Chapter 6 - The Truth He Tried to Hide

Morning didn't feel like morning.

Not after a night like that.

The sky was pale, the city slowly waking up—but for Ava, everything still felt trapped in the darkness of what she had stepped into.

She hadn't slept.

Rayan hadn't either.

He stood at the edge of the rooftop, staring at the horizon like it held answers he refused to share.

Ava watched him quietly.

"You're going to leave," she said.

It wasn't a question.

Rayan didn't turn.

"Yes."

The word hit instantly.

Sharp.

Unexpected.

Ava stood up.

"After everything?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady.

He finally looked at her.

"This isn't your world."

"You said that already."

"And you didn't listen."

Ava walked closer.

"Maybe I didn't want to."

That made him pause.

Just for a second.

But she noticed.

"You don't understand," Rayan said, his voice lower now. "Staying with me doesn't just put you in danger… it destroys everything you were before."

Ava's eyes locked onto his.

"Maybe I'm okay with that."

Silence.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

Rayan shook his head.

"No, you're not."

Before she could respond—

A sharp ringing sound cut through the air.

Rayan's phone.

Ava froze.

Because she had never seen him answer one before.

Not once.

But this time—

He did.

He stepped aside, turning his back slightly.

"Talk."

His voice changed.

Colder.

Sharper.

More dangerous.

Ava couldn't hear the other side.

But she didn't need to.

Rayan's expression darkened with every second.

His jaw tightened.

His grip on the phone hardened.

Then—

He said something that made Ava's heart stop.

"…She's not part of this."

A pause.

"I said I'll handle it."

Another pause.

Longer this time.

And then—

The words that shattered everything—

"If I have to choose… I won't hesitate."

The call ended.

Silence followed.

Ava's chest felt tight.

Her thoughts spinning.

"What did that mean?" she asked quietly.

Rayan didn't answer.

He just stood there.

Back facing her.

"Rayan," she said again, stronger this time. "What did you mean by that?"

Slowly—

He turned.

And the look in his eyes—

It wasn't the same.

It wasn't soft.

It wasn't conflicted.

It was cold.

"I mean," he said calmly, "you shouldn't trust me."

Ava felt like the ground disappeared beneath her.

"That's not funny."

"I'm not joking."

She took a step back.

"Last night… everything you said—"

"Was necessary."

Her breath caught.

"Necessary?"

Rayan stepped closer.

But this time—

It didn't feel the same.

It didn't feel safe.

"It kept you alive," he said.

Ava shook her head.

"No… no, that's not all it was."

But deep down—

She wasn't sure anymore.

"Who were you talking to?" she asked.

A pause.

Then—

"My enemy."

Ava frowned.

"Then why did it sound like you were working with them?"

That question—

Hit exactly where it hurt.

Rayan didn't answer immediately.

And that silence—

Was enough.

Ava's eyes widened.

"No…" she whispered.

Rayan finally spoke.

Low.

Controlled.

"There are things you don't understand."

"Then make me understand!"

Her voice cracked.

"Because right now it feels like I just trusted the wrong person."

Silence again.

Then—

Rayan said something that broke whatever fragile trust they had built—

"Maybe you did."

Ava stepped back.

Heart racing.

Eyes filled with confusion, anger, and something worse—

Hurt.

"So what now?" she asked.

Rayan looked at her.

Really looked.

And for a moment—

There it was again.

That conflict.

That hesitation.

But it disappeared just as quickly.

"You walk away," he said.

Ava froze.

"And you?"

He didn't answer.

Because they both already knew.

He wasn't someone who walked away.

He was someone who stayed—

In the middle of danger.

Even if it meant losing everything else.

Ava swallowed hard.

"Say it," she whispered.

Rayan's jaw tightened.

"Say what?"

"That everything last night meant nothing."

A long pause.

And then—

The lie.

"It didn't."

That was it.

That was the moment everything changed.

Because this time—

Ava didn't argue.

Didn't fight.

Didn't stay.

She turned.

And walked away.

Not knowing—

That behind her—

Rayan's hand clenched into a fist.

And for the first time—

He looked like he had just lost something he couldn't get back.
