Chapter 4 - Shadowed Back Gift

Before I left the room, I cast one more look at the screen, absorbing all the information about the device that was now embedded in my back. What I saw next was truly astonishing.

Yuki: Hmm. According to what the screen says I can glide with this thing. Also, there is a feature called 'Grappling hooks'. But sadly I can't use it. What a waste! So what should I do with this thing?

I quickly put my t-shirt back on and straightened up. My mind buzzed with thoughts of the Steelbyte device – its potential, its possibilities. But I couldn't let anyone else know about this, not yet. Not until I fully understood what it was and what it could do. Once again, using it seemed risky, likely to attract trouble. And, as I'd mentioned earlier, I didn't want to involve Mayu. So, I turned off the room and left.

Heading upstairs, I couldn't help but wonder why Mayu was taking so much time. Then, out of nowhere, I felt a tender hug from behind. I spun around and there was this amazing person with violet hair that shone brightly. Her eyes were like super sparkly diamonds, truly something else.

Mayu: Hey there, umm... what are you daydreaming about?

Yuki: Oh, just some thoughts about the day. You know, the usual.

Mayu's cheeks turned a faint shade of pink as she leaned in, her voice a gentle murmur in my ear

Mayu: You're a terrible liar, Yuki.

I couldn't help but chuckle at her perceptiveness; she always managed to see right through me.

Yuki: Alright, fine. I was just... caught up in a daydream.

Mayu: A daydream? We're at your house, you know.

Yuki: Well, the 'view' from my house is pretty amazing, don't you think?

A soft, embarrassed giggle escaped Mayu's lips, and in that sweet moment, a warm rush of gratitude swept over me for having Mayu by my side. Her knack for infusing even the most ordinary moments with a touch of charm and her endearing shyness made her presence all the more treasured.

As we headed to get ready, thoughts of the morning's misunderstanding with Nikki replayed in my mind.

Yuki: Didn't you get a little overboard today morning? you literally made Nikki mad. And second thought how were your clothes different from last night?

Her cheeks flushed red but also her look appears to say something different. Is she thinking of something to make me blush again? Not today Mayu, I never fell for the same mistake again. Since last night I became more aware of it. And even if she did say that I have perfect words set up already for that. I just hope it doesn't escalate much further than I anticipated.

Mayu: Wasnt it you who did that? ♡

Oh, so you are playing that card. Well then here it goes...

Yuki: Hmm I don't pretty well remember last night. Mind showing it in actions?

This time her face was red. Oh, maybe it was a bit much.

Mayu: I don't mind. (,,>﹏<,,)

Wait is this that route? We are taking things that far? Today? Wait a sec I am not prepared for it.

My face was red at that time. Mayu burst into laughter.

Mayu: There I did it again.

I gave her a blank stare.

Mayu: What? I was just taking my revenge.

God this girl. Why was she taking my hopes high for just a prank?

Yuki: Nevermind let's leave for the hanger. Our team is waiting for us.

Mayu: (Why does his face look like he is disappointed with me? Wait is it related to what I did now. Oh gosh! How can I fix it now.)

Yuki: Hey Mayu?

Mayu: Yes!!

Yuki: Are you daydreaming now? C'mon, let's leave.

We arrived at the hangar and went inside. Everyone in our team was waiting for us. Judging by their looks they are a bit surprised but what could be the reason? Furthermore, where is Yuuna? I m pretty sure I have sent her a message about this as well.

Valerie shot me a teasing grin.

Valerie: Sleeping over at Mayu's, huh? You sly dog.

Yuki: Valerie, don't even start.

Shou: Hey, Yuki! Are you feeling okay after that little accident earlier?

Yuki: Yea in perfect condition.

Kaori's demeanour was more serious.

Kaori: Yuki, are you sure you're good to go?

Yuki: I promise, Kaori, I'm perfectly fine.

Valerie: Ok guys we can talk about that later.

Kaori: Is this seem a joke to you Valerie?

Valerie: That's not what I mean. We shouldn't bombard him with questions like this. Just keep calm for now.

Kaori: Fine if you say so.

Yuki: One last thing before leaving, Kaori can you talk to me in person?

Valerie: That can wait. Yuki here take the core and try it in the arena. Tell me about the experience after the test match.

We all came to an understanding and all of us went inside our respective gear. Valerie observed from a distance, her gaze focused and calculating. The test match began, and I unleashed the full extent of the new core's capabilities. Overdrive mode allowed me to push my gear to the limits, the sword in my hand glinting with power and now I had a revolver for mid-range attacks. The enhancements made the experience exhilarating and seamless.

Valerie: Impressive, Yuki. Your control over the new core is remarkable.

I shifted into Overdrive 2.0, the dual katanas in my grip radiating energy. Then I switched to my fully automatic rifles. I showcased its firepower, taking down targets with precision and speed. But then came the moment when Kaori suggested Overdrive X.

Kaori: Yuki, activate Overdrive X!

The air seemed to shift as tension settled in. Shou's voice held anger and concern.

Shou: Kaori. We already talked about this. Overdrive X is too risky.

Mayu: Shou's right, Kaori. We don't want to push Yuki too far.

Kaori's voice wavered, but she didn't back down.

Kaori: It will be fine. For a short period, it won't hurt. Yuki, go on and activate it

I exchanged a glance with Mayu, understanding the concern in her eyes. She believed in me, but she also valued my safety.

Mayu: Yuki, you don't have to prove anything to anyone.

Despite the heated debate, we eventually reached a consensus. Kaori relented, and we emerged from our AI Gears. Valerie approached me, her curiosity evident.

Valerie: So, Yuki, how did the new core feel?

Yuki: Honestly, it's better than I expected. More power, more control. It's a significant upgrade.

Shou's voice interrupted the conversation with a burst of excitement.

Shou: Hey, guys! How about we celebrate with a party?

Kaori: I have plans after this. So imma leave.

Yuki: Hey wait!

Kaori: Ok be quick with that.

I took Kaori far away from others and asked her about the events that happened that night. Her face drops into a bit of sadness as she explained the whole scenario.

Now that I think about it, It's probably because of Kaori I am still alive.

Yuki: I don't know how can i thank you enough for that help. If you hadn't been there I probably would have...

Kaori: Keep it for yourself. But don't forget you owe me for that. When the time comes I will be sure to use it.

With that, she left and I rejoined the group. And as expected, Mayu had a strange aura which was probably because of me.

Yuki: Well, How about it will be us four this time?

We went to the cafe beside the academy. After all of us have settled we gave our orders. Shou got a call and left the cafe saying he has something to do. He cancelled the order and left leaving me with the two. Why did he leave me alone here because of Hitomi? Don't ask me how I know that. Now, I hope Valerie doesn't cause any problems. Our order arrived and we finished it before our chats could end.

Our conversation flowed effortlessly, touching on everything from our dreams to the challenges we faced. But then, a lighthearted incident occurred that sparked a hint of jealousy in Mayu.

A playful smile tugged at Valerie's lips as she handed me a napkin.

Valerie: You've got a little something on your cheek. Lemme wipe it for you.

Yuki: Thanks I can do it myself.

I wiped my cheek, only to have Valerie burst into laughter.

Valerie: Gotcha!

Mayu's gaze narrowed slightly, and I couldn't help but chuckle at her adorable pout.

Mayu: Is that how she flirts?

Yuki: Trust me, it's all in good fun.

Moments later Valerie bid us farewell and left. I took Mayu back to her apartment.

At her apartment

Yuki: Thanks for another wonderful day Mayu. Every day with you feels like heaven.

Mayu: No, It's all thanks to you for being a precious gem in my life.

Before she could talk any longer, I silenced her with a Kiss. As usual, a blush appeared on her cheeks.

Yuki: (while chuckling) I wish to see that face every day. It would brighten my whole day.

We talked a little and now I was ready to leave for my home. But Mayu dropped a topic that I never thought about.

Mayu: Can you tell me what are you hiding behind your back? The time I was hugging you in the morning I felt something hard there.

Oh no! I need a response quickly...

Yuki: That must be my hunch I suppose.

Mayu: Seriously Yuki quit lying. Tell me the truth.

With a deep breath, I was ready to say it...

Yuki: Let's go inside your room I will show you.

As we went inside, She sat near the bed observing me.

Yuki: Here, Take a look.

With that, I removed my shirt revealing that device in the back.

Yuki: It's called Steelbyte. It has features like Grappling hooks, Gliding and many more.

Mayu: Why did you never tell me about it?

Yuki: I don't want to drag you into this mess. I wanted to deal with it on my own. What if I lose you?

Mayu: Isn't that something you should be worrying about yourself rather than me?

Yuki: I but...

Mayu: You don't get to choose what I do. I will be helping you from now on and that is my decision.

Somewhere in a dimly lit warehouse.

Furuya Suzuki, stood before a figure, his boss, his expression apologetic.

Furuya: I'm sorry, I couldn't eliminate Yuki.

The boss's voice was cold and calculated.

Boss: Your failure disappoints me, Furuya. But perhaps there's another way to achieve our goal.

Furuya's brow furrowed in confusion.

Furuya: What do you mean?

The boss's tone took on a sinister edge.

Boss: You will enrol as a student at Ace Academy.

Furuya's eyes widened, disbelief evident.

Furuya: Join the academy? But won't that put me at greater risk?

Boss: Sometimes, you must walk through the fire to achieve your objectives. Don't underestimate the power of being on the inside.

Furuya hesitated, torn between fear and determination. The boss's words held a chilling promise, and Furuya couldn't ignore the gravity of the situation.

Furuya: Alright, I'll do it. But what's the plan?

As the conversation continued, Furuya found himself entangled in a web of intrigue and danger. The boss's intentions remained shrouded in mystery, but Furuya knew he had little choice but to follow the path laid out before him.

Somewhere in Osaka...

Uncle Kaito, a scientific visionary, stood surrounded by holographic blueprints. These blueprints, laden with intricate details, weren't just any plans—they were meant to elevate Steelbyte, the device embedded within Yuki. Kaito's dedication to his nephew's safety was unwavering, and he saw this moment as an opportunity to make a good thing even better.

The lab was a symphony of softly whirring machines, screens flashing complex data, and shelves adorned with state-of-the-art equipment. Amid this high-tech ambience, Kaito's determination burned bright. His promise to Yuki's father—to protect Yuki at all costs—was a promise he intended to keep, even if it meant pushing the boundaries of technology.

Kaito: Let's enhance Steelbyte. I will make it as perfect as it can be. It must be used at its full potential.

Kaito mused, his eyes sparkling with excitement. His ideas flowed like a river as he pondered over the modifications he could introduce. Perhaps a more responsive thermal locator or a quicker recharging mechanism or lower heating times could be integrated. Kaito knew that every enhancement was a step towards preparing Yuki for the challenges that lay ahead in his life.

As he immersed himself in lines of code and calculations, Kaito's thoughts drifted to the mysteries that his life might hold. He has recently been through a situation after *Beep* happened.

(Inner thoughts- Yea had to beep that but don't worry he wasn't cursing or anything. Sorry for that let's move on..)

With a swift gesture, a holographic model of Steelbyte materialized before him. Kaito's fingers danced over the blueprint, each touch a stroke of innovation. As much as he was a scientist, he was Yuki's guardian, determined to provide him with the tools necessary to thrive in this world of heightened rivalry and hidden truths.

Kaito's gaze shifted from the holographic model to the panorama of city lights outside the window. The twinkling lights of Osaka mirrored the potential that lay ahead. With a determined nod, Kaito understood that he was crafting a future where Yuki could flourish. The night was young, and Kaito was prepared to continue his work, using his expertise to pave the way for his nephew's success.

Shifting to Valerie...

Valerie walked toward her home, a sense of satisfaction in her heart. She was about to reach her door when she noticed Ayaka Takanashi waiting there.

Valerie: Ayaka? What brings you here?

Ayaka's grin was infectious.

Ayaka: Just thought I'd surprise you. How's academy life treating you?

Valerie: It's been a whirlwind, but I'm loving every minute of it.

They chatted about Ayaka's decision to join Ace Academy, her excitement evident.

Ayaka: Starting on Monday! Can you believe it?

Valerie: "That's amazing news, Ayaka! I'm thrilled for you.

Their conversation continued with a mix of catching up and sharing aspirations. As they talked, Ayaka shared her enthusiasm for the challenges that lay ahead, and Valerie couldn't help but feel a sense of camaraderie with her cousin.

Ayaka: I can't wait to be part of the academy life, just like you.

Valerie: You're going to love it. And hey, I'll be here to show you the ropes.

As their conversation neared its end, Ayaka revealed her plans to join the academy on Monday.

Ayaka: See you there, Cousin.

As Ayaka left, Valerie couldn't help but feel a surge of pride and excitement for her cousin's new journey. It was a reminder of the bonds that held them together and the shared experiences that awaited them.

The scene shifted to a quiet corner of the mall's top floor, far away from the hustle and bustle of shoppers. It was just Hitomi and me, the world around us fading into the background. This was our hidden haven, a space where we could talk without interruptions.

A faint cloud seemed to hang over Hitomi, a hint of sadness in her eyes. It wasn't something glaring, but I knew her well enough to catch the slightest shifts in her mood.

Shou: Is something bothering you, Hitomi?

Hitomi sighed softly, her gaze drifting elsewhere.

Hitomi: It's nothing major, just some personal thoughts that I can't shake off.

As we continued chatting, I couldn't shake off the feeling that she was holding something back. Our conversations were always honest, and her sudden distance raised concerns within me.

The atmosphere grew tenser, and just as I was gathering the courage to pry a little deeper, Hitomi's demeanour shifted. Her attention was fixed on a glass of water on the table, and before I could process it, the glass lifted a bit from the surface.

Shou: Wait, did you just...?

Hitomi nodded slowly, a mix of sadness and regret in her expression.

Hitomi: Shou, there's something I've kept from you. I have this ability. I can control things with my mind.

My eyes widened as I saw the glass floating in mid-air before gently returning to its place on the table.

Shou: You can control objects with your thoughts? Why didn't you tell me?

Hitomi lowered her gaze, her voice softening.

Hitomi: I didn't want you to worry. It's a power that I thought could bring trouble, so I kept it hidden.

Her confession struck me deeply. Hitomi had always been my ally, my friend, and my support. Seeing her reveal a side of her that she had concealed left me stunned.

She reached out and took my hand, her touch comforting and reassuring. Through that simple touch, I felt the weight of the emotions she held inside.

Hitomi: Shou, I need to thank you. For everything. You've been a friend, a pillar of strength. You've done more for me than I can express.

Before I could fully comprehend the situation, she leaned in and kissed me softly, a kiss that felt like a lingering farewell. As we parted, her eyes held a determination that I couldn't ignore.

Hitomi: This is the last time you'll see me as your ally. From now on, I'll be someone different. Please, forget about me.

I watched in a mixture of shock and disbelief as she took a step back and gracefully leapt off the rooftop. Her scarf billowed behind her as she used her grappling hooks to vanish into the distance.

The realization hit me like a tidal wave – she was gone. I stood there, devastated by the abrupt departure. Everything that we had shared, the camaraderie, the moments of friendship – it felt like they were all tinged with a sense of deception.

Tears welled up in my eyes, and I cried, the pain of loss engulfing me. It felt like my world had crumbled like the foundation of our connection had been shaken to its core.

But even in the depths of my sorrow, a calming voice reached out to me. A stranger with a scarf stood by my side, extending a hand in support.

Unknown Boy: Hey, it's alright. I'm here for you.

I looked up at him, my heart heavy with grief. His presence was a lifeline when I felt like I was drowning in sadness.

Shou: My life is over... she's gone.

Unknown Boy: I understand how it feels. But life has a way of surprising us, of offering new beginnings when we least expect them.

As we spoke, his words worked like a balm, soothing the pain that threatened to consume me. He shared his own experiences and reminded me that even in moments of darkness, there could be a glimmer of hope.

Unknown Boy: Wait here for a moment. There's something I want to show you.

With a simple remote, a sort of flying vehicle appeared before us. Its appearance was both unexpected and reassuring, a symbol of the potential that lay ahead.

Unknown Boy: Take care, Shou. Remember that life has a way of revealing paths we never could have foreseen.

With those final words, the unknown boy activated that vehicle and soared into the sky, leaving behind a sense of peace and the promise of a future that was yet to unfold.

In a tall building near Ace Academy, a strange vehicle landed.

Mystery Girl: Finally, you're here. Why did it take so long? It's been an hour.

The guy removed his scarf to show his face. Another girl stood beside him, looking at the Academy.

Mystery Guy: Sorry, got caught up with work.

Mystery Girl: You're always like that, big bro.

Mystery Guy: Anyway, is the plan ready?

Mystery Girl: Yeah, but I think we need a bit more preparation before we put it into action.

Mystery Guy: Take your time, just make sure it works perfectly.

Mystery Girl: Don't worry, I won't disappoint my brother.

She leaned against my arm.

Mystery Guy: Give me some space, I'm not a little kid.

Mystery Girl: So, did you finally get a girlfriend? ♡

Mystery Guy: I don't waste my time like you do.

The scene shifts back to Yuki who is lying in his bed...

I arrived home after the talk with Mayu. I hope it all ends well. She is now a part of it. Not like she will listen to me even if I told her to stay away from it. That makes me a bit reassured but also worried. This might end in something good or something bad. Now is not the time to be worried anyway. My eyes were heavy, ready to surrender to sleep's embrace, when my phone erupted into a shrill ring. Kaori's name illuminated the screen, pulling me from the brink of slumber.

Yuki: Hello? ( I managed, my voice still tangled in a yawn. )

Kaori: Yuki, meet me at the park, right now

Urgency quivered in her words. The park? At this time of night? Confusion jolted me awake fully.

Yuki: What's up, Kaori?

Kaori: I'll fill you in when you're here. Come to the park near our academy. Hurry!

Her words hung in the air before the line fell silent. I let out a sigh, ridding myself of the last traces of drowsiness. Something was off, and as I prepped myself and headed to the garage, the night seemed to hold secrets just within reach.

Bonus:-

Sakura settled on the floor of Mahiru's cosy room, guitar in hand, looking both eager and unsure.

Sakura: Mahiru, are you sure about this? I've never played a guitar before.

Mahiru smiled reassuringly, adjusting the strap on her guitar.

Mahiru: Don't worry, Sakura. I'll start with the basics, and you'll catch on quickly.

With patience, Mahiru demonstrated how to hold the guitar and position the fingers for the first chord. Sakura watched intently, trying to mimic the movements.

Sakura: Like this? (she asked, attempting the chord.)

Mahiru: Almost there, Just press a bit harder on the strings.

As they continued, Sakura's fingers fumbled, producing a jumbled sound from the guitar. She chuckled sheepishly.

Sakura: I guess I'm not a natural.

Mahiru: (while chuckling) Nobody becomes a pro in one day. It takes practice and persistence.

Between strums and attempts, they chatted about classes, upcoming events, and the trials and tribulations of learning something new. Sakura's fingers grew sore, and she glanced at her watch.

Sakura: How about we take a break and tackle some of those math problems Professor assigned? I need your brainpower for that.

Mahiru agreed, putting aside her guitar and taking out her notebook. They delved into equations and theories, and Mahiru explained concepts patiently.

Midway through a particularly challenging problem, Sakura grinned slyly.

Sakura: Hey, Mahiru, speaking of lessons, any tips on catching Yuki's attention?

Mahiru's cheeks tinged pink, and she stuttered a response.

Mahiru: S-Sakura, that's not what I—

Sakura laughed, nudging Mahiru playfully.

Sakura: I'm just teasing you! But you know, you do have a pretty obvious crush.

Mahiru sighed, hiding her embarrassment behind her notebook.

Mahiru: It's not that simple.

Sakura: Oh, come on, Mahiru. I've seen you watching him during practice. You're like a love-struck puppy.

Mahiru: It's not like that, Sakura. (Her blush deepened)

Sakura: Okay, okay. But if you ever want advice on winning his heart, you know who to ask.

Mahiru: I appreciate the offer, but I think I'll stick to practising guitar for now.

Their laughter filled the room as they continued with their homework, the atmosphere light and friendly. Through shared challenges and laughter, Sakura and Mahiru's bond deepened. The guitar lesson might not have made Sakura a guitar prodigy, but it certainly added a new melody to their friendship – one of shared laughter, support, and a few playful teases along the way.
