Chapter 18 - Chapter-17: The Twins Secret

We were gathered in what used to be the old science lab, dust coating every surface, broken beakers scattered like forgotten memories.

Lara immediately bounced around, waving her chair. "Alright, new recruits! Step one of comedy-horror survival: learn the art of jokes! Step two: maybe survive. Step three: snacks optional but necessary."

Chloe and Liam exchanged a nervous glance. "We're not… funny," Chloe whispered.

Lara grinned. "Perfect. That means you're terrifyingly relatable. Exactly what we need."

Felix muttered, "I think I just aged twenty years listening to her."

Sarah raised an eyebrow, holding the cube carefully. "Focus, Lara. We're here for something important."

Mira's glow pulsed faintly. "The twins… they know more than they realize. Chloe, Liam, what can you tell us about the school?"

Chloe hesitated, then whispered, "There are… certain rooms. Locked rooms. They aren't on any maps, but they're… important. Dangerous. And some of the teachers… they're not really teachers."

Liam nodded. "Yeah. We've… seen things. Hallways shift. Rooms appear and disappear. And the shadows—they behave differently near certain objects, certain symbols. It's like the school reacts to them."

Kai's analytical mind immediately kicked in. "So if we can locate these rooms or objects, we might manipulate the shadows more efficiently. Use them to our advantage."

Felix groaned. "Or get eaten faster. Fantastic."

Lara nudged him. "Relax! Step one: follow my jokes. Step two: survive. Step three: optional victory dance."

Emily and Jordan were wide-eyed, obviously terrified, but Mira's calm presence kept the group focused.

"Good," Mira said. "If the school reacts to certain objects or symbols, then these rooms could be used for a bigger trap. The cube alone isn't enough—we need leverage, and the twins know where it can be found."

Chloe glanced nervously at Liam. "We… we know one of the old teacher's offices. Locked. There's a symbol on the floor. If the shadows pass it, they hesitate."

Sarah's eyes lit up. "Perfect. That's exactly what we need. This could be the basis for a permanent trap—or at least a more controlled one."

Lara raised her chair. "Step four: train the twins in survival comedy. Step five: I claim the front line of joke defense. Step six: optional snacks. Step seven: profit?"

Felix groaned again. "I'm already dead."

Kai ignored him, already planning. "With the twins' knowledge, Mira's power, and the cube, we can predict the shadows' behavior. Timing and coordination will be critical. If we fail… there won't be a next time."

Mira's glow brightened slightly. "We succeed. But only if everyone trusts each other completely. No hesitation. No doubt. And… no letting Lara's jokes distract you too much."

Lara gasped. "Hey! My jokes save lives!"

Felix muttered, "At least in our sanity's twisted version of survival."

I swallowed, realizing we had more tools, more allies, and more hope than before. But the school wasn't finished testing us.

And the next trap… would be our biggest challenge yet.
