Chapter 34 - A Day at the Lake

The morning sun sparkled on the lake like scattered diamonds as Ethan and I stepped onto the small dock. He held my hand tightly, his fingers intertwined with mine, the warmth of his touch grounding me in the moment.

"Ready for our little adventure?" he asked, his grin wide and mischievous.

"As ready as I'll ever be," I replied, a mix of excitement and nervousness fluttering in my chest. "Just promise you won't let me fall in the water."

He laughed, pulling me close. "No promises," he teased, though his eyes sparkled with affection. "But I'll catch you if you do."

We climbed into the small rowboat he had rented. The gentle rocking of the boat and the soft lapping of water against its sides set a serene rhythm. I rested my head against his shoulder, letting the calmness wash over me.

"I could stay like this forever," I whispered.

Ethan kissed the top of my head. "Me too. But I want more than just sitting here. I want… everything with you. Every laugh, every sunset, every quiet morning. All of it."

My heart thumped in my chest. "I feel the same… more than I ever thought I could."

We rowed gently across the lake, laughter spilling from us as Ethan pretended to be a professional rower while I dramatically "struggled" against the oars.

"Hey!" he exclaimed, laughing. "You're supposed to row, not just splash water at me!"

"I'm helping!" I shot back, flicking a bit of water his way.

Soon we were both soaked, laughing until our sides hurt. Then Ethan pulled me into his lap, holding me close, letting the warmth of his body chase away the chill from the spray.

"You're impossible," I whispered, though my voice was soft with affection.

"And you love it," he countered, brushing a damp strand of hair from my face and kissing me slowly, the kind of kiss that made time stop and the world blur around us.

After a while, we drifted to a quiet corner of the lake, surrounded by reeds and the gentle hum of nature. I rested my head against his chest, listening to the steady beat of his heart.

"Lara," he said, voice low and serious, "I know we've had our playful moments, our teasing, even our little arguments… but nothing makes me doubt that we're meant to be together. I want all of it—life with you."

Tears pricked my eyes. "Ethan… I want that too. All of it, forever."

He leaned down to kiss me again, soft and lingering. "Forever," he murmured against my lips.

Later, as we rowed back to the dock, Maya appeared, waving wildly. "Finally! I thought you two had gotten eaten by the lake!" she called, smirking.

"You're just in time," Ethan said, lifting me slightly as if to show off our perfect day. "We survived… and I caught her!"

Maya rolled her eyes but smiled. "You two are unbearable."

I laughed, feeling a warmth that wasn't just from the sun or the boat. "We're happy, Maya. That's all that matters."

After drying off, we sat on the dock, sharing a picnic Ethan had packed. We teased each other, swapped bites of food, and shared soft, lingering touches. Every laugh, every glance, every kiss made the day feel like a series of perfect, stolen moments.

As the sun dipped toward the horizon, casting gold and pink across the water, Ethan wrapped his arms around me. "You know," he whispered, "days like this… I never want them to end. Just you, me, and the world fading away."

"Me neither," I said softly, leaning into him. "Just you and me… always."

And in that quiet, sunlit lake, with water shimmering like tiny stars, I realized something profound: love wasn't about grand gestures alone. It was about the laughter, the playful teasing, the quiet promises, and knowing you were safe in each other's arms—always.
