Chapter 36 - Chapter 35: “Late-Night Secrets”

Tuesday night. The apartment was quiet, the city lights casting soft glows through the windows. Ethan and I were curled up on the sofa, a blanket draped over both of us, the warmth of our bodies mingling as we sipped hot chocolate. The playful chaos of the day had settled, replaced by a calm intimacy I hadn't realized I craved.

"Lara…" Ethan whispered, his voice low, almost hesitant. "Can I ask you something?"

"Sure," I replied softly, leaning into him. "What is it?"

He hesitated, running a hand through his hair. "I… I want to know… what scares you. About us. About this… contract thing, or anything else."

I swallowed, the honesty making my chest tight. "Scares me?" I murmured, thinking carefully. "I guess… that I'll get too attached. That I'll feel too much, and then… what if it all goes wrong? What if… you leave?"

His hand cupped my cheek gently, thumb brushing over my skin. "Lara… I'm not going anywhere. I promise. And I get scared too… scared of losing you, scared of letting myself feel this deeply. But… I want it. I want you. All of you."

My heart fluttered, tears pricking my eyes, not from sadness but from the weight of his words. "Ethan… I want that too. I want us… even if it's scary."

He smiled softly, pressing a kiss to my temple. "It's okay to be scared. It's okay to feel… everything. Because that means it's real. And we're in this together. Step by step."

I rested my head on his chest, listening to the steady beat of his heart. "I've never… trusted anyone like this before," I admitted quietly. "Not like this, with my heart."

"You can trust me," he whispered, fingers tracing lazy patterns on my arm. "And I… I trust you. More than I ever thought I could."

For a long moment, we just sat there, letting the silence wrap around us like a cocoon. The city hummed softly outside, but in our apartment, there was only warmth, safety, and the kind of intimacy that went beyond physical touches—it was emotional, deep, and grounding.

"I… feel like… I can tell you anything," I murmured, lifting my head to look at him. "Even the things I usually hide."

Ethan smiled, eyes soft. "Good. Because I want to know everything about you, Lara. Your fears, your dreams… everything. And I'll share mine too. No secrets, no pretending."

I nodded, feeling a sense of peace wash over me. "Then… promise me something?"

"Anything," he said, leaning closer.

"Promise we'll always be honest… even when it's hard. Even when it scares us."

He took my hands in his, holding them tightly. "I promise. Always."

And in the quiet of the night, wrapped in each other's arms, sharing fears and secrets, I realized something: love wasn't just about kisses or touches. It was about trust, vulnerability, and being brave enough to let someone see every part of you… and letting them stay.

Tonight, we had taken that step. And somehow… I knew it was just the beginning.
