Chapter 16 - Gates of the hub

The Central Military Hub rose like a steel island amid the sea of ruins. Tall concrete walls topped with automated turrets and razor wire encircled a cluster of fortified buildings that had once served as a command center for the city's defense forces. Searchlights swept the perimeter even in daylight, and the faint crackle of radio chatter drifted over the barriers. Human activity, real, organized human activity was visible on the watchtowers.

The forty-eight survivors approached cautiously, weapons lowered but ready. Captain Reyes raised a white cloth on a pipe as a makeshift flag of truce. "We're survivors from Horizon Central Academy! Requesting entry and medical aid!"

A voice boomed from the walls via loudspeaker. "Stop fifty meters out. Identify yourselves and submit to quarantine scan. Any signs of infection and we open fire."

The group halted. Tension rippled through the ranks. Marcus muttered something to his crew, eyes flicking toward Ted. Elena stayed close, her hand resting near her pistol.

Ted's Zombie Sense picked up no immediate infected threats nearby, but the walls themselves felt… watchful. His new Level 2 status and Minor Flesh Crafting skill gave him confidence, he could activate it mentally to refine his disguise if needed. The stat boosts made him feel more capable than ever, yet the hunger baseline from Enhanced Regeneration I reminded him he couldn't slack on feeding.

A squad of soldiers in heavy tactical gear and full-face visors emerged from a side gate, scanners in hand. They moved with professional efficiency, checking each survivor for bites, fever, and viral markers using portable devices similar to the one Dr. Patel had used earlier.

When they reached Ted, the lead soldier waved the scanner over him. The device beeped neutrally. "Clear. Elevated vitals, but consistent with combat stress. Move inside for full processing."

Ted exhaled inwardly. The combination of masks and his controlled regeneration had held. The System chimed privately:

*[Quarantine Scan Passed. Minor Flesh Crafting ready if needed. +5 Necro Essence for successful deception.]*

Inside the hub, the atmosphere was starkly different from the academy shelter. Rows of tents housed hundreds of survivors. Armed patrols moved with purpose. A central command building flew a faded flag of the United Global Defense Initiative. Medical tents, armories, and communal kitchens operated under strict rationing.

Captain Reyes was pulled aside for debriefing with the hub's commander, a stern woman named Colonel Voss (no relation to Elena, but the shared surname earned a raised eyebrow). The rest of the group was directed to a quarantine wing for 24-hour observation.

As they settled into assigned bunks, whispers spread quickly. The hub had its own hierarchy: military personnel at the top, awakened civilians with useful abilities in the middle, and ordinary survivors doing labor tasks below. Rumors spoke of "special containment" for anyone showing anomalous traits and experiments on captured mutated zombies.

Elena found Ted in a quiet corner of the quarantine area. "This place feels more like a prison than a safe zone. They're scanning everyone twice. If they dig deeper…"

"I know," Ted replied softly. "I'll be careful. The new… changes are helping me blend better." He didn't mention the Flesh Crafting skill, but he activated it briefly in his mind to ensure no subtle paleness showed under the bright lights.

The Ally Bond buff made their conversation feel easier, a faint sense of mutual understanding. Elena nodded. "We watch each other. If things go south, we find a way out together."

Marcus, assigned to a nearby bunk, overheard enough to scowl. Later, when Ted stepped out for assigned labor duty (helping unload supply crates), Marcus cornered him near the armory fence with two of his crew.

"You think you're safe here, Harlan? These military types will figure you out faster than we did. You're not normal. I saw how you fought on the streets. If you're some kind of carrier or experiment, they'll lock you up or dissect you."

Ted met his gaze steadily, his boosted strength making him stand taller without effort. "I'm just trying to survive, same as you, Marcus. Accusing me without proof almost got us all killed back at the academy. Do you really want to start that here?"

Marcus stepped closer, voice low and threatening. "Proof is coming. I'll make sure of it."

Before it could escalate, a hub officer interrupted, assigning Ted and a small team (including Elena) to a supply retrieval mission outside the walls, a short run to a nearby warehouse for canned goods. "Consider it your integration test. Bring back the haul, prove you're useful."

The mission offered the perfect cover.

Outside the hub walls, the streets were still dangerous but less congested than the earlier route. Ted's group of six moved carefully. When a small pack of six infected appeared, including one intelligent variant directing the others, Ted used the chaos to harvest discreetly while fighting visibly.

He dispatched three with powerful, precise strikes, absorbing the necro-energy between blows.

*[Necro Essence +10 +9 +13]*

The intelligent variant nearly exposed him when it focused on Ted's unusually efficient movements, but Elena's timely shots and the team's combined effort brought it down.

*[Daily Quest Progress: 3/3 completed during mission. Reward pending safe return.]*

Back at the hub with a successful haul, the System rewarded him fully:

*[Daily Quest Completed: +20 Necro Essence, +1 to Agility.]*

**Agility: 20**

With over 500 Essence and Level 2 unlocked, new Intermediate Shop options appeared:

- Flesh Crafting Upgrade (150 Essence): Extend disguise duration and allow minor structural changes.

- Basic Horde Sense (80 Essence): Detect and weakly influence lesser zombies within range.

- Undead Resilience I (120 Essence): Further damage resistance.

Ted held off on spending, saving for something more impactful once he understood the hub's dangers better.

That evening, as the group shared a meager hot meal, Colonel Voss addressed the new arrivals via broadcast. "Welcome to the Hub. We fight for humanity's future here. But we have rules: full disclosure of any anomalies. Anyone hiding infection or unnatural abilities will face containment."

Marcus's eyes bored into Ted from across the hall.

Elena leaned closer to Ted. "We need a plan. This place might be safer from the dead… but not from the living."

Ted nodded, the Necro System's blue text glowing faintly in his vision with new potential.

He had reached Level 2.

He had allies.

But in this new fortress of fragile civilization, his greatest threat might no longer be the zombies outside, but the humans who feared what he was becoming.
