Chapter 4 - Shadow Wolves(1)

After I had finished taking my bath, I wore my clothes and dashed out without eating despite how hungry I am. I ran down the road, the day had already broken and so many people were now seen on the road as well.

I scurried to my workplace, it was an old inn that I heard had stayed for almost a hundred years starting from the owner's ancestor.

The owner is a kind old woman, apart from her, no one likes me even for a bit in the entire local street. She's the only one who had ever treated me nicely apart from my late parents and I appreciate her for that, it is only a pity that her husband has been late for a few years now while her only son was nowhere to be found.

"Good morning madam Lene!" I greeted as I went into the inn. Her full name is Selene but she had told everyone to call her madam Lene. She turned around and with her usual friendly smile, she gazed at me for a short while and then frowned her face.

"Why is your face looking so pale? And your eyes, they are so pale, why is that so and where went you last night?" She questioned with a sharp gaze.

To be honest, last night was the day I made up my mind to die and so after I closed from work, I headed straight to the expressway. But how was I going to bring myself to tell her this? She would curse me non-stop.

"Madam Lene, after I went home last night, I was busy thinking about my life and other jobs to add to this one I'm doing. I wasn't able to sleep at all," I replied, hoping that she wouldn't see through my facade.

She stared at me for quite some time before letting out a sigh, I guess she believed.

"Well, I think I might have something for you," she said all of a sudden. I gazed at her questionably and then she chuckled and turned around, she was heading straight to her counter. "Are you coming or not?" She asked without turning around.

I didn't know what the old lady was up to but I have a hunch that it will be something nice and so I followed her immediately.

She reached her counter and brought a cell phone, inwardly, I began to wonder why she was showing it to me.

"I know this won't be enough, but I'm sure it'll be very useful to you. This cell phone belonged to my son before he left, I'm pretty sure he won't be needing it again and so I have decided to give it to you," she said as she shoved the cell phone into my hand.

I collected it and began to stare at it, it still looked new like something that hasn't been used at all. "Thank you so much, madame Lene!" I said happily.

"It's nothing at all!" She said to me with her usual smile, "Ehen, there's one more thing!" She suddenly added, causing me to look at her curiously.

"What is that, madame Lene?" I asked.

"You made mention of looking for more jobs and I have an idea of what you might need. Here, take this number and dial it, I have a friend who keeps complaining that her animals keep missing at night," she said and handed me a piece of paper with a number on it.

I collected the paper and began to stare at it, inwardly, I couldn't understand why she was telling me about it, when did my job become going after criminals?

"Madam Lene, I don't quite understand what you mean, when did I start chasing after criminals?" I asked her.

"About that, I do not understand as well. She made mention of some shadow wolves, so I think you should call her yourself and ask about it. I heard the pay is high and I decided to tell you about it," she replied and chuckled in the end.

I guess she knew how much I loved money, well, who doesn't love money? But hold on.....

"Shadow wolves? What are those?" I suddenly asked. I have never heard of them before.

"You don't know?" She asked back with a disbelieving look on her face.

I, in reply, shrugged my shoulders. I didn't know nor have heard about them.

"Son, I think you need to go to school to enhance your knowledge, you only know about money, nothing else!" She queried and then sighed. "Well, I don't blame you though. Shadow wolves are demon wolves, they feed on the blood of animals and only come out at night. That is all that I know, you can find out more about them from the lady."

This was still confusing me, since when did we start having demon wolves around? I didn't still understand a thing she had said, could it be that she was joking? But looking at her right now, she seemed quite serious about the whole thing.

"Madame Lene, I think I'll need to call the lady later but for now, we've got customers," I suddenly said, drawing her attention to the few people that had entered the inn.

She looked ahead and seeing them, she gasped. "That is true! Quick, go get their orders!" She instructed and I nodded and ran off to do my job.

I rushed over to the group of people who were already seated and bent down to take their orders.

"Get us five plates of peppered fish sauce and a bottle of good wine!" The one who seemed to be the leader of the group said while the others began to nod their heads.

"Alright, I'll be back in a minute!" I replied and began to walk towards the kitchen. While I was going, I overheard them talking about defeating some demons and so I made up my mind to ask them some questions.
