Chapter 38 - Chapter 38: Make The Driver Realises His Mistake

"Are you absolutely sure this is the correct route to where I requested?" Qiao Meixia asked again, her tone remaining completely calm, level, and entirely unhurried.

"Of course it is. I have been working professionally as a driver for more than fifteen years now. I know these city roads and shortcuts like the back of my hand." The driver replied, forcing an air of confidence into his voice.

Qiao Meixia fell silent. To the driver, it appeared as though she had dropped the suspicious subject entirely. She simply lowered her head and began casually tapping away, playing with her smartphone. Seeing this compliant behaviour, the driver secretly let out a long sigh of relief, believing he had successfully fooled her. However, that sense of relief lasted for only a few fleeting seconds.

"Su Gongli. Forty-nine years old. Divorced. One son and one daughter named Su Wengli and Su Weiwei. Both of your children are currently studying as students at Ten High School." Qiao Meixia suddenly began reciting, her voice completely smooth and detached.

The driver's expression instantly changed, the colour draining from his face.

"Severe gambling addiction. Your current outstanding debt is approximately forty-three thousand yuan. Furthermore, your ex-wife is currently preparing legal action to fight for full, exclusive custody of both of your children."

The more Qiao Meixia spoke, the paler and more ghostly the driver's face became.

His hands began to tremble violently against the leather of the steering wheel.

Screech!

Panicking completely, the driver suddenly slammed his foot down on the brakes. Fortunately, it was so early in the morning that there were no other vehicles immediately behind them on this deserted stretch of road.

The car came to an abrupt, jarring stop right by the dirt shoulder of the road. The driver hurriedly turned his entire body around in his seat and stared at Qiao Meixia in absolute, unadulterated horror.

"W-What? How? How on earth do you know all of that?!" The driver asked, his voice shaking uncontrollably as a cold sweat broke out across his forehead.

Qiao Meixia calmly lifted her gaze from her phone screen, her eyes boring into his.

"If you do not want your miserable life to be completely and utterly ruined, you had better turn this car around and send me to my designated location immediately." Qiao Meixia stated coldly, her voice carrying an undeniable weight of authority.

The driver stared at her for several long, suffocating seconds.

At that exact moment, he felt an icy chill run down his spine. The young, fragile-looking girl sitting quietly in his backseat felt far more terrifying than anyone or anything he had ever encountered in his entire life.

In the end, he did not dare to utter another single word of protest. He silently turned back around, shifted the gears, and restarted the car. Soon enough, the vehicle swerved back onto the asphalt and returned to the correct route.

Qiao Meixia watched through the side window as the remote surroundings gradually changed. When she finally saw the familiar, bustling city roads appearing once again, she became silent and simply continued looking outside. The rest of the journey passed in a heavy, dead quiet.

After some time, the car finally arrived safely at her designated destination. Before getting out of the backseat, Qiao Meixia looked up at the driver through the rear-view mirror one last time.

"Focus on living your own life properly from now on. Otherwise, you will only continue sinking into the dark until there is absolutely nothing left of you." Qiao Meixia advised calmly, her words serving as both a warning and a piece of detached advice.

"Y-Yes... Yes, Ma'am..." The driver nodded his head repeatedly, looking thoroughly chastised. "I understand completely. I will not dare think about committing a crime ever again."

Only after receiving his earnest assurance did Qiao Meixia open the passenger door and step out of the vehicle.
