The morning Evans turned fifteen, he woke before sunrise.
For years, he had imagined this day.
Everyone in Aurelia awakened their powers at the age of fifteen. Some received their abilities naturally, while others discovered astonishing talents that changed their entire lives.
Evans stood before the mirror and stared at himself.
"Today," he whispered.
Today, he would finally discover what made him special.
A knock came from his bedroom door.
"Evans!"
He immediately recognized the voice.
"Olivia?"
"Who else would it be?" she replied. "Hurry up! We're going to be late."
Evans smiled.
Olivia had been his best friend for almost as long as he could remember. She was usually cheerful, but today even she sounded nervous.
Evans grabbed his jacket and rushed downstairs.
Outside, the streets were filled with teenagers heading toward the Awakening Hall.
Some were excited.
Others were terrified.
Olivia walked beside Evans, occasionally glancing at him.
"Are you nervous?" she asked.
"A little."
"A little?"
Evans laughed. "Fine. I'm terrified."
Olivia smiled.
"Whatever power you get, I'll still be your friend."
Evans looked at her.
"Promise?"
"Promise."
Neither of them knew how important those words would become.
