Chapter 9 - The accusation

The central hall fell into a heavy silence as all eyes turned toward Ted. Captain Reyes stood with her arms crossed, expression unreadable. Marcus leaned on his bat like a throne, a smug grin barely hidden behind feigned concern. Elena hovered near the edge of the circle, her hand resting near her pistol holster, not threatening, but ready. The other survivors watched with a mix of fear and curiosity. In a cramped shelter where trust was the only currency left, accusations like this could end lives faster than the virus.

Ted felt the weight of every stare. His Minor Flesh Mask was still active, keeping his skin tone normal and hiding the subtle chill. The new Emergency Quest timer ticked silently in his vision:

*[Emergency Quest: Defuse Suspicion – 47 hours 52 minutes remaining.]*

He took a slow breath, forcing his voice to stay calm and steady. No panic. No defensiveness. Just a tired, ordinary survivor trying to stay alive.

"Marcus is right to be careful," Ted said evenly, meeting the bully's eyes first before turning to Captain Reyes. "We're all scared. People are turning out there. If I were in his shoes, I'd be suspicious too. But I'm not bitten. I'm not infected. Check my arms, my neck, anywhere you want."

He rolled up both sleeves deliberately, revealing smooth, unmarked skin. The graze from the tunnel and the scratches from yesterday's fights had healed completely thanks to Basic Undead Regeneration, but under the Flesh Mask they looked like they had never existed at all or at worst, like faint old scars from before the outbreak.

Marcus stepped closer, eyes narrowed. "That's exactly the problem. Yesterday you had a fresh cut on your shoulder. I saw it. Now it's gone like it never happened. Normal people don't heal that fast without medical help."

Ted shrugged, keeping his tone reasonable. "Adrenaline and luck. The cut was shallow. Dr. Patel gave me some of the new antibiotics and bandages from the infirmary run. It wasn't deep. You were busy fighting those mutants, maybe you misremembered how bad it looked."

One of the nurses nodded from the medical corner. "The antivirals and regen-stim patches we brought back do accelerate minor healing. It's possible."

Elena spoke up, her voice calm. "I was with him in the infirmary and on the surface run today. Ted took risks to protect the group. He didn't hesitate when those things came at us. If he was turning, wouldn't he have shown signs by now? Fever, aggression, gray skin? He looks normal to me."

Captain Reyes studied Ted for a long moment, then turned to Marcus. "Kane, you've made serious claims. Proof matters more than gut feeling right now. We strip-search him if necessary, but I won't exile or execute a useful survivor based on 'he healed too fast.' We need every able body. Harlan, you'll submit to a full medical check tomorrow morning. Blood draw, temperature, the works. Until then, everyone stands down. No more accusations without evidence. Understood?"

Marcus's jaw clenched, but he backed off with a sharp nod. "Fine. But when he turns and bites someone in their sleep, don't say I didn't warn you."

The crowd slowly dispersed, tension easing but not vanishing. Whispers followed Ted as he returned to his cot. Some survivors avoided eye contact. Others gave him small nods of support.

Elena sat down near him once the hall quieted. "That was close. You handled it well, but Marcus won't let this go. He's got a few people on his side already, the ones who think strong leadership means throwing out anyone suspicious."

Ted nodded gratefully. "Thanks for backing me. I owe you one."

She studied him again with those sharp eyes. "Just don't make me regret it. If there's anything you're hiding, even if it's not the virus, tell me before it blows up. We're in this together now."

Before Ted could reply, a new System notification flashed, rewarding his careful handling:

*[Emergency Quest Progress: Suspicion partially defused. +30 Necro Essence. Quest timer extended by 24 hours.]*

His total rose to 183 Essence. A solid buffer.

Later that night, as most of the shelter slept, Ted lay awake. The daily quest was complete, but the pressure remained. He opened the Necro Shop mentally and made two careful purchases:

*[Scent Mask purchased (60 Essence). Remaining: 123. Duration: 72 hours. Undead odor fully suppressed.]*

*[Zombie Sense Upgrade already active, no further spend.]*

The faint rotting scent he had started noticing on himself vanished completely. He felt safer, more in control.

But sleep brought uneasy dreams: blue text floating in darkness, hordes of mutated zombies breaking through shelter walls, Marcus's face twisting into something monstrous as he swung his bat.

He woke early to the sound of alarms, not the full outbreak siren, but a warning beep from the security monitors.

Captain Reyes's voice cut through the hall. "All hands! Minor breach on sub-level 2 utility access. A small group of infected got through a weakened vent. Teams form up, we clear it before they reach the main hall!"

Marcus was already grabbing his bat, shooting Ted a dark look. "Let's see how 'lucky' you really are today, Harlan."

Elena tossed Ted a spare pipe. "Stay close to me. We'll watch each other's backs."

The shelter erupted into controlled chaos as survivors armed themselves and moved toward the breach point. Ted felt the familiar mix of fear and anticipation. A breach meant infected inside the shelter, perfect opportunities for discreet feeding if he played it right.

As the group approached the utility corridor, Hunger Sense lit up brightly: at least twelve infected signatures, including two mutated variants already inside the perimeter.

The real test was beginning.

Ted gripped the pipe tighter, the Necro System humming quietly in his mind.

*[New Side Quest: Silent Defense]*

*Eliminate at least 4 Infected during the breach without drawing attention to your methods.*

*Reward: +40 Necro Essence + Chance at Level 2 unlock progress.]*

He stepped forward with the others, heart steady despite the rising moans ahead.

The dead had come to them this time.

And Ted was ready to grow in the chaos.
