The shelter buzzed with urgent activity as night cycle gave way to another tense morning. Captain Reyes's announcement about the gathering horde had everyone on edge. Makeshift backpacks were being filled with rations, medical kits, spare ammunition, and anything useful that could be carried. The reinforced doors vibrated faintly from distant impacts, the dead testing the academy's outer defenses.
Ted worked alongside a small group sorting emergency packs near the main hall. His new Minor Strength Boost made lifting heavier crates feel effortless, but he deliberately slowed his movements and grunted occasionally to avoid standing out. Enhanced Regeneration I kept any minor strains from showing, but the slightly increased hunger baseline was already whispering at the edges of his mind.
*[Daily Quest: Feed the Hunger – Progress 0/3. Time until Frenzy risk: 22 hours.]*
He needed to slip away soon. With the evacuation looming, opportunities for discreet feeding might vanish once they moved into the open city.
Elena worked nearby, efficiently packing bandages and auto-injectors. She glanced at him a few times, her expression thoughtful. After the medical check had cleared him, some of the open suspicion had eased, but her curiosity clearly hadn't.
"You're handling the heavy lifting better than most," she said quietly when no one else was close. "Yesterday you looked exhausted. Today you're moving like it's nothing."
Ted shrugged, setting down a crate with controlled care. "Adrenaline and rest, I guess. Everyone's adapting."
She didn't push further, but the look in her eyes said she was filing away every odd detail. Trust was building, yet questions were piling up.
Marcus and his crew were on the far side, reinforcing the main stairwell barricades with welded scrap. Marcus kept shooting dark glances toward Ted, muttering to his friends. The bully's arm was healing slowly from the clawed mutant's gash, a normal human pace that highlighted Ted's own unnatural recovery even more.
Captain Reyes called another quick briefing midway through preparations.
"We'll attempt the breakout at dusk tomorrow if the horde doesn't breach first. Primary route: upper levels to the academy's east loading docks, then into the city streets toward the nearest military outpost. Secondary fallback: underground utility tunnels if the surface is too hot. Everyone carries their own pack. No one gets left behind unless they turn. Clear?"
Nods rippled through the group. Ted felt the weight of the main quest branch pressing on him.
*[Shelter Evacuation Branch Active. Prepare and survive breakout.]*
As the meeting broke, Ted volunteered for a final inventory check near the utility access tunnel, the same one he had used before. It was a calculated risk, but with everyone busy, it gave him a narrow window.
He slipped through the sealed door quietly, pipe in hand. The tunnel beyond was dim and still carried the faint stench of old blood. His upgraded Zombie Sense immediately lit up: four infected signatures scattered ahead, three standard shamblers and one slow-moving mutated variant with bloated, acidic-looking sores.
Perfect for a quick harvest.
Ted moved with practiced stealth, enhanced agility letting him close distances silently. He dispatched the first two shamblers with efficient strikes to the head, absorbing the cold necro-energy in the shadows.

*[Necro Essence +7]*
Progress: 2/3.
The mutated one proved trickier, it spat a glob of corrosive fluid that ate into the concrete near his feet. Ted dodged with newfound speed, circled behind, and crushed its skull. The surge from absorbing it felt richer, almost tainted.
*[Necro Essence +12]*

Ted felt lighter on his feet instantly. With 251 Essence, the shop options were expanding in appeal. He quickly spent another 40 on a second Minor Strength Boost while still alone.
*[Minor Strength Boost purchased. +2 Strength. Remaining Essence: 211.]*

Power was accumulating, but so was the need for caution. His body felt noticeably stronger and faster now, changes he'd have to mask even more carefully during the breakout.
As he turned to head back, footsteps echoed from the shelter side of the tunnel door.
Ted froze. The override panel clicked open, and Elena slipped through, pistol drawn low.
"Ted?" she whispered sharply, flashlight beam sweeping. "I saw you head this way. What are you doing out here alone again? We're supposed to stay in pairs for prep work."
Her light caught the fresh corpses behind him. She tensed, pistol rising slightly. "You cleared these… by yourself? Again?"
Ted raised his hands slowly, mind racing for a believable story. "I heard noises during inventory. Didn't want to raise a false alarm if it was nothing. Took care of them quietly so the others could keep working."
Elena lowered the pistol but didn't relax. She stepped closer, eyes scanning him from head to toe. "You're different, Ted. Stronger. Faster. You heal too quick. And you keep sneaking off like this. If it's not the virus… then what is it? Some hidden implant? A secret ability you never reported at the academy?"
The air grew thick. Ted could feel the System's subtle hunger baseline nudging him, but he pushed it down. Attacking or fleeing wasn't an option, not with Elena.
Before he could answer, a loud crash echoed from deeper in the tunnels, more infected drawn by the noise, or perhaps the horde outside pressing harder.
Elena spun toward the sound. "We need to get back and report this. Now."
Ted nodded, falling in step beside her as they retreated. But as they sealed the door behind them, a new urgent notification flashed:
*[Emergency Side Quest: Maintain Secrecy with Ally]*
*Convince or ally with Elena Voss without full revelation for 72 hours.*
*Reward: +50 Necro Essence + Temporary Bond Buff (improved coordination in fights).*
*Failure: Increased group suspicion or loss of potential ally.*
Back in the main hall, preparations continued, but Ted felt the walls tightening. The breakout was coming fast. Marcus's glares had intensified after Elena's brief absence with him. The horde outside growled louder.
Ted gripped his pack, the Necro System's blue text hovering at the edge of his vision like a constant reminder.
He was no longer just surviving the dead.
He was becoming something that could command them, if he lived long enough to reach that power.
Dusk tomorrow would decide a lot.
