Now that Max and Daniel are officially Mermaidians, they have to put their powers to use. They decided that since they have supernatural abilities, it should be used for the greater good. They dived in and started digital training {Max's wrist watch}. Max wanted to see how fast he could go so they found a clearing under water, no kelp and less animals to disturb. He achieved a speed of Mach 1 and when he goes invisible, anybody or anything he touches goes invisible too. That was a great power.
Daniel learned he could only control plants and animals but not human beings. His fireballs, has he calls it, reached a new level. He could shoot them fast enough to a speed of 100miles/hour. They practiced for over three hours and got satisfied. Before they went home, a guard came to them and told Max that the queen requested for their acquaintance. She ordered them to recover a Black Phantom Stone, a rare volcanic glass-like gem that could bend light around it and it could only be found in around hydrothermal undersea vents. They agreed and quickly got to searching, but Max asked the watch how they will get all the way to the abyssal zone. The watch explained that for a few hours, mermen especially, could go deeper than that and that their tails where built with bioluminescence. They took it to consideration and went further deep. Daniel noticed that their tails where already glowing and also the new creatures they found on their way. Suddenly something appeared in front of them. It was a colossal squid, one of the biggest creatures on earth. When it was about to eat them whole, Max swiftly grabbed Daniel's hands and went invisible, it was hard for the squid to find them but he used his speed and swam away from the squid. They were free from it but they realized that they were at the midnight zone. They saw amazing creatures like sea shrimps, anglerfishes, barrel eyes, jellyfishes and some small octopus. Not soon, a goblin shark gobbled up the octopus and was going for Max's tail next. Daniel noticed the shark and quickly went into action. He shot a fireball right at the shark and it blew up. Pretty soon the same squid from earlier found them and grabbed Max and Daniel with its tentacles. They didn't think of any solution but when they taught all hope was lost, Daniel decided to control it and it actually worked. It released the tentacles and went back up.
They became proud of themselves and luckily found a vent covered with the gems. Max tried to reached for it but Daniel wanted to take the shot. As he grabbed one of the stones, and unexpected figure fell down from the surface and it seemed to be a whale fall heading for Daniel. Before he could make a move, the dead sperm whale as it seems, fell on Daniel's tail making him stuck in that particular spot. Max grabbed took the gem and started pulling Daniel out but he didn't have the strength for that. Time was running out as they were running out of oxygen and pressure was coming to them slowly. Daniel requested that Max should leave him here but he disagreed and tried again. Then he got an idea. Since the portion of Daniel's tail was not part of his human body, he suggested that he should retransform back and forth very fast so he could get unstuck. Daniel didn't see any other option considering the fact that he would die any other way, so he did the procedure and luckily nothing bad happened. He was free from the whale and they immediately head to the surface. They took a lung full of oxygen and were headed for the kingdom.
The queen applauded them for their hard work, saying that even their best scavengers could not retrieve the gem. They ascended to the surface with pride, oblivious to the critical mistake they had made just a few hours earlier, a misstep that would soon reveal consequences far beyond anything they had anticipated.
