Chapter 1 - THE DARKEST DAY CHAPTER ONE

CHAPTER 1

THE DARKEST DAY

Just when you think life cannot get any worse, destiny finds a way to prove you wrong.

No one knows what fate has written for them.

The future arrives without warning, carrying blessings or tragedies in equal measure. Yet fear is no reason to stop living. If anything, it is a reason to embrace every moment before it slips away.

That morning had begun like any other.

Claire Hogues and her best friend, Shayna, spent the afternoon wandering through crowded shops, searching for the perfect gift for Claire's parents' wedding anniversary.

They laughed over ridiculous decorations, argued over wrapping paper, and imagined the look of surprise on her parents' faces.

Neither of them knew that before the day ended, their world would be shattered.

The mansion stood unusually silent when they arrived.

Claire frowned as she stepped through the grand entrance.

"That's strange," she murmured.

Normally, the house buzzed with activity. Staff moved through the halls, guards stood watch at every entrance, and somewhere in the distance her grandmother's voice could always be heard giving instructions.

Today there was nothing.

Only silence.

A silence so heavy it seemed to suffocate the air.

"Maybe they're setting up some kind of surprise?" Claire suggested, forcing a smile.

Shayna didn't answer.

Something felt wrong.

Terribly wrong.

The moment they entered the main living room, the gifts slipped from Claire's hands.

The box hit the floor with a dull thud.

For a second, her mind refused to process what her eyes were seeing.

Her father.

Her mother.

Her grandmother.

Motionless.

Surrounded by crimson stains spreading across the polished floor.

The room spun.

The world tilted beneath her feet.

Yet somehow, impossibly, Claire laughed.

A small nervous laugh escaped her lips.

"Is this... some kind of Halloween prank?"

Shayna stared at her in horror.

Claire stepped forward slowly.

"Seriously, Mom? Dad? Nana?"

Her voice trembled.

"You can stop now."

No response.

The silence deepened.

"Okay, this isn't funny anymore."

Still nothing.

Claire forced another laugh.

"Come on. You got me. Congratulations."

She turned toward Shayna.

"Don't you think this is ridiculous?"

Shayna's eyes filled with tears.

The reality was becoming impossible to ignore.

"Claire..."

"No."

Claire shook her head immediately.

"No."

She knelt beside her family, her hands trembling as she reached toward them.

Her breathing became uneven.

"No..."

Shayna swallowed hard and forced herself to speak.

"I know it's difficult to accept, but..."

The words caught in her throat.

"They're gone."

Claire remained frozen.

Her expression became unreadable.

Almost frighteningly calm.

She sat there among the ruins of her world as if waiting for someone to wake her from a nightmare.

Minutes passed.

Then she slowly rose to her feet.

Her gaze locked onto Shayna's.

Cold.

Empty.

Broken.

"I, Claire Hogues, will not shed a tear."

Shayna stared at her.

"What?"

Claire laughed softly.

A hollow sound that echoed through the room.

"I won't cry for people who broke their promise."

Her voice cracked.

"They said they'd always be with me."

A painful smile appeared on her face.

"So who gave them permission to leave?"

Tears streamed down Shayna's cheeks.

"Claire..."

"Did I?" Claire continued.

"Did I tell them they could go?"

She shook her head.

"No."

Her eyes drifted toward the lifeless figures on the floor.

"But they're gone anyway."

Shayna's heart shattered at the sight.

This wasn't strength.

It was shock.

Pure, devastating shock.

"Say something," Shayna pleaded.

"Yell. Scream. Cry."

Her voice trembled.

"Please, Claire."

Claire remained still.

"I can't."

The words were barely audible.

"What?"

"I can't."

For the first time, real pain surfaced in her eyes.

"If I accept it..."

Her voice broke.

"If I cry, then it becomes real."

The room fell silent again.

A silence filled with grief too deep for words.

Shayna stepped closer.

"This isn't funny anymore."

A bitter laugh escaped Claire.

"Kaboom."

The single word carried years of hurt.

"That's exactly my point."

She looked at her family once more.

"It's not funny when people play with your emotions."

Her hands curled into fists.

"It's not funny when promises are broken."

A tear finally escaped, sliding down her cheek.

"It's not funny when the people who swore they'd stay... leave you behind."

Before she could say another word, Shayna slapped her across the face.

The sharp sound echoed through the room.

Claire froze.

Shayna's entire body shook.

"Get a hold of yourself!"

Tears poured down her face.

"Your family is gone, Claire!"

Her voice cracked with heartbreak.

"And pretending otherwise won't bring them back."

For a moment neither girl spoke.

Claire slowly raised a hand to her stinging cheek.

Then she smiled sadly.

A smile filled with unbearable sorrow.

"Maybe you're right."

Another tear followed the first.

Then another.

Then another.

And finally, the walls she had built around her heart began to crumble.

The darkest day of Claire Hogues' life had only just begun.
