Chapter 2 - CHAPTER 2: Eyes that shouldn't see

Kael Draven did not sleep that night because every time he closed his eyes he could still feel it moving beneath his skin like something alive pressing against the limits of his body waiting for the moment he stopped resisting.

‎He sat by the edge of his bed staring at nothing while the faint light of dawn slowly crept through the cracked window casting pale lines across the floor and for the first time in a long time he felt something unfamiliar settle in his chest.

‎Unease. Not fear. Something worse.

‎Because fear meant you understood the danger but this was different this was the kind of feeling that came when you realized you didn't even know what you were becoming.

‎A sharp ringing broke through the silence. His phone.

‎Kael glanced at it without much interest before finally reaching over and answering.

‎"Where are you" the voice on the other end said immediately impatient and sharp. Kael exhaled softly "Home."

"You're late."

‎"I know."

‎A pause followed then a quieter tone "You don't sound right."

‎Kael didn't respond because there was nothing to say that wouldn't sound like madness.

‎"I'll be there soon" he said before ending the call without waiting for a reply.

‎He stood slowly his body stiff from the tension he hadn't released all night and as he moved toward the mirror his reflection caught his attention immediately.

‎Something was wrong.

‎Kael stepped closer his eyes narrowing slightly as he stared at himself because for just a moment his eyes didn't look like his own.

‎They looked darker. Deeper.

Like something was looking back at him from behind them.

‎He blinked and it was gone. But the feeling remained.

He grabbed his jacket and left without another thought because staying any longer meant thinking and thinking meant remembering and remembering meant losing control again.

‎The streets of Gravehold City were already alive when Kael stepped outside but the noise didn't bother him the way it usually did because everything felt distant today like he was slightly out of sync with the world around him.

‎He walked past people without really seeing them until suddenly he did.

‎A man across the street turned his head slightly and for a brief second Kael heard it.

‎A heartbeat. Clear. Loud. Too loud. Kael stopped.

‎The man kept walking unaware.

‎Kael's jaw tightened as more sounds flooded in footsteps breathing whispers voices overlapping in a chaotic rush that made his head throb as if his senses were stretching far beyond what they should.

‎He forced himself to move again pushing through it step by step until the noise dulled just enough for him to function but it didn't disappear completely.

‎It stayed. Lingering. Watching.

‎By the time he reached the school gates his expression had settled back into its usual calm but inside nothing was calm anymore.

‎Students moved around him laughing talking living their normal lives while Kael walked through it like a ghost unnoticed but not entirely unseen.

‎Because someone was watching him.

‎He felt it immediately. Sharp. Focused. Intentional.

Kael slowed slightly his eyes shifting just enough to scan the area without drawing attention and that was when he saw her.

‎Nyra Voss.

‎Standing near the far end of the courtyard leaning casually against the railing like she had nowhere else to be yet her eyes were fixed directly on him.

‎She didn't look away when he noticed.

‎Most people did. She didn't.

That alone made something in Kael tighten.

‎There was nothing openly threatening about her stance but there was something controlled about it something deliberate like every movement every breath was measured.

‎Not normal. Not human.

Kael held her gaze for a second longer than necessary then turned and continued walking as if she didn't exist but his awareness of her didn't fade. It sharpened.

Because even as he walked away he could still feel her eyes on him.

‎Tracking him. Studying him. And for reasons he couldn't explain his instincts didn't tell him to ignore her.

‎They told him to be careful. Very careful.

‎...

Edge of the Black Forest

‎The wind moved slowly through the towering trees carrying with it the faint scent of something that had not existed in this world for a very long time.

‎The same figure from the night before stood in silence his gaze fixed on the distant horizon though his attention was clearly elsewhere.

‎Behind him another presence emerged stepping out from the shadows with quiet precision before stopping at a respectful distance.

‎"She's found him" the newcomer said his voice low and steady.

‎The man's lips curved slightly "Of course she has Nyra Voss was trained for this."

‎"And if she fails."

‎A brief pause followed before the man finally turned his glowing eyes reflecting something ancient and merciless.

‎"She won't."

‎The answer was calm certain and absolute.

‎"Because if she does" he continued softly "then Kael Draven will awaken without control."

‎Silence fell heavy between them.

‎"And when that happens" the man added his voice dropping just enough to send a chill through the air itself "there will be nothing left to control at all."

‎The wind picked up slightly as if reacting to his words whispering through the forest like a warning that no one would hear until it was too late.
