Chapter 39 - Chapter 38: “Movie Night… and Hurt”

Friday night. The apartment was dimly lit, the glow of the TV casting soft shadows on our faces. Ethan and I were sprawled on the sofa under a blanket, a stack of snacks between us, ready for a movie marathon.

"This one's a rom-com," I said, tossing him a bag of popcorn. "You're gonna love it."

"I don't know…" he teased, catching a kernel mid-air. "Rom-coms aren't really my thing."

"Excuses," I laughed, nudging him gently. "You love cheesy stuff like this. Admit it."

"Maybe," he smirked, leaning back. "But only because I have the best company."

My heart fluttered, and I blushed. "Ethan…" I whispered softly, but before I could finish, the movie started.

We watched, laughed at the silly moments, and stole occasional glances at each other. When a romantic scene played, he nudged me, "See? Cute, right?"

"Yeah… cute," I agreed, leaning slightly closer.

Halfway through, I reached for the popcorn, accidentally brushing my hand against his. He looked at me, his expression strange—something I hadn't seen before.

"Lara… why didn't you tell me earlier?" he asked suddenly, voice tight.

"Tell you… what?" I asked, confused.

"You… about… him," he said, eyes avoiding mine. My stomach dropped.

"What? Ethan, what are you talking about?" I asked, alarmed, feeling the warmth drain from my cheeks.

He let out a frustrated sigh, running a hand through his hair. "I saw the message… from Mark. Lara, are you still… involved? Are you thinking about him?"

My heart raced, hurt flashing through me. "Ethan… no! That was just a message about… work! I didn't even reply. It meant nothing!"

His jaw tightened. "It didn't matter… I saw it. And I… I don't know if I can… trust this. After everything, Lara… I can't help but feel like maybe you're not fully… mine."

Tears welled up in my eyes, and my voice shook. "Ethan! Are you serious? You think I'd… I'd still want him? You don't even know the context!"

"I… I don't know," he admitted, frustration mixing with vulnerability. "I just… felt hurt. Seeing it… it stung."

I reached for his hand, my own trembling. "Ethan… I swear. It's only you. Only ever you. You have to believe me."

He looked away, jaw tight, his arm tensing. "I… I want to, Lara. I really do. But tonight… it's hard. I don't know if I can just… ignore it."

My chest ached. Hurt, confusion, and fear mingled in a painful swirl. The cozy, playful movie night had shifted in seconds—leaving us both silent, the distance between us suddenly bigger than the sofa could hold.

The screen flickered, but I didn't care about the movie anymore. Ethan's shoulders were tense, eyes distant, and for the first time, I felt truly… scared.

Because love wasn't just laughter, cuddles, and stolen kisses. Sometimes, it hurt. And tonight… I realized that even the closest hearts could falter.
