Laura sat by the window, she looked devoid of the activities going on in Mrs Katerina's house.
"Laura " she heard her name called from behind.
"Why does the birthday girl look so down" she asked sitting beside me. She noticed the tears hanging in my eyes as I turned to face her.
"What is it . . hmm thinking about your parents again" she asked me with a knowing expression.
"Hmm . . don't you think it's weird that as the princess, I'm not even recognized by my parents" I asked hurt.
"What make you think your parents don't recognize you?" she asked.
"I meant aunt Katerina its not like I don't like living with you but as a princess, as (the) princess, I should be living at the palace, going for balls and galas, I should accompany my parents on world tours and castle visit, don't I have that much right as a princess?" I asked tears welling up in my eyes.
"Don't cry dear, I understand what you are trying to say, but you have to understand that royalty isn't always the way it is shown in movie, balls, tours, galas, yes these are all right of a princess but they come with dangers too. Royalty come with lots of enemies and lots of risks. Your parents are only trying to sheid you from these dangers. So pls don't let this ruin your big day. Cheer up and come downstairs, it's already 7PM the guest are waiting", she patted my cheeks and left the room.
She always knows the right things to say, I really love her, she's the mother I never had.
My parents gave me to her at birth for my protection, or so i was told. My parents never visited. I only saw them at royal gathering, and we only exchange little pleasantries. I had mustered up the courage to invite them to my birthday again this year like I did every year. They had never shows up for any both I still kept trying.
I walked to the left side of the room where my purple ball gown was hung. It was designed by madam Katerina specially for these day and it was beautiful.
I got in into the surprisingly comfortable gown and walked downstairs.
To my almost surprise the king and queen where there standing with aunt Katerina. I almost felt my eyes were deceiving me.
I walked up to them nervously holding aunt Katerina's hand, she gave me a light squeeze calming my nerves.
"Good day your Majesties" I greeted them bowing slightly.
"Good day laura" the Queen said and the king simply nodded.
"Hmm . . its time for the cutting of the cake" aunt Katerina waled me to where the fave layered beautiful cake was standing.
I resolved in my heart to talk to my parents, I wanted to pour my heart to them, to tell them that I wanted to be closer to but something in me wasn't right, It didn't feel right, I had a strong feeling that this night would end as a disaster.
Aunt Katerina and the others aside the Queen and king sang as i cut the cake.
Then it happened.
I heard a loud sound in my ear that hurt my ear drum. It was like a bell being rung in my ear, I dropped the knife, held both hand to my ear and screamed in pain.
I couldn't hear the commotion going on around my but I could fell hand patting me and some drifting away.
Then it stopped. I felt my eyes burning and quickly opened it. I turned to aunt Katerina and she jolted back.
"Lau . . laura" she said in a frightened tone.
"What . . what's going on?" I asked trying to move closer to aunt Katerina.
She didn't step away but the way she and the rest in the party looked at me, I was sure something wasn't right.
"Aunt, I don't know what happened, I'm sorry for screaming like that. I heard a very loud sounded in my ear," I said almost crying.
I looked around but couldn't find the king and queen.
After about a minutes of silence between us, aunt Katerina finally walked up to me touching my face.
"I knew you had it in you" she smiled proudly.
"What going on aunt " I cried into her palm.
"I don't know dear, but I know that you are a special child that's why I was moved to save you all these years" she said smiling proudly.
"Quickly . . sieze her" the king said marching in with a small group of army.
They walked up to me and madam Katerina stood in front trying to sheid me.
"What is the meaning of this Roland" she roared at the king.
The guard pushed aunt Katerina to the ground dragging me forcibly.
"She is a threat to our people, she has always been a threat to our people so tomorrow at the full moon she would be executed" the king announced and the people shouted in agreement.
My head was spinning in confusion as I was dragged away.
I turned back looking at my aunt who was on her knees, begging the king.
I can't believe this are the parents I had long to live by their side, they hated me, even from birth, then why did they give birth to me, why.
Anger suddenly rushed to my blood, a sudden force, a power not belonging to me but was in my control overshadowed me. Just a small push and the guard were sent tumbling into the crowd.
I turned back, wanting to go fight the king but I just couldn't, the whole kingdom was against me, how could I even fight them with a newly discovered power.
I ran and ran not looking back. I finally stopped to catch my breath when I was a long distance away from the scene.
I wanted to leave, leave this kingdom, leave this wretched people but not without seeing aunt Katerina.
I waited at the dump crying my eyes out till I was sure no one should be in aunt katherine's house.
I observed from a distance, the house was quite, all the lights off and windows closed except that of my room. I tiptoed toward the window and saw aunt Katerina holding a strange book in her hand, sitting at my desk.
She had obviously been crying since her eyes were red and swollen.
I climbed in. "Aunt . ." I said trying to hold back my tears.
She looked at me for a while with eyes of disbelief then she burst into tears.
"Are you okay, did they find you?" she asked.
"Aunt, what is going on, what am i, why does everyone hate me?" I asked letting my tears flow freely.
"There is no time for this" she gave me a purse and a book.
"This should sustain you for a while, laura listen to me, this place isn't safe for you. Go . . go far away from here and when you are lost, when you need answer, consult this book, make sure to keep it safe. It is no ordinary book, it's enchanted, now go" she shuved me to the window and we both waved each other good bye in tears.
