Chapter 5 - Shadow Wolves(2)

"Please excuse me, I heard you guys talking about some demon, do you mind telling me more about it?" I asked as I dropped their orders on the table.

The one that seemed to be the leader glanced at me for a while and then looked away, at first, he didn't want to reply to me but after a minute, he turned to me.

"Is this also your job here? To question your customers?" He asked me.

I knew something like this was going to be the case because looking at him, he didn't seem to be the friendly type rather, he looked more like a proud person. Nevertheless, I wasn't going to give up no matter what he says.

"No! Not at all! I just want to know more about the demons you guys were talking about just now, nothing more," I replied, trying my best to sound nice.

The guy began to laugh, same with the other four of his friends. This wasn't the first time something like this was happening and so I was calm, I waited until they were done laughing.

"He doesn't know a thing about demons, isn't that surprising?" He turned and whispered to one of his friends, the one by his right.

"It is, but I think he isn't educated at all so you shouldn't blame him," his friend whispered back and then shot me a glance.

"Then he should go to school and quit disturbing us," the leader replied back and then turned to look at me. "What do you really want to know? I'll tell you but you'll have to pay for one meal, is there a yes?" He asked me with a smirk on his face.

'Does he not feel shameful even for a bit?' I asked myself inwardly as I tried to not frown. A plate of his meal is ten silver coins, how the hell am I going to pay for it?

I clench my fist as I stare at him, if not for the confusion inside my head, will I be here licking his ass? All of a sudden, I began to hear of demons and shadow wolves, of course, I will be confused and curious as well.

"Don't worry about it, enjoy your meal," I said and bowed slightly at them before walking away.

"I guess he couldn't afford to pay for the meal!"

I heard one of them say and the rest began to laugh. 'Who the fuck says I can't pay for the meal?' I yelled in my head and clicked my tongue. Those guys were something else, I shouldn't have even gone to them.

More customers began to troop in and I had more work to do, I didn't have time to dwell on my problems as my daily pay was something I wouldn't mess with.

Nearing the end of the day, Madame Lene asked me to close the inn. She told me to go and meet the lady who she had earlier talked about and I agreed.

After I closed the inn, I hurried home, ate some meals that I brought back with me and then took my bath. When I was done, I brought out the phone and the piece of paper Madam Lene had given to me from my pocket and began to dial the number.

After two rings, the lady picked up the call.

"Hello, are you the one that madame Lene had informed me about?" She asked, her voice sounding urgent.

I guess madame Lene had already told the lady about me, I wonder what she told her exactly. "Yes, I am the one," I replied after a while.

"Thank goodness, I was already beginning to lose hope. I'll send you an address, you have to come fast," the lady said and then ended up the call.

It didn't take up to a minute when my phone rang, I checked and it was a message carrying the lady's address. Not surprisingly, she was living in the town and so I got up and left the house. when I got to the road, I entered a cab which will take me to the place for five silver coins. To be honest, it was pretty difficult agreeing to pay the five silver coins but remembering that madame Lene had told me that the money I would make will be more than the one I make daily, I had no choice but to close my eyes and agree.

Soon, I got to the town and following the address on my phone, I got to the lady's house and then knocked on the gate. An elderly lady soon came and opened the gate, she was quite taken aback the moment she saw me. I wouldn't blame her for it, I solely blame my body statue.

I wasn't all that tall but at the same time, wasn't short. The only problem was how pale I looked, sometimes, people around me would think I was suffering from some kind of ailment.

"Are you Arthur?"

I heard the lady ask me while trying to stop herself from saying anything contrarily to what she was supposed to say.

"Yes, I am," I replied.

She looked all over me, starting from my head to the toe, I began to wonder why she was staring at me that way. At a time, I couldn't take it again and decided to ask her, "Mam, is there a problem? Why do you keep looking at me that way?"

"Are you really Arthur? The young man madame Lene told me about?" She asked with a slight frown on her face.

"Yes, of course, would I lie about my identity?" I asked in return. "Mam, I know you are having your doubts about me and it is fine, but allow me to show you what I can do. Just take me to where you keep your animals and I'll do my job well." I added. As I said, I wasn't blaming her for her behaviour towards me, it's only a blessing that she hasn't rejected me yet.

After a long moment of thinking, she sighed deeply and replied. "Fine, follow me!"
