Chapter 4 - V1 Ch2- The Painful Past...

Chapter 2 – The Past Revealed

(Care's POV)

First Lecture

The classroom was quiet. The exchange students—Riya, Kabir, Sana, and Mehul—sat across from me, their eyes occasionally flicking toward me. They had recognized me yesterday, yes, but now the moment had changed. I didn't want to let them fumble.

I waited until the lecture began, letting the teacher speak, letting the routine of school mask the tension in my chest. But inside, my heart was pounding. The first few minutes passed, and I finally spoke softly.

"Let's meet in the cafeteria at lunch," I said, calm, deliberate. "We need to talk."

Their eyes widened slightly, guilt—or something close to it—shining faintly in their expressions. They nodded.

Cole glanced at me sharply. His jaw was tight. Daisy leaned back, curious. Ben smirked slightly, not yet understanding the weight of what was coming.

Lunch — The Conversation

The cafeteria smelled like fried rice and fresh bread, but I hardly noticed. I sat at our usual table, Cole and Ben on either side of me, Daisy across, and Nova quietly beside me. The exchange students approached, hesitant, their steps slow.

I motioned to the empty seats. "Sit," I said, voice calm but firm. "It's time we talked."

Riya, Sana, Kabir, and Mehul sat, faces pale. They avoided my eyes, and I understood why.

I took a breath, letting the words come carefully, but with all the truth I'd held in for years.

"You left me," I said softly, almost whispering at first. "You didn't realize it at the time. You thought I was strong, untouchable… perfect. And maybe I looked like that on the outside."

Their heads lowered. Kabir swallowed nervously.

"But I wasn't," I continued. "When my father died, I was ten. Ten years old. My family… they weren't there for me. They didn't care. I had no one. And you… my friends… the ones I trusted, the ones I thought would be my anchor… you left. You changed schools, moved on, and I stayed behind… alone. Completely alone in the dark. And I had to survive."

Sana's hands trembled slightly on the table. Riya's lips quivered. Mehul looked down, ashamed.

"I didn't blame you then," I said, voice steadier now. "I couldn't. I had to survive. I had to keep going. I became who I am… by myself."

The silence stretched for a moment. Then Cole's head snapped up. His eyes were dark, flashing with anger.

"How could you leave her like that?" he shouted, voice cutting through the cafeteria chatter. "All those years… she was alone. Struggling. And you just… left!"

Riya's eyes welled up with tears. "Cole… we didn't know… we were scared—"

"You were scared?!" Cole's voice cracked, sharp, full of fury. "She was ten! Ten! And you abandoned her when she needed you most!"

Ben's hand tightened on the table. Daisy leaned forward, visibly uncomfortable. The entire table seemed to shrink under Cole's eruption.

I stayed calm, controlling my own emotions. "I survived," I said softly. "I learned to. But… I wanted you to understand. I wanted you to see what it felt like… to be left behind. And maybe now… we can move forward."

Sana sobbed quietly. Riya reached over and grasped her hand. Mehul shifted, ashamed.

Cole's fists clenched, knuckles white. "You knew she was alone… and you didn't care enough to stay?" he muttered, voice low now, seething.

I looked at all of them. "I'm not angry anymore. I forgive you. But I want honesty. And if you can't do that… stay quiet."

Cole exhaled sharply, jaw still tight, but his anger simmered down, replaced by that fierce protective instinct he always had for me.

Daisy's lips pressed together. Ben nodded slowly, understanding the gravity of what had been revealed.

Nova reached over, resting her hand lightly on mine. Silent support.

I glanced at my phone. A message popped up from Lyra:

"Care! I'm coming for vacation! Can't wait to see you! Also, I'll be getting admission in your school next semester. Finally together again!"

I smiled faintly. Lyra… my constant. The one who had never left.

I looked back at the group. "We can start over," I said, calm. "But you need to know… this is the truth. And it's heavy. But I… I forgive you."

For the first time in years, the cafeteria felt lighter. Not because the past was gone, but because I had finally said it out loud.
