Chapter 1 - Prologue

All my life, I've loved studying animals ancient or present.

When I was a kid, I spent hours watching shows like Wild Kratts and every nature documentary I could find. While other kids were outside playing sports, I was looking at nature and playing with all the different animals on our farm.

Animals fascinated me, leading me to dive into the study of them. Every species has its own way of surviving in the world.

Not just the ones we knew about, but the ones we lost. As I got older, I started to delve into the study of extinction.

Species disappearing forever because of climate changes, disasters, or sometimes because of humans. Entire species that once walked the earth were now nothing more than bones in museums and pictures in textbooks.

That never sat right with me. I wondered how amazing it would be to recreate something like Jurassic park. Being able to see these wonderful creatures full of mysteries wonder the earth once again.

I asked myself if it was possible to bring the past back to life?

That question followed me through school. I studied harder than I ever had before. Biology became my favorite subject, then genetics, and eventually I found myself specializing in animal genetics.

That question never stopped appearing in my head. My peers told me it was impossible that I would destroy my career going down this path. While most scientists focused on understanding living species, I was more interested in how life worked at its most basic level.

A. T. C. G.

These four letters built every living creature on the planet. These letters serve as the foundational code for all living organisms, allowing genetic information to be stored, replicated, and transmitted.

I wondered if those same letters might hold something else too.

Possibility.

The possibility that life could be changed… improved… or maybe even brought back.

Years passed while I buried myself in research, experiments, and endless data. The lab eventually became more familiar to me than my own apartment.

Most people would probably call that unhealthy say that I'm leading myself to an early grave. But discovery doesn't happen while sleeping at home.

It happens late at night when the world is quiet and the only sounds are the soft hum of machines and the tapping of keys on a keyboard.

My research wasn't exactly popular in the scientific community. Some called it irresponsible. Others called it impossible. A few even called it dangerous.

But to me, it was simply the next step in understanding life. No matter how bad it may get down the line I was committed.

If DNA truly was the blueprint for every living creature, then somewhere inside those four letters had to be the instructions for species we had lost. The past wasn't completely gone.

It was just… fragmented. Buried in fossils. Preserved in ice. Hidden in damaged strands of DNA waiting to be understood.

My goal wasn't to play god.

I just wanted to see if extinction really had to be permanent. If that question I asked myself so long ago was possible.

I was alone in the lab again, staring at a monitor filled with genetic sequences scrolling across the screen. a small sample sat inside the containment chamber beside my workstation. Months of reconstruction, sequencing, and simulation had led to this single test.

My heart pounded in my chest as the system processed the final sequence.

If the model was correct, this would be the closest humanity had ever come to reconstructing a fully stable ancient genome.

The machine hummed quietly as it worked. For a moment, everything was perfectly still. Then suddenly just as fast the alarms started.

At first I thought it was just a small system error. That assumption lasted about two seconds. Warning lights began flashing across the lab, and the monitor filled with alerts faster than I could read them.

"Power surge detected."

"Containment instability."

"What?" I muttered, quickly moving toward the control panel.

And that was the moment I realized something was very, very wrong.

Panic began to set in " shit this isn't supposed to be happening everything was stable" boy how wrong I was.

Sparks began to fly from the control panel, scattering across the floor. I stumbled back instinctively, raising an arm to shield my face from the smoke and the smell of burning wires in the air.

"This isn't possible…" I said, my voice sounding drowned in the blaring of the alarms throughout the lab.

I rushed back to the console, frantically trying to force a shutdown.

"Come on… come on…"

The screen refused to respond.

Lines of genetic code flickered wildly before the entire monitor glitched into static.

Another loud crack echoed through the room as a cable above me burst, sending a shower of sparks raining down. One of the overhead lights exploded with a pop, plunging half the lab into darkness.

My heart was pounding so hard it felt like it might burst out of my chest.

I reached for the emergency power cutoff on the side of the main reactor unit. If I could just kill the power, maybe the system would stabilize.

Just as my hand wrapped around the lever, the containment chamber behind me emitted a piercing screech.

I turned just in time to see the glass begin to fracture.

Thin spiderweb cracks spread across the surface as energy surged through the machinery connected to it.

"Oh no…"

Before I could react, the entire system overloaded.

A blinding flash of white light erupted from the chamber, swallowing the room in an instant. The shockwave threw me backward, slamming me against the metal floor.

Pain shot through my body as electricity surged through the equipment around me.

My vision blurred and my hearing became muffled.

The alarms faded into a distant ringing.

As the darkness slowly closed in, one strange thought crossed my mind.

After all those years studying life…

I never expected my story to end like this.

Then everything went black.
