Chapter 40 - Chapter 41: When Minds Begin to Merge

It started with silence.

Not the normal kind.

This one felt… shared.

Maya sat on the cold edge of her bed, staring at nothing.

But her mind—

Her mind wasn't empty.

It was crowded.

Thoughts that weren't fully hers.

Feelings that didn't belong completely.

And one presence—

That refused to leave.

"You felt it too."

The voice came softly.

Not from the room.

Not from the system.

From inside.

Maya's breath slowed.

"I told you to stay out of my head," she whispered.

A pause.

Then—

"You opened the door."

Her jaw tightened.

"And I'll close it."

Silence.

Then—

"No."

Her chest tightened slightly.

But before she could respond—

Something else happened.

A flash.

Sharp.

Sudden.

Not a vision.

Not a memory.

A connection.

Maya gasped—

And suddenly—

She wasn't in her room anymore.

She was somewhere else.

Cold.

Dim.

Familiar.

Ethan's room.

Her eyes widened slightly.

But she wasn't there physically.

She was seeing through him.

Ethan stood still in the center of the room, his head slightly lowered.

Like he felt something too.

"…Maya?" he said quietly.

Her breath caught.

He could feel her.

"I didn't do this," she said quickly.

But her voice—

Didn't come out of her mouth.

It echoed inside his head.

Ethan's body tensed.

"Yeah," he muttered.

"Figured that."

A strange silence settled between them.

Not awkward.

Not distant.

Connected.

"…can you see what I see?" Maya asked slowly.

Ethan didn't answer immediately.

Then—

"Yes."

Her heart started beating faster.

Because that meant—

This wasn't one-sided.

It was shared.

"Origin," Ethan said under his breath.

The word alone made the air feel heavier.

"It's pushing this," Maya replied.

A pause.

Then—

"Or testing it."

Ethan moved slightly, pacing once.

And Maya felt it.

Not just saw it.

Felt it.

The movement.

The tension.

The weight in his chest.

Her breath hitched.

"This is bad," she whispered.

"No," Ethan said quietly.

A pause.

"Not yet."

She frowned slightly.

"What do you mean?"

Silence.

Then—

"It's not forcing us."

That made her pause.

"…you're right," she said slowly.

Because if Origin wanted—

It could have taken control already.

But it didn't.

It was waiting.

Letting them feel it.

Understand it.

"Why?" Maya asked softly.

And this time—

The answer didn't come from Ethan.

It came from something else.

"Because you will choose it."

Both of them froze.

The voice echoed—

In both of their minds.

Ethan's expression darkened instantly.

"No," he said coldly.

Maya's fists clenched.

"We're not yours."

A pause.

Then—

"You are becoming mine."

Suddenly—

Pain.

Sharp.

Violent.

Maya cried out, clutching her head.

At the same time—

Ethan dropped to one knee.

Their minds—

Colliding.

Memories overlapping.

Maya saw flashes of Ethan's past—

Blood.

Fire.

A younger version of him screaming—

Experiments gone wrong.

Ethan—

Saw her.

Not just now.

Before.

A lab.

Bright lights.

Her lying still.

A voice saying—

"She's the perfect match."

Both of them gasped—

And the connection snapped.

Maya collapsed back onto her bed, breathing hard.

Ethan slammed his fist lightly against the floor, grounding himself.

Silence.

Heavy.

Real again.

"…did you see that?" Maya whispered.

Ethan didn't respond immediately.

Then—

"…yeah."

Her chest tightened.

"They've been planning this longer than we thought," she said.

Ethan exhaled slowly.

"Yeah."

A pause.

"Since before we even met."

Silence settled again.

But this time—

It wasn't confusion.

It was realization.

"We're not just part of this," Maya said quietly.

"We're the end goal."

Ethan's expression hardened.

"Then we break it before it gets there."

For the first time in a long time—

They were on the same side again.

Even if they weren't in the same place.

Even if something was trying to pull them together—

In a way neither of them wanted.

Maya closed her eyes slowly.

"Then we do it together."

Ethan didn't hesitate.

"Yeah."

A small pause.

Then—

"Together."

But deep inside—

Something else moved.

Watching.

Waiting.

Because now—

The connection was open.

And it wasn't going to close easily.
