Chapter 41 - Chapter 40: “Date Night… and a Twist”

Saturday evening. The city was alive with lights and the soft hum of traffic. Ethan held my hand as we walked down the streets, our fingers interlaced. After yesterday's misunderstanding, this date felt like a fresh start—something tender, playful, and full of hope.

"I can't believe you actually let me pick the restaurant," I teased, nudging him lightly. "I expected something fancy and intimidating."

He chuckled, leaning down to whisper in my ear. "I wanted you to relax… and honestly, I wanted to see that cute, flustered smile all night."

I laughed, cheeks heating at his words. "You're impossible."

"And yet," he said softly, brushing a strand of hair behind my ear, "you like it."

The restaurant was cozy, lights dimmed, candles flickering. We sat across from each other, sipping wine and stealing glances whenever the other wasn't looking. Conversation flowed easily—laughs, teasing, gentle touches.

At one point, Ethan reached across the table, holding my hand tightly. "Lara… I'm glad we're here. I'm glad… it's just us again."

"Me too," I said, heart fluttering. "I feel… safe. Happy."

After dinner, we walked along the riverside, the moon reflecting on the water. The air was cool, soft, and romantic. Ethan suddenly pulled me close, arms around my waist, forehead resting against mine. "Lara… I don't ever want to fight like before again. I just… I want us to be happy."

"I want that too," I whispered, pressing my lips softly to his. "I love you, Ethan. And I don't care how scary it feels sometimes."

He smiled, pulling me into a long hug. "I love you too, Lara. Always."

Just as we were about to continue our walk, my phone buzzed. I pulled it out, frowning at the message preview.

"We need to talk. It's about your dad. – R"

I froze, heart skipping a beat. "Ethan… it's… my dad. Something's wrong."

He immediately noticed my expression. "Lara? What's wrong?"

I shook my head, swallowing hard. "I… I don't know. But it sounds serious. I need to call him now."

Ethan's hand tightened around mine. "Go ahead. I'll be right here."

As I dialed, my heart pounded—not from romance this time, but fear. The twist hit me like a cold wave. Just when everything felt perfect… life had thrown in a complication I hadn't expected.

Ethan squeezed my hand, concern clear in his eyes. "Whatever it is, Lara… we'll face it together. Promise."

I nodded, but my chest ached. This night, our first real romantic date after reconciling, had suddenly shifted. Love was still there—strong, real—but the world had reminded me that nothing came easy, and even happiness could be interrupted by unexpected news.

I exhaled shakily, glancing at Ethan. "I just… I hope it's not as bad as it sounds."

He pulled me closer again. "We'll find out… together."

And as the river reflected the city lights, I realized: love could be tender, playful, and magical… but it could also be tested in ways you never saw coming.
