Chapter 39 - The Festival of Lights

The streets were alive with energy. Lanterns hung from every corner, laughter and music filling the air, and the smell of sweet pastries drifting from the food stalls. Ethan grabbed my hand, pulling me along with a grin.

"You're going to love this," he said, eyes twinkling. "The Festival of Lights is magical."

"I can see that already," I replied, smiling, squeezing his hand. "It's beautiful."

We walked past crowds of smiling people, Ethan pointing out little curiosities—a musician playing a gentle tune on a violin, a street artist painting tiny lanterns, a stall selling candles shaped like flowers.

"Wait, come here," Ethan said suddenly, tugging me toward a small booth. "I dare you to pick the most ridiculous mask and wear it."

I laughed, shaking my head. "You're ridiculous. But… fine."

I chose a bright pink mask with exaggerated eyelashes and placed it over my face. Ethan burst into laughter, clapping his hands.

"You look… terrifying," he said, grinning.

"And you love it," I shot back, flicking water from a nearby fountain toward him.

"I do," he admitted, catching my hand and pulling me close, "because it's you being silly, and I love it."

Later, we wandered to a quiet spot along the river, the lanterns reflecting in the water like floating stars. Ethan held me close, brushing a strand of hair from my face.

"You know," he said softly, "I don't need the festival, the lights, or the music… as long as I have you, everything feels magical."

My chest tightened. "I feel the same, Ethan. You make everything… brighter, lighter, happier."

He kissed me slowly, holding me tightly. "Forever?" he whispered.

"Forever," I murmured, resting my head on his chest.

Maya appeared suddenly, snapping photos. "You two are unbearable!" she exclaimed, laughing. "But… I guess that's why you're perfect together."

Ethan grinned, holding me close. "We're happy, Maya. That's all that matters."

We joined the crowd for the lantern release, each of us holding a small floating lantern. I wrote a secret wish on mine before releasing it into the river, watching it drift away with the others.

Ethan leaned down, brushing his lips along my forehead. "Whatever comes next, Lara… we face it together. Always."

"Together," I whispered, feeling my heart swell.

We laughed, teased, and shared quiet moments under the festival lights. Each stolen glance, each gentle touch, and each shared laugh was a reminder that love wasn't just in grand gestures—it was in the playful moments, emotional confessions, and knowing you were safe in each other's arms.

As the night grew darker, the river shimmered with a thousand floating lights. Ethan wrapped his arms around me, holding me close. "You know," he whispered, "I never believed in magic until I met you. Every day with you feels like a gift.

"I feel the same," I said softly, leaning into him. "You make life beautiful, Ethan. And I never want this feeling to end."

He kissed me tenderly, lingering just long enough to make my heart race. "It won't end. Not ever. I promise."

Maya smiled from nearby, capturing the perfect moment on camera. "You two are officially impossible… but I'll allow it this time," she said, laughing.

And under the shimmering lights of the Festival, I realized something truly profound: love was about laughter, stolen glances, tender touches, and the certainty that your heart belonged to someone forever.
