Chapter 1: The Day of Awakening
The sky above the capital shimmered with a strange, unnatural glow.
It wasn't sunrise.
It wasn't sunset.
It was something far more important.
Today was Awakening Day.
Every year, across the world, those who had reached the age of sixteen would gather under the authority of the System… and discover their fate.
Strength.
Power.
Or weakness.
Arin Vale stood among hundreds of students inside the massive stone plaza of the academy, his hands tucked quietly into his pockets. His expression was calm, but his eyes were sharp—observing everything.
Above them floated a colossal magic structure.
A circular formation of glowing runes.
The Awakening Gate.
No one knew who created it.
No one knew where it came from.
But one thing was certain—
It decided everything.
"Man… I'm nervous."
A voice beside him muttered.
Arin turned slightly.
A tall boy scratched the back of his head, laughing awkwardly.
"Imagine getting a Common class… I'd just disappear."
Arin didn't respond.
He had heard it all before.
Fear.
Hope.
Dreams built on something none of them could control.
"Arin."
A soft voice called from behind.
He turned.
And for a moment, the noise of the crowd faded.
She stood there, calm and composed.
Long silver hair swayed gently in the wind.
Cold blue eyes, sharp and focused.
Lena.
She stepped closer, arms folded.
"You look too relaxed."
Arin gave a small shrug.
"Panicking won't change anything."
She studied him for a moment.
"You're not curious?"
"Of course I am."
"Then why don't you look like it?"
A faint smile appeared on Arin's face.
"Because I don't expect anything."
Lena didn't respond immediately.
She understood what he meant.
Expectations only led to disappointment.
A loud voice echoed across the plaza.
"Silence!"
An instructor stepped forward, wearing a long black coat marked with golden symbols.
"The Awakening Ceremony will now begin."
The crowd instantly quieted.
Tension filled the air.
"One by one, you will step forward. Place your hand on the Awakening Gate… and accept the System."
The first student walked forward.
A boy with trembling hands.
He reached the glowing structure.
Placed his hand against it.
Light exploded.
A screen appeared before him.
[Class Assigned: Shield Bearer]
[Rarity: Common]
A mix of reactions spread through the crowd.
Relief.
Disappointment.
Whispers.
One by one, students stepped forward.
"Fire Mage – Rare!"
"Dual Swordsman – Uncommon!"
"Wind Archer – Rare!"
Cheers erupted occasionally.
But most awakenings were… average.
Arin watched silently.
Carefully.
Every detail.
"Next."
A name was called.
"Lena Frost."
The atmosphere changed instantly.
Whispers spread like wildfire.
"She's from the Frost family…"
"She has to be at least Elite…"
Lena walked forward calmly.
No hesitation.
No fear.
She stood before the Awakening Gate.
Raised her hand.
And touched it.
For a moment—
Nothing happened.
Then—
The entire plaza froze.
A surge of cold energy exploded outward.
Frost spread across the ground.
The air itself seemed to crystallize.
Light burst from the gate—
Brighter than anything before.
A screen appeared.
[Class Assigned: Ice Blade Mage]
[Rarity: Elite]
Silence.
Then—
The crowd erupted.
"ELITE?!"
"Incredible—!"
"A combat-mage hybrid?!"
Lena lowered her hand slowly.
Her expression didn't change.
But her eyes…
glowed faintly with icy light.
She turned.
Her gaze found Arin.
For a brief moment—
They said nothing.
But something had changed.
"Next."
The instructor's voice cut through the noise.
"Arin Vale."
The crowd barely reacted.
Just another name.
Another student.
Arin stepped forward.
Calm.
Steady.
He stood before the Awakening Gate.
And placed his hand on it.
Silence.
No light.
No reaction.
A frown appeared on the instructor's face.
"…Strange."
Then—
A flicker.
The runes glitched.
The light twisted unnaturally.
For a split second—
Something felt… wrong.
A screen appeared.
But it wasn't stable.
[Class Assigned: ???]
[Rarity: Unknown]
The system hesitated.
Then finalized.
[Class: Skills Ruler]
Silence.
"…What?"
No one understood.
Not the students.
Not the instructors.
Even Lena's eyes narrowed.
Arin stared at the screen.
No excitement.
No fear.
Just one thought—
Something isn't right.
