The hallway was quiet after our first successful trap. For a moment, I allowed myself to breathe—until we heard faint whispers echoing from the walls.
"What now?" Felix muttered, clinging to his broomstick like it was a life raft.
Lara grinned. "Hopefully more people to witness my heroic comedy!"
From the shadows, a group emerged—four figures, pale and trembling, but unmistakably alive. One of them, a girl with glasses and messy hair, stepped forward.
"I… I'm Emily," she said nervously. "We've been hiding here for days. Nobody believes us. Everyone… everyone disappears."
Kai immediately scanned them. "You've survived until now… that means you're cautious, observant, and probably resourceful. Useful."
A boy stepped forward next, tall, with a backpack that looked like it had been dragged through every horror trope imaginable. "I'm Jordan. And yes… we know this place is alive. We've seen it twist and reshape the hallways."
Mira's glow pulsed faintly. "Then you understand. You can help us. But you need to follow instructions. Timing is everything. One mistake and…"
She didn't finish the sentence, but we all understood. The shadows wouldn't just attack—they'd consume.
The remaining two were twins, Chloe and Liam. "We've tried hiding, running… nothing works," Chloe said. "You can trap the shadows?"
Lara raised her chair heroically. "You bet! Step one: stay behind me. Step two: listen to my jokes. Step three: survive."
Felix muttered, "Step four: pray we all make it out alive."
Sarah stepped forward, holding the cube. "The shadows are learning. They'll adapt. That's why we need more brains, more skills, more… help."
Emily nodded. "We've noticed patterns. The shadows seem to respond to fear and… sometimes confusion. If we distract them together, maybe we can control the hallways."
Kai's eyes lit up. "Exactly. If we synchronize movements, manipulate their reactions, and use the cube strategically, we can trap them more efficiently—and maybe even map the school's layout."
Mira's glow strengthened. "Good. But remember… they can also sense mistrust. If we doubt each other, the shadows will exploit it. Stick together."
I looked at the new group. They were scared, yes, but determined. And somehow, even in the face of impossible monsters, there was hope.
Lara nudged Felix. "Welcome to the comedy-horror survival team. Step one: survive. Step two: more jokes. Step three: optional snacks."
Felix groaned. "I'm already dead inside."
Sarah raised an eyebrow. "Then follow instructions. We'll need every advantage."
Mira's hands glowed faintly, guiding the shadows away from the group. "Prepare for the next trap. With them, we have a chance to turn the tides."
And for the first time since entering Noorwood High, it felt like maybe, just maybe, we weren't completely alone.
