Chapter 13 - The breakout begins

Dusk arrived under a blood-red sky choked with smoke from distant fires. Neo-Horizon City burned in patches, its once-gleaming arcologies now jagged silhouettes against the horizon. The academy's outer walls groaned under the pressure of the gathering horde, hundreds of infected pressing against the barriers, their moans merging into a constant, horrifying chorus.

Captain Reyes stood at the front of the assembled survivors, her voice steady despite the exhaustion etched on her face. "We move in five minutes. East loading docks route. Stay tight, stay quiet until we have to fight. Primary goal: reach the old military checkpoint three kilometers out. If we get separated, rally there. No heroics. No stopping for the fallen unless they're still human."

Sixty-three people, all that remained, shouldered their packs. Ted adjusted his own, feeling the reassuring weight of extra nutrient bars and his trusted metal pipe strapped to the side. His stats had climbed quietly: Strength 17, Agility 16, Vitality 17. The enhancements made carrying the load feel trivial, but he hunched slightly to sell the image of an ordinary survivor.

Marcus positioned his crew near the front, bat already in hand. He shot Ted one final glare. "Stay where I can see you, Harlan. If you slow us down or act weird, I'll leave you for the dead myself."

Elena fell in beside Ted toward the middle of the column. "Stick close," she murmured. "Something feels off about this timing. The horde seems… coordinated."

Ted nodded, his upgraded Zombie Sense already painting a grim picture: dozens of cold signatures massing beyond the doors, with several stronger mutated pulses mixed in. The daily quest had reset again, but he pushed the notification aside for now. Survival came first.

The heavy shelter doors hissed open. Fresh air, thick with rot and ash, rushed in. The team moved out in a disciplined rush, weapons ready.

The academy's upper corridors were a nightmare of overturned furniture, dried blood, and scattered bodies. Gunfire cracked as the lead group cleared a path through a cluster of shamblers blocking the way to the loading docks. Marcus swung viciously, enhanced muscles making each blow devastating.

Ted stayed protective of Elena's flank, taking down two infected that lunged from a side hallway. His strikes were precise and powerful, the pipe caving skulls with minimal effort.

He absorbed quickly during the chaos, the cold energy steadying his nerves.

The group reached the loading docks faster than expected. Massive bay doors stood half-raised, revealing the ruined street beyond. Abandoned hover-trucks and civilian vehicles littered the road, some still smoldering. The horde was visible now, a sea of gray flesh and milky eyes stretching down the main avenue, drawn toward the noise.

"Move!" Reyes shouted. "Run for the checkpoint!"

The breakout turned into a desperate sprint. Survivors poured out, feet pounding pavement. Infected turned en masse, moans rising into excited howls.

Chaos erupted.

A wave of twenty shamblers crashed into the middle of the column. Ted found himself fighting back-to-back with Elena. She fired methodically, dropping targets with headshots. Ted used his superior strength and agility to smash through three in rapid succession, clearing space.

One mutated variant, the clawed type, leaped at Elena from atop a wrecked car. Ted reacted instantly, tackling it mid-air with his boosted power. They crashed to the ground. His enhanced regeneration absorbed the impact as he drove the pipe through its eye socket.

Elena helped him up, breathing hard. "That was fast. Too fast, Ted."

"No time!" he replied, pulling her forward with the group.

They ran, the column stretching and thinning as slower survivors fell behind. Marcus's group carved a brutal path ahead, but one of his friends was dragged down by multiple infected, screams cut short.

Ted's Zombie Sense warned of more threats closing in from side streets, smarter variants directing lesser ones. The virus was evolving faster than anyone realized.

A new System notification flashed urgently:

*[Main Quest Branch: Shelter Evacuation – Progress: Escaping Academy (Complete). Reach military checkpoint alive.]*

*[Reward upon success: Level 2 Unlock + Major Essence Bonus.]*

*[Hidden Condition: Minimize human casualties while harvesting discreetly for bonus.]*

The checkpoint loomed in the distance, a fortified barricade with razor wire and abandoned military vehicles. But between them and safety lay a wide intersection packed with at least fifty infected, including two bulky armored mutants leading the pack.

Captain Reyes signaled a desperate stand. "Hold here! Fire at will!"

Gunfire and melee erupted. Ted fought fiercely, his stats giving him an edge that was becoming harder to hide. He dispatched another four infected in quick succession, absorbing essence between dodges and strikes.

His total climbed past 300. The hunger felt manageable thanks to the recent feeds, but the thrill of growth was undeniable.

Elena stayed glued to his side, her pistol clicking empty at the worst moment. A shambler lunged at her. Ted intercepted, crushing it with a powerful overhead blow that sent bone fragments flying.

She stared at him, eyes wide. "Ted… how are you doing this?"

Before he could answer, one of the armored mutants charged the group. Marcus met it head-on, but the creature overpowered him, slamming the bully into a car with a crunch.

Ted saw the opening and the risk. If he helped too obviously, questions would explode. But letting Marcus die might fracture the group further.

He charged in, using agility to flank the mutant and strike its legs repeatedly. The creature staggered. Marcus recovered enough to deliver the finishing blow, breathing ragged.

"You…" Marcus gasped, wiping blood from his mouth, suspicion burning hotter than ever. "You saved me? Or were you just showing off?"

The intersection fight intensified. Survivors pushed forward desperately, some falling to bites and claws. Ted continued harvesting discreetly, his power growing with every kill.

As the last few broke through toward the checkpoint, a final System message appeared:

*[Progress to Level 2: 45%. Significant harvest completed.]*

They reached the barricade, slamming makeshift gates shut behind the last survivors. Only forty-eight remained.

Panting, bloodied, but alive.

Elena leaned against a wall, staring at Ted with a mixture of gratitude and deepening unease. "We need to talk. Soon."

Marcus, nursing new bruises, watched from across the checkpoint with narrowed eyes.

Ted wiped his pipe clean, the Necro System humming with potential in his mind.

The academy was behind them.

The ruined city stretched ahead, full of unknown dangers, new opportunities, and the constant need to hide what he was becoming.

The real journey had just started.
