Chapter 38 - Lanterns and Laughter

The evening air was crisp and carried the faint scent of flowers from the nearby gardens. Ethan had promised a surprise, but I had no idea what it could be. The streets were lined with tiny paper lanterns, glowing softly, their light reflecting in the river that ran alongside the town.

"You're quiet," Ethan whispered, brushing a strand of hair from my face as we walked hand in hand.

"I'm just… curious," I admitted, smiling. "You've been hinting at this all day, and now I'm imagining all sorts of scenarios."

He laughed softly, eyes twinkling. "Good. I love seeing your curiosity… and your excitement."

We arrived at a small clearing by the riverbank. The scene before us took my breath away: hundreds of lanterns floated gently on the water, their warm glow mirrored in the rippling surface. A small band played soft acoustic music nearby, completing the magical atmosphere.

"Oh… Ethan," I whispered, feeling tears prick my eyes. "It's beautiful."

"And so are you," he murmured, squeezing my hand gently.

We wandered along the riverbank, letting our fingers intertwine, the soft light of the lanterns reflecting in Ethan's eyes. He occasionally brushed my hair back, his touch sending shivers down my spine.

"You know," he said softly, "I could stay here forever… with you."

"I could too," I replied, resting my head on his shoulder. "This… it's perfect. Just you, me, and the world fading away."

Maya appeared from behind a tree, holding her camera. "And here I thought I'd catch a romantic moment without interruptions!" she teased, grinning.

Ethan laughed, wrapping his arm around me. "We're happy, Maya. That's all that matters."

"Fine," she said, shaking her head, "but don't think I won't tease you two about this for years to come."

We found a quiet spot near the water and sat down, letting our legs dangle over the edge of the bank. Ethan held me close, his arm around my shoulders, and whispered, "I love seeing you like this… happy, relaxed, glowing. You make every moment better."

"You make every moment better, Ethan," I said softly, my heart full.

He leaned down, kissing me gently, lingering just long enough to make my heart race. "Forever," he whispered against my lips.

As the night deepened, we released our own lantern onto the river, watching it drift away with the others. I made a silent wish: that our love would always remain this pure, this strong, and this full of joy.

Ethan noticed my thoughtful expression. "What's on your mind?" he asked softly.

"I just… I wish moments like this could last forever," I admitted.

"They can," he said, pulling me closer. "Not exactly like this, but every day we choose each other… that's our forever."

I rested my head against his chest, feeling the steady rhythm of his heartbeat. "I choose you, Ethan. Every day."

"I choose you too, Lara. Always," he whispered, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of my head.

Maya joined us, snapping a few photos of the lanterns reflecting in the water. "Fine," she said with a grin. "You two are officially insufferable… but I'll let it slide this time."

We laughed together, sharing quiet conversations, playful teasing, and soft touches as the lanterns floated silently down the river. Each moment felt like a promise—a promise of love, laughter, and togetherness.

By the time we returned to our hotel, the stars were scattered across the sky, and the city below shimmered in the soft glow of the lanterns. Ethan held me close, pressing a soft kiss to my forehead.

"Whatever comes next, Lara… we face it together," he whispered.

"Together," I murmured, resting my head on his chest, knowing that our love was strong enough to last a lifetime.
