CASSANDRA WILLOWSTONE
"Marie Banton performed a veritas spell on the letter." I blew out a breath. "Truth turns the object green. A lie turns it red."
"So a veritas spell is like a lie detector test."
"Except it's accurate all the time," I said. "Unlike polygraphs." I nodded at the paper he still held. "It turned red."
His brows rose in surprise. "So... it's a fake?"
"Carol Jones confirmed it was her husband's handwriting. But the veritas spell is never wrong. Someone wrote this letter to my mother and it wasn't Doug. I think whoever it was wanted to get Mom out to the sacred grove to kill her. The rumor was that Doug had broken up with Mom and she'd reacted badly. I hate to say it, but that sounds a lot like my mother. She was the one who chose to walk away. She wouldn't accept rejection from Doug. Well, from anyone, really."
Rane re-folded the letter and placed it on his desk. "You don't know if Doug really broke up with her."
