Chapter 1 - CHAPTER 1: The thing inside kael

The night was too quiet and Kael Draven hated it because silence always made it easier for the feeling to crawl back up from wherever it hid inside him.

‎He walked alone through the narrow street with his hands buried deep in his pockets and his head slightly lowered not out of fear but out of habit because people had learned not to look at him for too long and he had learned not to give them a reason to.

‎The streetlights flickered once then steadied casting long shadows that stretched unnaturally across the cracked pavement and for a brief second Kael paused because something about the shadow at his feet felt wrong like it wasn't fully attached to him.

‎He exhaled slowly and continued walking telling himself it was nothing but the lie felt thin tonight.

‎It had been getting worse.

‎The dreams the whispers the sudden flashes of violence that didn't feel like imagination anymore but memory.

‎Kael clenched his jaw as a sharp pulse ran through his chest making his steps falter for just a moment before he forced himself forward again because stopping meant feeling and feeling meant losing control.

‎A distant sound broke through the silence.

‎Footsteps. Not his. Kael didn't turn immediately instead he listened carefully counting the rhythm and spacing and weight because whoever was behind him was not trying to hide. Three people. Maybe four.

‎He finally stopped and lifted his head slightly his eyes darkening as the presence behind him closed in.

‎"You picked the wrong street tonight" a voice called out rough and confident carrying the kind of arrogance that came from numbers.

‎Kael turned slowly his expression calm but his eyes sharp as he faced them.

‎Four men just like he expected standing loosely spread out like they had done this before like this was routine.

‎One of them stepped forward cracking his knuckles with a smirk that didn't reach his eyes.

‎"You got something we want" the man said.

‎Kael stared at him for a second then glanced briefly at the others before speaking in a low steady tone "You're wasting your time."

‎The smirk faded slightly replaced by irritation and that was all it took.

‎The first punch came fast aimed straight for Kael's face but Kael moved before it landed his body reacting without thought as he stepped aside and drove his elbow into the attacker's ribs with a force that made a sharp crack echo into the night.

‎The man collapsed instantly gasping for air.

‎The others didn't hesitate they rushed him all at once but something inside Kael snapped the moment they got close.

‎It wasn't anger. It was something deeper. Something hungry.

‎Time seemed to slow as Kael's senses sharpened unnaturally he could hear their breathing their heartbeats the shift of their muscles before they even moved and it felt wrong because he knew he shouldn't be able to.

‎One came from the left Kael caught his wrist twisted it too far too fast and the sound of bone breaking followed immediately by a scream that cut short when Kael shoved him aside.

‎Another swung wildly Kael ducked under it and drove his fist into the man's stomach but he didn't stop there his hand lingered for a fraction too long his fingers curling slightly like he wanted to tear something out.

‎He froze..Just for a second. And that second was enough.

‎A fist slammed into the side of his head snapping it to the side and sending him stumbling back as a metallic taste filled his mouth. Silence fell again. But this time it wasn't empty. It was watching.

‎Kael straightened slowly his breathing uneven as his vision blurred for a split second before snapping back into focus sharper than before almost too sharp.

‎The world looked different. Darker. Clearer.

‎Alive in a way it had never been.

‎The last man standing hesitated now the confidence gone replaced by something else something closer to fear.

‎"What… what are you" he muttered stepping back.

‎Kael didn't answer because he didn't know.

‎But something inside him did. And it liked this.

‎A low sound escaped his throat not quite a growl not quite human and that was when he realized his hands were shaking not from fear but from the effort of holding back.

‎Holding what back. He didn't know.

‎And that terrified him more than anything. The man turned and ran. Kael didn't chase.

‎He just stood there in the middle of the street his chest rising and falling slowly as the feeling inside him receded inch by inch slipping back into whatever dark place it came from leaving behind only the echo of its presence. The silence returned. But it wasn't empty anymore.

‎It was waiting. Kael wiped the blood from his lip and started walking again like nothing had happened but deep down he knew something had changed tonight because whatever was inside him was no longer sleeping. It was waking up.

‎...

‎Somewhere Beyond Gravehold City

‎Deep within the Black Forest where no light dared to stay for long the air itself felt heavy as if the ground remembered every drop of blood that had ever been spilled upon it.

‎A figure stood motionless among the trees cloaked in darkness his presence blending so perfectly with the night that only his eyes gave him away.

‎They glowed faintly. Cold. Knowing.

‎He tilted his head slightly as if listening to something far away something most would never hear.

‎Then slowly a faint smile touched his lips.

‎"So it begins" the man murmured his voice low and almost amused as the wind stirred around him carrying a scent that had not been felt in years.

‎"Kael Draven…"

‎The name lingered in the air like a promise. Or a warning.
