Chapter 7 - Walking Away Changes Everything

Ava's footsteps echoed softly on the empty streets, but inside, her heart thundered like a war drum.

She had left him—Rayan—the man who had saved her life, who had drawn her into his darkness, who had made fear feel like attraction, and attraction feel like danger.

She didn't know where she was going. Maybe nowhere. Maybe somewhere far enough that he couldn't reach her.

The city seemed quieter without him. The neon lights blurred against the rain-slicked pavement. Every shadow felt heavier, as if warning her of the cost of leaving.

And yet… she walked.

She had to.

Hours passed.

Ava finally stopped at a small café tucked between abandoned buildings. The warm light spilling from its windows felt surreal. Safe. Ordinary.

She slid into a corner booth, hands wrapped around a cup of tea she didn't even taste. Her mind replayed every word, every look, every touch.

Rayan's words echoed louder than the city outside:

"Maybe you did trust the wrong person."

"It didn't mean anything."

"You walk away."

Ava pressed her hands to her face, trying to block the memory of his stormy eyes.

She hated him. She hated herself. She hated that she had believed in the illusion that maybe, just maybe, someone like him could care.

The bell above the café door jingled, pulling her from her thoughts.

A man walked in. Tall. Broad-shouldered. Eyes sharp. Face unfamiliar—but the energy… it was the same as him.

Ava stiffened.

He scanned the room quickly, his gaze landing on her almost immediately.

"Miss Ava?"

Her heart skipped.

"Yes?" she managed to whisper.

"I need to talk to you. It's about him."

Her stomach dropped.

"About… Rayan?"

The man nodded.

"You don't understand what you're dealing with. You think leaving him keeps you safe. It doesn't. It only makes you more visible."

Ava shook her head.

"I don't care anymore. I just want out. I want normal."

The man leaned closer, lowering his voice.

"Normal doesn't exist here. Not after last night. And not for him—or for you. You're part of something far bigger than either of you imagined."

Ava's chest tightened.

"What do you mean?"

"The people he's running from… they don't forget. They don't forgive. And now, you've been marked too."

She froze.

Marked.

The word was heavy. Terrifying. Inescapable.

Her pulse raced as a realization hit: leaving him hadn't freed her. It had only put her in even greater danger.

Outside, the city continued to hum with life, oblivious to the storm brewing in the shadows.

Ava felt trapped between two impossible choices: stay with the man she couldn't trust, or run into a world that wanted her dead.

She closed her eyes.

For the first time, she questioned everything.

And then, without warning, her phone buzzed.

A single message appeared:

"You can run… but you can't hide. —R"

Ava dropped the phone. Her breath caught.

Somewhere deep inside, she knew one truth:

She had already crossed the line.

She was too far gone.

And nothing—no choice, no escape, no distance—would ever change that.
