Chapter 40 - CHAPTER -38: Close Quarters

The student council room was empty when they walked in — spacious, bright, and painfully quiet.

Only one table sat in the middle, stacked with the project folders.

"One table?" Ayan muttered, stepping inside. "Figures."

Kairo shut the door behind them with a click that sounded far too intentional. "What? Scared to sit close to me?"

Ayan slid into the chair opposite him, pretending not to notice how Kairo pulled his seat closer. Too close.

They opened the folder — the task was clear: plan, design, and present together. No splitting work, no avoiding contact.

Ayan reached for the first document, but Kairo's hand landed on it at the same time.

The air between them shifted — not hostile exactly, but something sharper.

"You think you can just take charge?" Kairo asked, his voice low.

"I think," Ayan said evenly, meeting his gaze, "you're better off following my lead."

Kairo's lips curled in a slow, deliberate smirk. "Not in this lifetime, Omega."

They spent the next hour working in tense silence — except it wasn't silence. Every pen tap, every brush of paper, every glance felt loaded.

When Ayan leaned over to jot something on the blueprint, Kairo didn't move his arm out of the way, forcing their sleeves to graze.

It was suffocating, infuriating… and oddly thrilling.

When the bell rang, neither moved immediately.

"See you tomorrow, partner," Kairo said, his tone dipped in challenge.

Ayan just smiled, calm and dangerous. "Oh, you will."
