Chapter 8 - Behind the Walls He Built

Rayan stood on the same rooftop where he had left her, staring at the empty streets below.

The rain had stopped, but the world felt heavier, quieter, and somehow… emptier without her presence.

His jaw clenched. His fists tightened.

Ava had walked away.

And yet… he knew she wasn't safe.

He replayed the night's events in his mind over and over.

The gunshots. The chaos. Her trembling hands. The way her eyes had widened the moment danger had loomed closer.

He had saved her.

And then, he had pushed her away.

He didn't regret keeping her at arm's length. Not entirely.

He had built walls for a reason.

Walls she had dared to cross.

Walls he had hoped would protect her from the truth.

The truth.

Rayan let out a bitter laugh.

She didn't know who he really was. She didn't know the enemies he had made—or the ones he had barely survived.

She couldn't possibly understand that his world was a storm she could never outrun.

A knock at the rooftop door pulled him from his thoughts.

A familiar figure stepped inside.

"Another one spotted?" Rayan asked, already knowing the answer.

"Yes," said the informant, voice low. "Near the café. Female. Alone."

Rayan's gaze hardened.

"Send a warning. Make sure she knows nothing. She has to survive. At all costs."

The informant hesitated.

"But… sir, she left willingly."

Rayan's eyes flashed.

"She left because I told her to. And now it's my responsibility to make sure she lives long enough to regret walking away."

He turned, stepping toward the edge of the rooftop, letting the wind whip through his dark hair.

"Danger doesn't end just because she ran," he muttered to himself.

His mind was a storm of calculation and emotion—a dangerous combination.

For a brief second, he allowed himself to remember her smile, the way her hand fit in his, the warmth that had no right existing in his frozen world.

And then he crushed the thought.

There was no room for softness. No room for mistakes.

Yet…

The truth was unavoidable.

He cared.

More than he should.

More than he wanted.

He clenched his fists.

"I'll bring her back," he whispered into the night.

"No matter what it takes. And if they think they can touch her… they'll learn the cost of crossing me."

Rayan's phone buzzed. A single text:

"You can run… but you can't hide. —A"

He smirked bitterly.

She was trying.

But she didn't understand.

She was already part of his world—whether she wanted it or not.

He turned back toward the city, eyes scanning the shadows.

Tonight, he would wait.

Tomorrow, he would move.

Because in this life, in this game, the line between survival and destruction was razor-thin.

And he would cross it—again and again—if it meant keeping her alive.

Rayan clenched his jaw and whispered softly:

"I promised I'd protect you… and I always keep my promises."
