Chapter 11 - The Oath

"The rule is nullified from now on."

Laws were made by men who fear losing control. I was not one of them. So when I said it, I meant it.

Conor stiffened behind the desk. The quill in his hand paused mid-word, its tip bleeding a blot of ink onto the parchment like it was predicting trouble.

He didn't look up at first. He didn't need to. I could already hear the questions spiraling inside his head. I could see the panic in his eyes.

Conor was the man who had grown in this castle with me. He knew every dusty rule, every tradition, every sacred commandment and of course, he understood the weight of what I was saying.

"Alpha…" He said carefully, "You know what that means."

I turned my head slowly toward him. "I know exactly what it means."

Breaking the vow of purity, the sacred law of service meant cutting through the kingdom's oldest commandment. It was tradition, religion, and control all wrapped in one. No one ever dared to nullify them.
