Chapter 40 - Forever and Always

The morning light streamed through the hotel window, painting the room in soft gold. I stirred awake to the familiar warmth of Ethan's arms around me, his face resting near my shoulder.

"Good morning," he whispered, his voice husky with sleep.

"Good morning," I replied, snuggling closer. "You smell like coffee and… happiness."

He chuckled softly, pressing a gentle kiss to my temple. "I like that scent too… especially when it comes from you."

After breakfast, Ethan suggested we take one last walk through the quaint little town before heading home. Hand in hand, we wandered along cobblestone streets lined with flowers and shops. The air was crisp, filled with laughter, music, and the faint scent of pastries from a nearby bakery.

"You know," he said, brushing a strand of hair from my face, "these past few days have been… perfect. Every moment, every laugh, every little adventure… I wouldn't trade a second of it."

"I feel the same," I replied softly. "You've made me happier than I ever thought possible."

Ethan stopped walking, turning to face me. "Lara… I have something I want to say."

My heart skipped a beat. "What is it?"

He took both my hands in his, eyes locking with mine. "These past months with you have shown me what love truly means. It's not just the grand gestures or the surprises… it's the laughter, the quiet moments, the teasing, and the way my heart feels full just being near you. I love you, Lara… completely, utterly, forever."

Tears filled my eyes, and I whispered, "Ethan… I love you too. More than words can ever say."

He smiled, pulling me close, our foreheads touching. "Then let's make a promise," he said softly. "No matter what happens, no matter the distance, no matter the challenges… we face it together. Always."

"Always," I whispered, feeling my heart swell.

Later, we met Maya at the lakeside park, where the festival lights still lingered, lanterns floating gently on the water.

"You two are unbearable," she teased, though her smile betrayed her amusement. "But… I guess that's why you're perfect for each other."

Ethan grinned, pulling me into his arms. "We're happy, Maya. That's all that matters."

Maya laughed, shaking her head. "Fine. But don't think I won't remind you of all this later!"

We released our final lanterns into the river, each carrying our silent wishes and promises. The lanterns floated slowly, reflecting in the water like tiny stars, and I felt a sense of peace wash over me.

"Lara," Ethan said, brushing his lips against my temple, "I never want our story to end. Every day with you is a gift, every moment with you is magic. Will you promise me… we keep making memories like this, forever?"

"I promise," I whispered, tears of joy glistening in my eyes. "Forever, Ethan. Always."

The sun set in a blaze of pink and gold, painting the sky as we stood on the dock, holding each other close. The world seemed to pause, the music, the lanterns, the laughter—all blending into the perfect moment.

Maya, ever the comic relief, snapped one last photo. "You two are officially the happiest people on the planet. I swear, I can't even with you!"

I laughed, resting my head against Ethan's chest. "We don't need anyone else, Maya. Just us."

Ethan pressed a soft kiss to my forehead, holding me tightly. "Just us… forever."

And in that moment, I knew it was true: love wasn't just in grand gestures or fleeting moments—it was in the laughter, the stolen glances, the tender touches, and the certainty that your heart belonged to someone forever.

As the stars sparkled above, Ethan whispered against my hair, "I love you, Lara. Forever and always."

"Forever and always," I replied, feeling my heart overflow with happiness, knowing that our story—our adventure, our love—was only beginning.
