Chapter 1 - Prologue

Detective Rogers and Officer Gibson were cruising in their patrol car on a quiet night. It was just past midnight, and the streets were empty. Rogers turned to Gibson and let out a sigh.

"Man, this job can be so boring sometimes," he said, looking out at the dark streets.

"I hear ya," Rogers replied, stifling a yawn.

As they drove through a particularly quiet neighborhood, Gibson suddenly spotted something in the distance. "Hey, look over there," he said, pointing to a dark figure lurking behind a tree.

Rogers leaned forwards to get a better look, "What do you think it could be?"

"I don't know, but let's check it out," Gibson said, as he pulled the car over to the side of the road.

The two policemen exited their patrol car and cautiously approached the dark figure. They took measured steps, keeping their eyes on the potential threat, hands on their holsters.

As they drew closer, they noticed a faint movement in the darkness. Gibson's heart began to race as he imagined the worst-case scenarios: a burglar, a mugger, or even a murderer.

But as they reached the spot, they realized with relief that it was just a stray cat, huddled behind the tree, probably searching for food.

Gibson let out a chuckle, feeling a mix of emotions - relief, frustration, and amusement. Rogers also breathed a sigh of relief, but his face betrayed a hint of annoyance.

"Well, that was anticlimactic," Rogers said, shaking his head. "I was hoping for some action."

Gibson smirked, "I know, right? At least we know our instincts are working." He patted Rogers on the back before they returned to the patrol car.

Gibson switched on the radio, hoping to catch some news that could liven up their dull shift. But all they heard was a weather report and some commercials.

"Ugh, this is worse than watching paint dry," Rogers said, reaching for a donut from the back seat.

Rogers chuckled, taking a bite of the donut. "Yeah, but we could at least have some action to break up the monotony."

As the patrol car sped off into the night, the cat sat watching from the sidewalk. Its eyes tracked the flashing red and blue lights until they disappeared into the distance, leaving behind the quiet stillness of the street.

Slowly, the cat's shadow began to stretch and elongate, taking on an unnaturally distorted shape that seemed to crawl like a living thing. The cat appeared oblivious to the bizarre transformation of its shadow, continuing to watch with a detached curiosity as the light from the police car faded into the night.

As the cat slipped into the darkness, a shadowy hand emerged from the distorted shadow. The hand was indistinct and insubstantial, like a dark mist taking on the form of a limb. It was joined by another hand, and the two slowly extended into arms. As the arms became more defined, the fingers grew into razor-sharp claws that dug into the ground, leaving deep furrows in the pavement.

Suddenly, a head emerged from the darkness, accompanied by a torso. The head was crowned with black and red streaks of hair, which fell to just below the shoulders. The eyes of the head had a golden glow to them, and its face was twisted into a snarling, fanged grin. As the rest of the shadowy figure emerged, it became clear that this was no ordinary creature - it was a monster straight out of a nightmare, with razor-sharp claws and razor-sharp teeth that glinted in the moonlight.
