Chapter 15 - Streets of the fallen

Dawn broke gray and hazy over the ruined streets of Neo-Horizon City. Smoke still rose from distant districts where fires had burned unchecked for days. The military checkpoint offered only fragile shelter, its walls already showing signs of wear from previous skirmishes. The forty-eight survivors moved with grim purpose, packing the last of their supplies and checking weapons.

Ted adjusted the straps of his backpack, feeling the comforting weight. His enhanced strength made it negligible, but he kept his posture slightly hunched, matching the fatigue everyone else displayed. The Necro System remained a constant, silent presence in his mind.

Captain Reyes addressed the group one last time before departure. "We push toward the Central Military Hub. It's roughly eight kilometers through the commercial district. Expect heavy resistance. Mutated infected are leading packs now, they seem smarter. Stay in formation. Conserve ammo. Move!"

The column set out into the open streets. Abandoned cars, fallen drones, and scattered corpses created a maze of obstacles. The air carried the heavy stench of decay that even Ted's Scent Mask couldn't fully block from his own heightened senses.

Marcus took point with his crew, bat swinging ready. Elena stayed close to Ted in the middle, her pistol reloaded and eyes scanning rooftops and alleys. The new Ally Bond Buff gave Ted a faint awareness of her position and tension level, useful, but he still had to be careful not to reveal too much.

The first clash came within fifteen minutes. A pack of twenty infected surged from a collapsed storefront, mostly shamblers, but led by a fast variant with elongated legs that allowed it to leap between vehicles.

"Contact!" Marcus roared, charging in.

Gunfire cracked. Ted moved with the group, pipe in hand. He dispatched two shamblers that broke toward the flank, absorbing their essence in the brief chaos between strikes.

Progress: 2/3.

Elena fought beside him, her shots precise. When a shambler nearly grabbed her from behind, Ted intercepted with a powerful swing, his boosted strength sending the creature flying into a wall.

She gave him a quick nod of thanks, but her eyes lingered a second longer than necessary.

The fast variant leaped toward the rear of the column. Ted reacted on instinct, agility carrying him forward in a burst of speed. He met it mid-leap, slamming the pipe into its chest and driving it to the ground. One final strike ended it.

The surge felt good. Ted's total essence climbed to 380. Level 2 progress ticked up slightly from the quality kills.

The pack was cleared, but the noise had attracted more. Smaller groups trickled in from side streets as the survivors pressed forward.

Halfway through the commercial district, the real threat emerged.

A larger horde blocked the main avenue, nearly a hundred infected, organized in loose ranks. At the front stood three advanced mutants: one with armored plating and massive fists, another with acidic drool that sizzled on contact with the ground, and a third that moved with eerie intelligence, directing lesser zombies with guttural commands.

"Overlords…" one survivor whispered in horror. "They're coordinating now."

Captain Reyes cursed. "We can't go around without losing hours. Fight through! Aim for the leaders!"

The battle exploded into chaos. Marcus engaged the armored mutant head-on, his enhanced strength allowing him to trade blows. Elena provided covering fire. Ted wove through the edges, using the disorder to harvest discreetly while contributing visibly.

He took down four regular infected in quick succession, absorbing each one between dodges.

His movements grew smoother, more instinctive. The Ally Bond with Elena synced their timing, when she needed space to reload, he cleared her flank without a word.

But the intelligent mutant noticed the pattern. It pointed directly toward Ted's position and unleashed a wave of ten shamblers straight at him.

Ted fought harder, pipe a blur. One strike crushed a skull. Another sent a body tumbling. He absorbed rapidly, the cold energy flooding him.

*[Necro Essence +11 +9 +14]*

A notification he had been waiting for finally appeared as the last of that wave fell:

**Updated Status:**

**Host: Ted Harlan**

**Level: 2**

**Strength: 21**

**Agility: 19**

**Vitality: 21**

**Necro Essence: 492**

A rush of power surged through Ted's body. His senses sharpened further. The subtle paleness and faint decay urges became easier to suppress. He tested Minor Flesh Crafting mentally, it would help mask any future changes perfectly.

The fight turned in their favor. With the intelligent mutant distracted by Ted's sudden burst of efficiency, Marcus and the others brought down the armored leader. Elena dropped the acidic one with concentrated fire.

The horde broke, survivors pushing through the gap toward the distant military hub.

As they caught their breath in a cleared plaza, Elena pulled Ted aside briefly. "Leveling up in the middle of that? You just got stronger again, didn't you? I felt it somehow."

Ted hesitated, then gave a small, careful nod. "Something like that. It's keeping me... keeping us...alive."

She didn't press, but the trust in her eyes deepened. The Ally Bond buff strengthened slightly.

Marcus, wiping blood from his bat, watched the exchange from afar. His suspicion had turned into something colder, calculation.

The Central Military Hub was now visible in the distance: tall walls, watchtowers, and faint signs of human activity.

But between them and safety lay more streets, more dead, and the growing risk that Ted's secret wouldn't stay hidden much longer.

The Necro System chimed softly with new shop options now available at Level 2.

Ted Harlan was evolving.
