The moment we stepped out of the library, the air changed. It wasn't just the dust or the stale smell of the school—it was watching. Every corner, every hallway seemed alive.
Felix groaned. "I hate this. I hate everything about this place. I officially quit horror forever. Actually, I quit life forever."
Lara rolled her eyes. "Oh, come on. You survived a library ambush! That's like… what? Level two of the horror video game? Level three if you count the evil janitor guy."
Kai ignored her. He was already scanning the corridor ahead, calculating angles, distances, and the most efficient escape route if things went south. "The cube will only work for a short time. They'll know we've taken it. We need to move carefully."
Mira's glow pulsed faintly. "They can sense it. The shadows are converging. And the faceless thing… it's coming."
I felt my stomach twist. The faceless creature appeared at the end of the hallway. Taller than before. Limbs bending in impossible angles, its smooth, smiling face tilted at us like it had all the time in the world.
Sarah tightened her grip on the cube. "We hold it together. Don't panic."
Felix panicked anyway. "I'm panicking! Big time! Somebody do something!"
"Me first," Lara said, raising her chair like a battle standard. "Humor is my weapon, and you're about to be endangered by it, shadows!"
The shadows surged. Dark, twisting tendrils shot toward us, faster than I could react. Felix swung his broomstick wildly. One shadow struck, snapping like smoke and claws. I screamed, trying to back away while helping him push it off.
Mira's glow flared, pushing the nearest shadows back. "Keep it distracted! Don't let them reach the cube!"
Kai shouted directions. "Left flank! Cover Felix! Lara, use the jokes!"
Lara shouted a pun at the shadows: "Why don't ghosts like rain? Because it dampens their spirits!"
And somehow—against all logic—the shadows froze.
Felix blinked. "I… I think it actually worked."
Sarah seized the moment. "Move! Straight to the stairwell! Don't stop!"
We sprinted down the hall, shadows snapping at our heels. The faceless creature extended an impossibly long arm, but Mira's hands glowed, holding it at bay just long enough.
Breath burned in my lungs. Adrenaline surged. "We can do this. Just keep going!"
The stairwell door slammed behind us. Shadows thrashed, unable to follow. The cube hummed in Sarah's hands, pulsing with power.
Lara collapsed against the wall, panting. "Victory? Kind of. Survived? Definitely. Alive? Questionable."
Felix groaned. "I think my soul is missing. Can someone check for it?"
Mira's eyes glowed faintly, but exhaustion was visible. "This was only the first wave. They know we have the cube now… and they won't stop."
Kai adjusted his stance. "Then we prepare. Strategize. We fight smarter next time."
I swallowed. "Yeah… because somehow surviving a library ambush wasn't enough."
Sarah clenched the cube. "We'll survive. Together. But the next strike… it's going to be worse."
And I knew she was right.
Noorwood High wasn't finished with us.
