The Shadow of the Empire
The British soldiers are at the door. The sound of their heavy boots on the wooden porch is like a drumbeat of doom. Inside the hut, Anirudha's heart is pounding, but he looks at Mahatma Gandhi, who remains as calm as a deep ocean.
Gandhi gestures for Anirudha to hide behind a stack of grain sacks. When the British officer bursts in, he finds only an old man spinning yarn on a Charkha. The officer, confused by Gandhi's peaceful presence, searches the room but misses the hidden student. As they leave, Gandhi whispers to Anirudha, "Non-violence is the greatest weapon, but it requires the greatest courage."
