The door to the council room clicked shut behind them. For a moment, the hallway was empty, the silence heavy. But silence never lasted long in this school.
A pair of juniors, passing by with notebooks clutched to their chests, slowed when they caught sight of them — Kairo leaning just a little too close, Ayan meeting his gaze without a flicker of fear.
"Did you see that?" one whispered, their voice carrying more than they intended.
Another student's eyes widened. "The Alpha and… Ayan?"
The words were nothing more than sparks, but sparks were all it took. By the time Ayan walked down the corridor, calm and composed, whispers had already begun to coil like smoke around him.
> Too close.
Did they fight again?
Or was it something else…?
Kairo caught up easily, his footsteps loud and steady against the tile floor. He didn't bother quieting them; he wanted everyone to hear.
"Enjoying the attention, Omega?" he asked, voice pitched just for Ayan.
Ayan didn't turn, only let the faintest smile tug at his mouth. "You're the one who couldn't keep your distance."
That should have been the end of it. Just another sharp exchange, another invisible clash in their ongoing war. But it wasn't.
By the next morning, the whispers had twisted.
Now it wasn't just "they were close."
It was: "The Alpha and the Omega were alone. Working together. Sitting too close. Arguing like— no, not arguing, more like—"
Each retelling grew bolder, spicier, more dangerous.
By lunch, it wasn't whispers anymore. It was laughter in corners, hushed gasps, eyes following them wherever they went. The rumor had already morphed into something entirely different.
Something neither of them could ignore.
