interactions… professional."
Ayan bit back a laugh, sharp and humorless. "We're classmates, not employees."
Kairo didn't take his eyes off the principal. "Message received," he said, but the undertone in his voice made it sound more like a challenge than compliance.
When they left the office, the hallway was still dotted with curious stares.
Ayan walked ahead, not wanting to give them the satisfaction of seeing him flustered. But he could feel Kairo behind him — steady, unhurried — like a shadow he couldn't shake.
"Professional," Ayan muttered under his breath.
Kairo's reply was low enough for only him to hear.
"Not in this lifetime, omega."
