Chapter 23 - The Promise

As I lay in bed I stare up at the ceiling while letting my mind wander, thinking about the day.

(Flashback)

After Kadachi walks out of the room Kaito tosses me an envelope and I casually pick it up to examine it.

"This will be your first mission, are you sure you are ready?"

I smile and nod feeling happy about finally being accepted.

"Of course I'm ready."

Kaito frowns.

"When are you planning on telling him?"

I sigh while sticking the envelope into a hidden pocket in my dress.

"I...I don't know if I should Kaito..."

I clench my fists and Kaito chuckles.

"Do you remember what my master said?"

I thought back about it and nodded remembering the scene in my head.

(It was soon after I was released...Kaito came over with his master when Kadachi was away.)

-Flashback within a flashback-

"I'm Vaughn Nexus, Kaito has told me your predicament and also says your related?"

I take a peek at Kaito who had a very serious expression on his face. I nod at the man and he proceeded.

"At Kaito's request, I'm willing to train you if you want that is."

Startled by the sudden offer I look up at him staring into his golden eyes, he was an older man who looked to be in his 60s, he had a calm and wise expression. I then look over at Kaito who nods at me.

(If I can learn self-defense...then maybe...)

"Yes please, that would be amazing!"

Mr. Nexus smiles at my response but the next sentence sent chills down my spine.

"Good! Then be ready by the weekend and if you are late even once you will be forced to do 100 laps around the training grounds, also..."

He looks at my hair and then back into my eyes.

"Your hair is too long and will just get in the way, either cut it or keep it in a ponytail."

A sweat drop forms on my forehead and I awkwardly laugh.

"Oh uh ok, I- I mean Yes Sir!"

He chuckles and I see his hand draw near my face, I stay still as he places his hand onto my head.

"Soon, you will be able to do whatever it is you need to do to protect yourself and others, use this training you receive for good and not evil... that's all I ask."

I smile with confidence.

"Master, I promise I will be a good pupil!"

(end of a flashback within a flashback back to the first flashback.)

"Then if you remember then why is it a problem to tell Kadachi? He will find out whether you tell him or not it'll be better if he heard it from you."

I look down into my lap.

"Because he told me when we get out of the hospital that-"

(end of flashback)

I look over at Kadachi who was still fast asleep as I remember his words.

(That he was afraid.)

(flashback to the night we ran into his brother and Luna.)

After getting back into the room we could hear a loud storm begin to rage outside as lightning and thunder rippled through the sky making the small dark hospital room we were in light up for a few seconds at a time.

Kadachi sits on the edge of the bed and sighs.

"You ok?"

I walk closer to him and he pulls me into a hug burying his head into my chest, I couldn't help but feel a bit flustered.

"Kairi, you shouldn't be worrying about me right now dummy."

Though his words sounded playful his voice seemed off, I could feel my heart start to race as I begin to worry if he was upset.

"I'm sorry..."

Shocked by his apology I stutter over my words.

"N-no do not be sorry you did nothing wrong!"

I feel Kadachi lift his head up to look at me but it being so dark I couldn't see his face clearly, I instinctively reach my hand up feeling his cheek, touching something wet I feel my heart ache upon realizing what the substance was.

(He's...crying?)

"Kadachi you-"

Kadachi interrupts me by kissing me, as if my body was butter and he was a flame It practically made me melt into his arms, once he pulled away he whispers in my ear as a flash of lightning lights up the dark room.

"I was afraid...afraid of you not waking up and afraid of losing you, and when you finally woke up!... I thought this fear would go away but now it just feels even more intense because I don't know who did this and I feel like I've completely failed you so Kairi, I'm...sorry!"

I clutch his shirt as tears stream down my face hearing how hurt he must have been this entire time.

(This isn't just about me anymore...he is involved in this just as much as I am and I can't neglect the fact his mother also died too...he's scared of losing me too...)

I lean my head on his and wipe his tear away and softly smile at him to try to show a little reassurance.

"It'll be ok, I'm here now, and...you haven't failed me once. What others do are no one else fault except themselves. I promise I won't ever leave you."

(End of flashback.)

I crawl under his arms and start to cuddle with him.

(I mean to keep this promise, I'll train for my whole life if it means being able to stay by your side.)

(The next day)

Once Kadachi leaves for work I pull out both the papers I got in the mail and the envelope Kaito gave me to look over them, I first look over the papers in the mail, all of them were pictures of me over the past year, each picture had a red x over my face, then I get to the last page which had some writing in red and read.

"Cheater"

I sigh and toss the papers into the trash bin and open the envelope Kaito gave me, it was an invitation to an event for the following weekend. Behind the invitation was a paper with just one sentence.

"Target: Hitotsu Shiho, Gender: Male, get details on order 66. Passcode: Full moon and starry night in the same sentence. Good luck."

(This is good, Kadachi has to go to this event too so maybe I can tag along with him and use this as a cover.)
