Chapter 42 - When the System Fights Back

The moment the door unlocked—

Everything changed.

Ethan didn't hesitate.

He moved instantly.

Out.

Into the corridor.

The hallway was quiet.

Too quiet.

No guards.

No alarms.

Nothing.

Ethan slowed slightly.

"…that's not right," he muttered.

Inside his mind—

"Move," Maya's voice came quickly.

"I am," he replied.

But his eyes kept scanning.

Because this—

This felt wrong.

"They know," he said suddenly.

A pause.

Then—

"Yeah," Maya answered.

Silence.

"They're letting you go."

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"Or guiding me."

Back with Maya—

Her fingers moved quickly across the interface.

Closing logs.

Masking commands.

Trying to erase her tracks.

But the system—

Was adapting faster.

Warnings started flashing.

Red.

Silent.

But aggressive.

ACCESS TRACE INITIATED

Maya's eyes narrowed.

"…not good."

She typed faster.

"Ethan," she said sharply.

"Yeah?"

"They're tracking me."

A pause.

"Then stop helping me."

Her hands froze for half a second.

"No."

Her answer came instantly.

"I started this," she said quietly.

"I finish it."

Meanwhile—

Ethan turned a corner—

And froze.

A guard stood there.

Waiting.

Not surprised.

Not alarmed.

Prepared.

"So," the guard said calmly.

"You're the one."

Ethan's expression didn't change.

"Move."

The guard didn't.

Instead—

He stepped forward slowly.

"You really think this is an escape?"

Ethan tilted his head slightly.

"No."

A pause.

"I think it's a test."

The guard smiled faintly.

"Good."

Then—

He attacked.

Fast.

Precise.

But Ethan—

Was faster.

He dodged—

Countered—

And within seconds—

The guard was on the ground.

Unconscious.

Ethan stood over him.

Breathing steady.

"…definitely a test," he muttered.

Back with Maya—

The system warnings increased.

MULTIPLE ACCESS VIOLATIONS

TRACE CONFIRMED

Her heart started racing.

"Okay… okay…" she whispered.

Think.

Move.

Adapt.

Then—

The door behind her clicked.

Maya froze.

Slowly—

She turned.

The man in black stood there.

Silent.

Watching.

"…you're learning fast," he said calmly.

Maya didn't move.

Didn't panic.

Good.

"You gave me access," she replied.

A pause.

"I used it."

He stepped closer.

"And abused it."

Silence.

Maya held his gaze.

"You wanted results."

A small pause.

"I'm giving them."

For a moment—

Nothing.

Then—

The man in black smiled slightly.

Not angry.

Not surprised.

Interested.

"Perhaps," he said slowly.

"But you're still thinking too small."

Her brows furrowed slightly.

"What do you mean?"

He stopped in front of her.

"You think this is about control."

A pause.

"It isn't."

Her chest tightened slightly.

"Then what is it about?"

Silence.

Then—

"Creation."

The word hit differently.

Maya's mind flashed back—

The file.

The message.

Origin.

"You created it," she said slowly.

The man in black shook his head.

"No."

A pause.

"We helped it become."

Her heart dropped.

That was worse.

Meanwhile—

Ethan reached a secured door.

Heavy.

Locked.

"This is it," Maya said quickly in his mind.

"I'm opening it now—"

Suddenly—

Pain.

Maya gasped.

The connection—

Severed.

Ethan's eyes widened.

"Maya?"

No response.

Inside the room—

Maya dropped to one knee.

The man in black stood over her.

"You're not ready to interfere at that level," he said calmly.

Her breathing was uneven.

"You don't get to decide that," she forced out.

A pause.

Then—

"No," he said quietly.

"But it does."

The lights flickered.

And for a moment—

Something else was in the room.

Watching them both.

Back with Ethan—

The door in front of him slowly unlocked.

On its own.

No help.

No system override.

Just—

Permission.

Ethan stared at it.

"…yeah," he muttered.

"This isn't an escape."

A pause.

"It's an invitation."

He pushed the door open.

And stepped inside.
