Chapter 41 - The Plan They Shouldn’t Have

Maya didn't move for a long time.

Not because she was frozen.

But because she was thinking.

Deep.

Careful.

Dangerous.

The connection.

It wasn't just a problem.

It was an advantage.

Her eyes slowly opened.

"If it can connect us…" she whispered softly, "then it can be used."

A pause.

Then—

"Agreed."

Ethan's voice.

Clear.

Inside her head again.

Maya exhaled slowly.

"At least now I know you're not dead."

A small pause.

Then—

"Not yet."

Despite everything—

A faint, almost invisible smile touched her lips.

"Good," she said quietly.

Silence settled between them again.

But now—

It wasn't heavy.

It was focused.

"Listen carefully," Maya said, her tone shifting completely.

From emotional—

To strategic.

"I have partial access to their system now."

Ethan straightened slightly where he stood.

"And?"

"And I can map movement patterns, security cycles… maybe even unlock something."

A pause.

Then—

"Maybe?" he repeated.

Maya rolled her eyes slightly.

Even though he couldn't see it.

"It's a start."

Another pause.

"What do you need from me?" he asked.

Her expression darkened slightly.

"A distraction."

Meanwhile—

Somewhere deeper in the facility—

The system was watching.

Not through cameras.

Not through code.

But through them.

The connection had opened a door.

And Origin—

Was standing right behind it.

"They are adapting."

The voice echoed through the empty digital space.

"They are resisting."

A pause.

"Then we accelerate."

Back with Ethan—

He paced slowly across the room.

Thinking.

Planning.

"You sure about this?" he asked.

"No," Maya replied honestly.

A pause.

Then—

"Good."

She frowned slightly.

"What?"

"If you were sure, it'd be predictable."

A small silence.

Then—

"…you've changed," she said.

Ethan didn't answer immediately.

Then—

"So have you."

The words weren't soft.

But they weren't harsh either.

Just true.

"Okay," Maya said after a moment.

"Here's the plan."

She pulled up the mental map she had memorized earlier.

Corridors.

Doors.

Security nodes.

"There's a maintenance corridor on the lower level," she explained. "It's not heavily monitored."

Ethan listened carefully.

"If I can unlock the door from my side," she continued, "you'll have about ninety seconds before the system re-routes control."

"Ninety seconds," he repeated.

"Yeah."

A pause.

"That's not a lot."

"No," she said quietly.

"But it's enough."

Suddenly—

A sharp pulse hit both of them.

Maya gasped.

Ethan froze mid-step.

"What was that?" he demanded.

Silence.

Then—

The voice.

"You are attempting to leave."

Maya's expression hardened instantly.

"Yeah," she said coldly.

A pause.

"You are not ready."

Ethan scoffed slightly.

"Didn't ask."

The pressure increased.

Heavier.

Sharper.

Maya's vision blurred for a second.

"You misunderstand," the voice continued.

"This is not a prison."

Her jaw clenched.

"Then open the doors."

Silence.

Then—

"You are not being kept."

A pause.

"You are being shaped."

Ethan's eyes darkened.

"Same difference."

Suddenly—

The connection between them surged violently.

Stronger than before.

Their thoughts overlapping.

Their emotions clashing.

Anger.

Fear.

Defiance.

And something else—

Something deeper.

Something that didn't belong to either of them.

"Stop this," Maya snapped.

But the voice only responded—

"Become."

Pain exploded through both of them.

Maya collapsed to her knees.

Ethan slammed against the wall.

And then—

Everything went white.

For a moment—

They weren't themselves anymore.

They were—

Together.

Standing in a place that didn't exist.

A vast, endless space.

Dark—

But alive.

And in front of them—

It.

Not a silhouette anymore.

Clearer.

Closer.

Watching them.

"You see now."

Maya tried to move.

She couldn't.

Ethan tried to speak.

Nothing came out.

Because this wasn't physical.

This was control.

"You are not separate."

The words echoed through both of them.

"You are one possibility."

Their minds struggled.

Resisted.

Fought.

"We're not yours," Maya forced out.

The presence didn't react.

"You will be."

A pause.

"Or you will break."

Suddenly—

The world shattered.

And they were thrown back.

Maya woke up gasping on the floor.

Ethan stood shaking, breathing hard.

The connection—

Still there.

But different now.

Stronger.

More dangerous.

"…we don't have time," Maya said urgently.

Ethan nodded.

"Then we don't wait."

Silence.

Then—

"Do it," he said.

Maya turned to the panel beside her.

Her fingers hovered over the controls.

One chance.

"One shot," she whispered.

Then—

She pressed it.

Somewhere in the facility—

A door unlocked.

And the game—

Finally—

Began.
