Chapter 5 - The Distance That Doesn’t Exist

They didn't stop running.

Not when the gunshots faded.

Not when the streets grew emptier.

Not even when Ava's legs felt like they would give up beneath her.

Rayan didn't slow down.

Didn't look back.

Didn't let go.

"Rayan… I can't—" Ava gasped, her voice breaking as she stumbled.

Before she could fall—

He caught her.

Strong.

Steady.

Too close.

"Just a little further," he said.

His voice wasn't cold this time.

It wasn't distant.

It was… softer.

And that confused her more than anything else.

After what felt like forever, they finally stopped.

An old rooftop.

High above the empty streets.

The city stretched out below them—quiet, unaware of the chaos that had just unfolded.

Ava leaned against the wall, trying to catch her breath.

"You're insane," she muttered.

Rayan exhaled lightly, glancing at her.

"I've been called worse."

A faint silence fell between them.

But this silence—

It felt different.

Less dangerous.

More… real.

"Why me?" Ava asked suddenly.

Rayan looked away.

"You were there."

"That's not a reason."

"It's enough."

Ava shook her head.

"No," she said softly. "It's not."

Rayan stayed quiet.

And that silence said everything.

Ava took a step closer.

"You could've left me," she said. "Back there. You could've saved yourself."

"I did save myself," he replied.

She frowned.

"How?"

His eyes met hers.

And for a moment—

The walls he had built around himself… cracked.

"Because I didn't leave you."

Ava's breath caught.

The words weren't loud.

But they hit harder than anything else.

"You don't even know me," she whispered.

Rayan stepped closer.

Close enough that she could feel his presence, his warmth, his danger.

"I know enough."

Her heart started racing again.

But this time—

It wasn't just fear.

"You're not afraid of me," he said quietly.

Ava hesitated.

Then told the truth—

"I should be."

A faint smile appeared on his lips.

"Yeah," he said. "You should."

But neither of them moved.

Neither of them stepped away.

The distance between them—

It didn't exist anymore.

The wind brushed past them, carrying the cold night air.

Ava wrapped her arms around herself slightly.

Without a word—

Rayan took off his jacket and placed it over her shoulders.

She looked up at him, surprised.

"You're full of contradictions," she said.

"Only with you."

That made her pause.

For a moment—

The world slowed down.

No danger.

No chaos.

Just two people standing too close—

In a situation that made no sense.

"Rayan," she said softly.

"Hmm?"

"If I stay with you…"

She hesitated.

Then finished—

"Will this ever end?"

He didn't answer immediately.

His eyes searched hers.

As if trying to decide how much truth she could handle.

Then finally—

"It doesn't end," he said.

Her heart sank.

"It only gets worse."

Silence.

Ava let out a slow breath.

"Then why does it feel like I shouldn't walk away?"

Rayan stepped even closer.

Now—

There was barely any space left between them.

"Because," he said, his voice low and dangerously calm—

"You're already in too deep."

Ava looked at him.

At the danger.

At the truth.

And realized—

He was right.

This wasn't just fear anymore.

This wasn't just survival.

This was something else.

Something stronger.

Something louder.

Something that didn't care about consequences.

And maybe—

That was the most dangerous thing of all.
