Chapter 43 - Chapter 42: “Vulnerable Night”

Saturday night. The city outside was quiet, a soft drizzle still pattering against the windows. Back at the apartment, the events of the hospital had left us both exhausted, emotionally drained, yet oddly closer than ever.

I sank onto the sofa, pulling the blanket around me, trying to calm the residual anxiety still gripping my chest. Ethan sat beside me, his fingers brushing mine intermittently, giving me small, steadying reassurances.

"I still can't believe it," I whispered, voice trembling. "One moment everything was fine, and then… my dad…"

Ethan pulled me into a tight hug, pressing my head against his chest. "I know, Lara… I know. It's scary. But you faced it. You were brave. And I'm so proud of you."

"Brave?" I asked softly, glancing up at him. "I felt like I was falling apart."

"You don't have to hide that with me," he murmured. "I want you to be real with me. Cry, scream, panic… whatever it is. I'll hold you through it all."

Tears pricked my eyes, and before I could stop them, they spilled freely. Ethan's arms tightened around me, his chest a steady anchor as I let all the tension of the day melt into his embrace.

"I'm scared sometimes," I admitted between sobs. "Scared of losing people… scared of not being enough… scared that everything I care about might just… break."

Ethan tilted my chin up gently, brushing away a stray tear. "Hey… look at me, Lara. You are enough. You've always been enough. And as for losing… you'll never lose me. Not while I breathe."

I swallowed hard, heart aching with the intensity of his words. "You mean that?"

"Every word," he whispered, leaning down to kiss my forehead softly. "I'm here. Always. And tonight, we'll just… hold each other. No words, no worries. Just us."

We curled up together on the sofa, our bodies entwined, letting the quiet intimacy of the apartment and the city rain wrap around us. I could feel his heartbeat against mine, steady and calming, and slowly, the panic and fear ebbed into something warmer: safety, trust, and love.

"I've never… felt like this before," I murmured, my face buried in his chest. "So safe… even when everything else is falling apart."

"You deserve that feeling," he said softly, stroking my hair. "And I'll do whatever it takes to give it to you… as long as we have each other."

Minutes passed, and the world outside seemed to disappear. All that mattered was the warmth of Ethan's arms, the quiet rhythm of our breathing, and the unspoken promises held in every gentle touch.

"Promise me…" I whispered, voice barely audible. "Promise we'll always be honest… even in fear, even in pain."

"I promise," he replied, voice steady and sure. "No secrets. No pretending. Always you and me, Lara."

And for the first time since the chaos of the day, I felt completely safe. Vulnerable, yes… but loved, cherished, and infinitely stronger than I had realized.

Because love wasn't just about happiness or comfort—it was about holding each other through the storms, and knowing that, together, we could survive anything.
