Chapter 3 - Fading Light

Taking a deep breath, I steeled myself, ready to finally make my move. This time, I was determined, no second thoughts. But as life often does, it threw a curveball. Right when I was about to lean in, my instincts kicked in, warning me of something hurtling towards Mayu. In an instant, a surge of strength coursed through me, and my senses sharpened. With these newfound abilities, I felt confident in my ability to protect her.

Without hesitation, I swiftly turned her aside, shielding her from the impending danger. At that moment, my eyes caught four knives narrowly missing us. I had managed to save her from harm, yet there was one thing I couldn't prevent. The last thing I recall was everything turning red...

Mayu: Hey wake up!

What's that sound? It's as if someone is calling out to me, but from where? I strain to see, but my vision is blurred, making it impossible to locate the source.

I stood solitary in an expansive, deserted landscape. The sight before me was truly breathtaking. Majestic mountains towered in the distance, delicate cherry blossoms graced the surroundings, and a glistening river gently lapped at my feet. At that moment, I couldn't help but ponder – perhaps it would be wise to linger here. I could relish the beauty of these landscapes, an ever-present charm that would grace my days and nights.

This was all a part of my imagination.

Kaori: Quick call the ambulance. We need to take him to a hospital ASAP.

Mayu: Okay!

(From Mayu's perspective, a few minutes ago)

Yuki: Well Mayu, I am gonna see you tomorrow then.

Hold on a moment, I haven't had my fill of his company just yet. I yearn for a bit more time together. I need to think of a valid excuse, and fast.

Mayu: Wait can we take a little walk before you go?♡

Nice job Mayu, that's a good idea.

Yuki: So how are studi.....

It was all smooth and just right. Having him around after all these months felt incredibly comforting.

Yuki: Congrats! Just don't become too famous or other guys might fall for you...♡

Mayu: I already have a straight answer for them.♡

I closed my eyes, relishing the feeling of having him all to myself at this perfect moment. There was nothing else, just him, me, and the wonderful mood. But...

Yuki: What a time to waste the mood.

Why did it have to happen at that exact moment? We were so close, just inches apart. Alright, Mayu, take a deep breath and stay composed. You still have a chance.

Mayu: We can still do it...♡

At last, the moment has arrived. It's all falling into place perfectly. Yet, as fate would have it, life had different intentions...

Mayu: Yuki!?

Wait? No, this can't be happening. Anything but this, I can't comprehend it. What just occurred? In an instant, he turned away from me, and then suddenly, he was on the ground. Blood was gushing from his back, and there were three knives embedded in him.

Mayu:No,This cant be.Why? How..

I was absolutely terrified at that moment. My hands trembled uncontrollably. I lost my grip and stumbled to the ground. Overwhelmed by fear, I knelt by his side, frantically caressing him.

Kaori: Mayu!!

In the midst of the chaos, a strange voice called my name, but I was too engrossed in everything that was happening to notice.

Kaori: Stop wasting time Mayu, Hurry call an ambulance! We need to take him to the hospital now.

Yea, an ambulance can help us in a situation like this.

Kaori: Snap out of it and hurry or we might lose him.

As Kaori's words reached my ears, I snapped back to the present moment. Acting swiftly, I wasted no time and dialled the ambulance. However, Kaori promptly took the phone from my hand and urgently requested them to expedite their arrival at the location.

Several minutes elapsed... Soon, the wailing sirens of the ambulance filled the air as it pulled up at the scene. Shortly thereafter, a group of uniformed police officers arrived to inspect the situation. With swift coordination, Yuki was carefully placed into the ambulance and swiftly transported to Isokaze General Hospital.

From a distant place... Over a phone call...

Unknown: Boss, I believe our plan has been successful, but I'm uncertain if it will be sufficient to eliminate him.

Boss: You should step away from the area for now. We can come back to check on him later. It's safer not to stay there at the moment.

Unknown: Yes Boss.

I swiftly employed my AeroGlide to make a hasty exit from the scene.

Back to Kaori...

Kaori: He'll be okay. Our first step should be to notify his uncle about this situation. Right now, Mayu, let's head to my dorm. I don't believe your apartment would be a safe option.

Mayu:(In a hushed and traumatised tone) But that was...

Kaori: Staying out here is too risky. Our best move for now is to evacuate. We can gather more information later on.

I quickly seized Mayu's arm and guided her into my dorm room. She was clearly traumatized by the recent events. It was fortunate that I had been on my way to the convenience store and stumbled upon the scene. I never could have imagined something like this happening. I used to believe Isokaze was a secure city, but after today's incidents, my certainty wavered.

Upon our arrival at my dorm, I advised Mayu to take a moment to rest. Retrieving my phone, I dialled his uncle's number to relay the unsettling events of the day. His response was a mix of shock and deep concern, particularly upon learning that his niece was now in the hospital. He inquired about the specific details – his location and the hospital he was admitted to – and I provided him with all the information within my knowledge.

I really hope his sister is unaware of this situation. When she finds out about this, it's going to make things even tougher for her. As I was thinking about all this, I suddenly realized something. There was someone on the top of the building near the bus stop. It was dark, though, so I couldn't be sure if it was a person. We shouldn't jump to conclusions about them being involved. And even if they were, I don't understand how they managed to throw those knives so accurately. It's just a guess, but I've decided to investigate on my own and not tell Mayu. I don't want her to get caught up in this. I'm sorry, Mayu, but I think it's better if you don't know too much about what's going on. I'll handle it by myself.

A few moments drifted by, and when I glanced at the clock, it read 11 pm. Exhaustion was beginning to set in, given the intense workout at the gym and the recent incidents. It seemed like a wise choice to get some rest if I wanted to be prepared for the challenges of the upcoming day.

The next day...

Mayu: I am feeling better. I think I will be fine now.

Kaori: Alright, I'll cut the jokes. But seriously, let's not let these distractions get in the way of our classes. I mean, your class is at 9:15, right? Time's ticking, so we should definitely pick up the pace and make it on time!

Mayu: Actually, Kaori, my schedule has changed a bit. I'll have an extra class coming up this Sunday, which led to the cancellation of that class. Now, my first class is set to start at 11:00. So...

Kaori: Okay then let me drop you off somewhere safe.

Mayu: Kaori, I can handle myself now.

I've got a gut feeling that Mayu isn't being truthful. Something's off, and I'm not comfortable leaving her alone. Hold on, I might have a solution. I quickly dialled Yuuna, who's a great option since she doesn't have class until 11:30. I can leave Mayu with her and pick her up later. The only thing is, I need a good excuse. Maybe it's best to just tell her the truth. Yeah, doesn't seem like I have much of a choice here.

Yuuna: Hello Kaori!

Kaori: Hey Yuuna, do you have a moment to talk? It's pretty urgent. Can we meet up at the gate?

Yuuna: But what's the matter?

Kaori: I'll explain everything once we're there. Catch you later, bye!

Yuuna: Ok, Bye!

Why would Kaori call me now, especially with urgency? I hope everything's okay and nothing's wrong. I better hurry and find out!

At Kaori's Apartment..

Kaori: C'mon Mayu, We can't be late.

Mayu: Just one sec!

On the way...

We reached Mayu's apartment, and I asked her to quickly change into her uniform and gather her things for the academy. In just a few minutes, she was all set and ready. We then headed towards the gate, where I was planning to meet up with Yuuna. I hope that she makes it on time.

At the gate, I spotted Yuuna waving. After we met up, I recounted all the events from yesterday. As I suspected, she seemed a bit anxious too. I asked her to keep an eye on Mayu and then headed off to my classes.

At hospital..

Tears streamed down my face as I sobbed uncontrollably at the recent happenings. My thoughts were in chaos, unable to comprehend how this could have occurred without my awareness. But now isn't the moment to linger in despair. I must return, to seek justice for my niece.

Did you think I was just a side character? It's understandable, considering I didn't get much screen time before. But now, this is my moment to shine and prove what I'm capable of.

I rushed home to get ready and also to check on Nikki in the meantime.

At home...

I was relieved that Nikki was safe, but I couldn't afford to be complacent. I needed to be cautious around her and avoid involving her in this situation. With that in mind, I headed downstairs. I glanced around one last time to make sure no one was watching. Satisfied that the coast was clear, I pressed the small lever under my working table—a barely noticeable switch to the average eye.

A secret door swung open before me, and I stepped inside...

It was dark. I quickly searched for the lights and turned them on.

Kaito: It's been a long time since I came here. Good job, Aetheria

Atheria: It's a pleasure seeing you again, Master.

Kaito: Okay I don't have much time left, Let's see what I can do.....

After that, I spent several hours working on creating something.

3 Days Passed..

At the hospital...

As drowsiness crept over me, I began to lose track of time. This place that I've grown to like now feels solitary, and a sense of isolation sets in. I'm alone here, with no one else around. While I did enjoy this solitude for a time, it's starting to weigh on me. Maybe it's time to return to where I came from, but the problem is I can't quite recall where that is or how I ended up here.

Suddenly, a flashback surged in front of my eyes. It contained memories of my arrival in Isokaze with Nikki. I remembered my fumbling the first day, but also how I formed friendships in which one of them evolved into something more. Tears welled up as I gazed at Mayu. She seemed to be the centre of my focus, everything else fading into obscurity. She took my hand, and together, we soared higher and higher into the sky...

Nurse: Doctor. Please come to check on patient no. 05, He has opened his eyes.

Slowly, I woke up to find myself in a bed, but the location was a mystery. My surroundings were hazy at first, and then clHitomity gradually returned. Needles were inserted into my body, a device that monitored my heartbeat, and an assortment of medicines lay nearby. People in green attire were gathered around me, their efforts focused on rousing me from my slumber. But why was this happening?

Moments ticked by, and my senses improved further. Now I could speak, and my hesitating was clearer. My gaze landed on a girl who had her face buried against the side of my bed. Tears streamed down her face as she sobbed uncontrollably.

Yuki: Why are you crying??

Mayu: Huh? Is that you Yuki?

As I heard my name, an unfamiliar yet potent energy started to surge within me. The voice was recognizable—it belonged to someone I knew. And before I could fully comprehend it, that person was in my embrace, tears welling up in her eyes.

Mayu: I thought I lost you. ( >﹏<.)

Yuki: See, I'm completely okay. Just as I said before, nothing can come between us to tear us apart...

Despite her tears, her grip on me remained strong. Memories came flooding back, reminding me of the situation I was in. How did I survive after being hit by three knives? But that wasn't all – I couldn't figure out how I managed to save Mayu. It was like I acted on instinct, protecting her without knowing there was any danger.

Gradually I was dispatched from the hospital after the doctor checked my wounds. They were shocked because the injuries had completely healed in just three days, without leaving a mark. It was a big mystery.

At home...

Yuki: I'm back!

Nikki was busy cooking in the kitchen. When she saw me, she dropped everything and wrapped her arms around me, crying all the while. It seemed like my disappearance had really worried her. I glanced around for Kaito, but he was nowhere in sight – probably due to work.

We all settled on the sofa, but Mayu wouldn't let me go. Nikki, on the other hand, bombarded me with questions about all sorts of things including my reason for absence. I noticed that she didn't know I had been in the hospital, So I let her stay this way by avoiding those questions. I signalled Mayu not to reveal anything. Keeping this secret from Nikki seemed like the best course of action.

After Dinner...

Mayu: I am not leaving you alone today. Please, Yuki.

Yuki: I understand, Mayu. I can tell you've been really concerned about me. I apologize for all the reckless things I've done. And hey, feel free to do whatever makes you comfortable. Just a heads up, my bed might be a bit cramped. Are you sure you're okay with that?

Mayu: That won't be a problem for me. Will you be fine with that?

Yuki: If you are fine with it there will be no problem.

Together, we settled into the bed. Mayu embraced me tightly, holding on for quite a while. We discussed the events of the day and she filled me in on what happened during my absence. After a while, I noticed something beautiful: her face was close to mine. It had been a long time since I'd seen her sleeping face. I couldn't help but wonder what would have happened if I hadn't taken Mayu's hand back then. Would I have remained stuck there forever? The thought was frightening, but all worries vanished as I looked at her peaceful expression.

I fought against my inner desires, but the temptation grew stronger. A kiss wouldn't hurt, right? I aimed for her forehead, but to my surprise, I felt her lips against mine. They were soft and delicate, reminiscent of strawberries, and the sensation was wonderful. This feeling was something I would never forget. However, there was one thing...

Yuki: Hey I thought you were asleep.

Mayu: It was purely instinctive; I never expected you to be that daring. (。•̀‿ -。)

Yuki: Ok stop embarrassing me and go to sleep. (,,>﹏<,,)

Mayu: Sometimes revenge is the perfect response to all those playful teases.

A soft chuckle escaped her lips before she closed her eyes. I was left wondering if she was encouraging a repeat of our earlier kiss or if slumber had claimed her. The uncertainty was short-lived, as I soon felt a gentle pressure against my lips. Her warmth and tenderness enveloped me once again in a soft, fleeting kiss. And then, like a whisper of magic, came the words I had been longing to hear...

Mayu: I love you!

As she dozed off, my face turned as red as a tomato. But at the same time, it felt like I was floating in a dream. I know life will throw all sorts of things my way, but having her beside me makes me feel like I can handle anything. Tomorrow's a new day, and I'm thinking of meeting up with my friends. They're probably worried about me. Oh, and I've still got some questions for Kaori. After all that, I drifted into a peaceful sleep.

Next day...

I stirred from my slumber, sensing a gentle disturbance. Something was attempting to rouse me, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it...

Nikki: I know it's your day off, but come on, wake up! I've got something cool to share with you.

Yuki: Just 5 more minutes

Nikki: C'mon Yuki.

And just like that, she whisked away the blanket. As she looked beside me, there was Mayu, her gaze akin to daggers aimed right at me.

Yuki: It isn't what it looks like!

Nikki: Mind explaining that then?

I turned my gaze towards Mayu and was taken aback. Hold on a second, something was off. Her outfit today was completely different from yesterday's, and it was way more revealing.

Yuki: How did she even do that while asleep?

Nikki: (Sighs) Sure enough with your excuses. Once you're done with your lovey-dovey stuff, come downstairs. And be fast about it!

And just like that, she hurried downstairs. I'm still trying to figure out how Mayu managed to pull that off. Well, I shouldn't make things worse. I was just about to get up when suddenly, my hand was pulled from behind.

Yuki: You are awake?

Mayu: (giggling) Yea it's been a while that way.

Yuki: You will seriously get me in trouble one day.

Mayu: Alright, alright, I'll get going. My revenge is completed anyway. See you later!

Before leaving the room, she planted a peck on my cheek. Well, leaving that aside, I still have some tasks on my list. I sent a text to Kaori, Shou, Yuuna, and Valerie, asking them to gather at the hangar.

After getting ready for the day, I headed downstairs for breakfast. Nikki rushed over to me, holding out a note. It turned out to be from Uncle.

The note read, "Kiddo, by the time you wake up, I'll be at work. But I left something for you in the garage. Head downstairs and find the lever beneath the table where I usually work. There's more to discuss, but for now, take what's there and keep it safe. I've already analyzed your DNA and discovered a peculiar RNA mixed in. It seems like you possess some sort of unknown power, although I'm uncertain about its nature. For additional details, go downstairs to the mentioned room. You'll find a hand scanner that'll collect your data. If all goes as planned, you'll learn about your newfound ability and how to use it. And, as I mentioned before, there's an item wrapped in blue fabric. I'll catch you when I'm back. Goodbye!"

Uncle's note had left me with a lot to ponder. Reflecting on it, I realized there might be some truth to having a supernatural power, though I couldn't recall where it came from. Could that mysterious chemical incident be the cause? Either way, answers awaited me. It was time to head downstairs and delve into the mysteries he had left for me to uncover.

I made my way to the dining table and enjoyed the sandwiches Nikki had prepared.

Yuki: Did you open the note earlier?

Nikki: Uncle told me to give it straight to you. He also said not to open it.

I gently patted Nikki's head, appreciating her for following her uncle's instructions. It seemed that Nikki wasn't involved in this matter after all. After finishing breakfast, I bid Nikki goodbye and headed downstairs to the garage. Since she had classes on Saturday, I went downstairs.

Once in the garage, I located the table Uncle had mentioned and started searching for the hidden lever underneath. After a bit of searching, I spotted a small lever right at the centre of the table. It was so inconspicuous, I wondered how I had never noticed it before. I pressed it, and to my surprise, a gate opened before me and I stepped inside it.

Yuki: Where could the lights be?

The room was shrouded in darkness, making it a challenge to find the light switch. I stumbled into objects along the way, but eventually located it tucked away in a corner. After the room was illuminated, I took a moment to survey my surroundings. A note caught my attention, detailing instructions on how to use the hand scanner.

As I placed my hand on the device, a soft green light appeared, indicating that it was scanning my palm. Soon, a large screen lit up with an array of text. The screen revealed details about my DNA, outlining some fascinating insights. What caught my eye was an in-depth explanation of my newfound power and how to wield it effectively.

Curiosity piqued, I untangled what was hidden within the green cloak. Underneath, I discovered a small device shaped like five fingers. Remembering the screen's instructions, I removed my shirt and turned around. Something inside me surged, pulling the device toward my back. It adhered to my skin, causing a twinge of discomfort that I managed to swallow back. After a bit, the device was completely settled under my skin. I managed to stifle any yelps that might attract Mayu's attention. Moments later I checked my reflection in the mirror – there it was, plainly visible. I needed to figure out how to hide it until I could enquire more about it with my Uncle. I hastily put my shirt back on and glanced around to ensure everything was clear. Satisfied, I was ready to exit the room.

Before I left the room, I cast one more look at the screen, absorbing all the information about the device that was now embedded in my back. What I saw next was truly astonishing.....

Bonus:-

Nervous excitement coursed through me as I spread the blanket under the oak tree, arranging the sandwiches, fruits, and the bottle of sparkling juice. Today was the day I'd planned a surprise picnic for Hitomi, and I hoped she would love it as much as I did.

I saw Hitomi approaching, the sunlight catching the strands of her hair and making her smile even more radiant. The way her eyes sparkled made my heart skip a beat.

Shou: Hey there.

She arched an eyebrow playfully.

Hitomi: What's all this?

I patted the spot next to me on the blanket.

Shou: Why don't you sit down and find out?

As Hitomi settled down, I couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and anxiety. This was a risk, but one I was more than willing to take.

Opening the basket, I revealed the spread I'd prepared.

Hitomi: A picnic? (she asked, curiosity dancing in her eyes.)

Shou: Not just any picnic. (I chuckled softly.)

We enjoyed the food, sharing stories and memories. With every laugh and smile, I felt a warmth growing between us, something that went beyond friendship.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a warm glow, I found myself stealing glances at Hitomi. She was so captivating, and my heart swelled with emotion.

Hitomi: You know, you're pretty amazing.

Her words flowed with a soft and genuine tone.

Heat rushed to my cheeks, and I scratched the back of my head.

Shou: Well, I thought this was a good way to remind you of that.

Hitomi's laughter was like music to my ears.

Hitomi: I don't need picnics to know that.

The gentle breeze played with her hair, and for a moment, the world seemed to fade away, leaving just the two of us.

I cleared my throat, my heart pounding as I reached into the basket for the bouquet of wildflowers.

Shou: There's one more thing.

Her eyes lit up when she saw the flowers.

Hitomi: You remembered.

I shrugged, trying to act casual.

Shou: Of course. How could I forget?

As the stars began to twinkle above, I extended my hand toward Hitomi, a mixture of hope and nerves swirling within me.

Shou: May I have this dance?

Seeing her blush and the smile that tugged at her lips, I knew I'd made the right choice. We swayed to a rhythm only we could hear, and as the night enveloped us, I felt a connection growing stronger, a bond that was beyond words.

And at that moment, as we danced beneath the moonlight, I realized that sometimes, taking risks and stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to the most beautiful and unexpected moments of all...
