Chapter 23 - Beyond the Realms

The palace did not hold him for long after the realization settled, as remaining within its structured stillness no longer provided any meaningful advantage. The patterns forming within Asgard were too contained, too predictable, and therefore too easy for whatever influenced him to manipulate without resistance.

Ethan moved without hesitation toward the Bifrost once more, his posture composed and deliberate as the decision to leave formed with clear intent rather than reaction. Internally, however, his reasoning had already shifted toward something far more strategic and significantly less comfortable.

"…If it is guiding me here, then staying here only makes its job easier," he thought carefully, maintaining external calm as the golden pathways of Asgard stretched ahead. "…so the obvious solution is to move somewhere it does not expect, or at least somewhere it has less control."

The bridge responded to his approach immediately, the energy beneath it humming with restrained power as if recognizing his intent before he fully expressed it. The vast structure stood ready, not as a passive tool, but as something that aligned itself naturally with his authority.

Heimdall stood at the center, his presence steady and unshaken as his gaze met Ethan's with quiet understanding. There was no question in his posture, only awareness that something had shifted beyond ordinary perception.

"You intend to leave Asgard again without prior announcement," Heimdall said, his voice calm yet carrying a depth that suggested he had already seen more than he was stating openly. "The patterns beyond the realms have begun shifting in ways that are not entirely visible yet."

Ethan did not respond immediately, allowing the statement to settle as if it aligned with what he had already considered. Internally, however, the confirmation reinforced his decision with greater urgency.

"…Good, it is not just me noticing this," he thought carefully, maintaining composure as the situation expanded beyond internal conflict. "…which means this problem exists externally as well, and I am not completely losing my mind yet."

"Open the Bifrost," Ethan said calmly, his tone measured as the command carried without hesitation or explanation. "Not to Vanaheim, and not to any location currently under observation or active response."

Heimdall's expression did not change, but the pause that followed carried weight as if the request required more than simple execution. The silence stretched briefly before he spoke again.

"You are choosing an untracked path," Heimdall said slowly, his gaze steady as he evaluated the implications rather than the instruction itself. "There are regions where even I do not maintain full sight, and what lies there is not always aligned with Asgard's interests."

Ethan held his position, allowing the words to settle as if they were part of a calculation rather than a warning. Internally, however, his thoughts had already reached a conclusion.

"…Perfect," he thought dryly, maintaining composure despite the implication. "…if even Heimdall cannot fully observe it, then whatever is editing me might also struggle, which is exactly what I need right now."

"Then that is where we go," he replied evenly, his voice carrying quiet certainty as the decision solidified. "If something is mapping the realms, then we will step outside the map and observe from a position it does not anticipate."

The energy beneath the bridge shifted, responding to the command as the Bifrost began to form, not along a familiar path but toward something less defined. The light rose, bending space in a way that felt less stable than previous transitions.

A second presence approached rapidly, heavier and more direct than subtle observation would allow. Thor arrived without hesitation, his stance firm as lightning flickered faintly around him.

"You are leaving again," Thor said, his tone steady but carrying clear intent, "and this time you are not informing the court or the council of your destination."

Ethan turned slightly, acknowledging the statement without altering his posture or delaying the activation of the Bifrost. Internally, however, his thoughts had already adjusted to the additional variable.

"…Of course he followed," he noted, maintaining composure as the situation continued evolving. "…which is fine, because having someone who can actually fight things is generally useful in situations like this."

"Because this is not a situation that benefits from discussion," Ethan replied calmly, his tone measured as the reasoning aligned with his strategy. "If something is guiding outcomes, then predictable movement only reinforces its advantage."

Thor studied him for a moment, the tension in his stance not born from disagreement, but from concern regarding the scale of the decision. The hesitation lasted only briefly before resolve replaced it.

"Then I will accompany you," Thor said firmly, stepping forward without waiting for permission or further clarification. "If this is beyond what we faced in Vanaheim, then you will not face it alone."

Ethan did not refuse, nor did he delay, allowing the decision to integrate seamlessly into the unfolding situation. Internally, however, his thoughts had already accepted the benefit.

"…Good," he thought, maintaining composure as the Bifrost intensified around them. "…because if this goes wrong, I would prefer not to be the only one present when it does."

Another presence lingered at the edge of the platform, not stepping forward immediately but observing with quiet interest that did not hide itself completely. Loki stood just beyond the threshold, his gaze fixed on the forming path.

"You are going somewhere unseen," Loki said lightly, though the tone carried sharper intent beneath its surface, "and you expect that to solve a problem that you have not yet explained."

Ethan did not turn fully, though his awareness remained fixed on Loki as the moment stretched. Internally, however, the situation had already been categorized.

"…He is not wrong," Ethan admitted silently, maintaining external calm as the tension built. "…but explaining this would not improve anything, and would likely make it worse."

"Understanding is not required for participation," Ethan said evenly, his voice steady as the statement carried quiet authority. "Only the willingness to act when necessary."

Loki smiled faintly, though this time the expression carried more calculation than amusement as he stepped back rather than forward. The choice was deliberate.

"Then I will observe from a distance," Loki replied smoothly, his gaze lingering as the Bifrost intensified further. "Because whatever you are doing, it is far more interesting when it is not fully explained."

The light surged.

Space bent.

The path opened.

Ethan stepped forward without hesitation, crossing into the Bifrost as the unknown destination aligned before him. Thor followed immediately, his presence anchoring the transition with force rather than subtlety.

The world shifted and this time it did not stabilize cleanly.

The transition fractured slightly, the usual seamless movement replaced by a brief distortion that felt unfamiliar and misaligned. The destination did not resolve immediately, instead forming in unstable layers.

Ethan's thoughts sharpened instantly as the difference registered.

"…That is not normal," he thought carefully, maintaining composure despite the disruption. "…which means we either succeeded in leaving the expected path, or we walked directly into something worse."

The light collapsed and the realm formed and what awaited them was not what the Bifrost should have shown.

Ethan's final thought formed with quiet clarity as the new landscape revealed itself.

"…Yeah, this is definitely not on the map."
