Chapter 7 - Chapter 7

The academy bell rang earlier than usual.

Kai rolled out of bed, Bouncy sliding off his blanket with a soft plop. Zephyr fluttered down from the window beam, already awake.

Theo groaned from the other bed. "Why does field day start at sunrise…"

"Because beasts don't sleep in," Kai said with a grin.

By the time they reached the courtyard, the first-years were lined up in teams of four. Instructor Lena stood at the front, hands behind her back.

"Today is your first field assignment. Nothing dangerous. You'll enter the outer academy forest in teams and collect Spirit Bloom petals. They grow near low-tier beasts. Work together. Observe. Don't rush."

She began reading team names.

"Kai Harlan. Aria Flint. Theo Marsh. Renn Calder."

A small ripple of murmurs spread through the group.

Kai blinked. That was… interesting.

Renn folded his arms. "Great."

Aria shot Kai an amused look. "Guess we're stuck together."

Theo adjusted his glasses quietly. "Let's just not die."

Lena handed each team a small wooden token. "If you're in real danger, crush this. It alerts instructors. Otherwise, solve problems yourselves."

The forest felt calmer than the Grove. Birds chirped. Sunlight filtered through leaves.

Aria stretched. "Okay, plan?"

Theo pointed at a simple map. "Spirit Blooms grow near water and shaded areas. Probably by the eastern stream."

Renn scoffed. "Or we could move faster and check higher ground."

Kai glanced between them. "Let's split roles, not directions. Zephyr can scout from above. Theo's owl too. We move together but cover more ground."

There was a pause.

Then Renn shrugged. "Fine. Just don't slow us down."

They walked deeper.

Zephyr darted ahead, circling above. Theo's owl glided more slowly, observing.

After twenty minutes, Zephyr chirped sharply.

Kai looked up. "Found something?"

The sparrow swooped down, landing near a cluster of glowing blue flowers by the streambank.

"Spirit Blooms," Aria said, eyes lighting up.

But something else moved near the water.

Three vine-wrapped creatures, like walking bundles of roots with glowing yellow eyes, shifted protectively around the flowers.

"Rootlings," Theo whispered. "Low-tier forest beasts. Territorial."

Renn stepped forward. "Good. Finally something real."

"Wait," Kai said quickly. "We don't need to fight hard. Just distract and collect."

Aria nodded. "Ember can draw one away with fire sparks."

Theo added, "My owl can create a flash distraction."

Renn crossed his arms. "Or Fang can just charge through."

Kai met his eyes calmly. "We're a team today."

For a moment, tension hung in the air.

Then Renn sighed. "Fine. Team."

They moved into position.

Aria snapped her fingers. Ember shot small bursts of flame to the side. One Rootling shuffled after it, hissing softly.

Theo's owl flapped low, creating a sudden flash of reflected sunlight. Another Rootling turned toward it.

That left one guarding the flowers.

"Bouncy," Kai whispered. "Soft spin."

The slime rolled forward, wind swirling gently. Not aggressive. Just enough to stir leaves.

The Rootling swayed uncertainly.

Renn seized the opening. "Fang, push!"

The wolf darted in, nudging the creature aside without biting. It stumbled back into the shallow stream.

"Now!" Aria called.

Kai grabbed several Spirit Bloom petals carefully. Theo helped gather the rest.

Within seconds, they retreated.

The Rootlings regrouped but didn't pursue far.

They had their petals.

Aria grinned. "That was smooth."

Theo nodded. "Efficient."

Renn looked at Kai, expression unreadable. "You think too much."

Kai smiled. "Better than not thinking at all."

But before they could relax, the ground trembled lightly.

Zephyr shrieked a warning from above.

From behind the trees emerged something larger, a Mossback Boar, twice the size of Fang. Thick moss covered its back like armor. Its tusks scraped against a tree trunk.

Theo swallowed. "That's not low-tier."

"Probably attracted by the Rootlings' agitation," Aria said quickly.

The boar snorted, pawing the ground.

Renn stepped forward instinctively. "Fang can take it."

Kai grabbed his arm. "Not alone."

The Mossback charged.

"Scatter!" Aria yelled.

The team split.

The boar barreled toward Renn and Fang first.

"Bouncy, wind boost!" Kai commanded.

Bouncy shot forward, bouncing hard into the boar's side. Wind pushed the impact stronger than usual. The boar staggered but kept moving.

"Zephyr, eyes!" Kai called.

The sparrow dove low, gusting wind directly into the boar's face. It blinked furiously.

Theo's owl created another flash, disorienting it further.

"Ember, heat the moss!" Aria shouted.

A controlled stream of flame brushed the boar's back. Steam rose as damp moss shrank.

"Now, Fang!" Renn yelled.

The wolf darted in, biting gently at the softened moss, not flesh, destabilizing balance.

The boar stumbled, momentum breaking.

Kai made a split-second decision.

"Moonlight infusion."

Bouncy shimmered silver mid-bounce. It launched straight at the boar's forehead, not violent, but firm, leaving a calming glow.

The boar froze.

Its breathing slowed.

For a tense second, no one moved.

Then the Mossback let out a low grunt… and backed away slowly into the trees.

Silence filled the clearing.

Aria blinked. "Did you just… calm it?"

Kai looked at Bouncy, surprised himself. "I think so."

Theo exhaled heavily. "That could've gone badly."

Renn scratched Fang behind the ears. "We handled it."

He glanced at Kai again. This time there was no sarcasm.

"Good call."

It wasn't praise. But it wasn't hostility either.

As they headed back toward the academy, petals secured safely, Kai felt something warm flicker inside his chest.

[Heart Gauge: 71%]

Not from power.

From teamwork.

Maybe this was what balance meant.

But as they crossed back through the academy gates, Kai didn't notice the faint shimmer in the tower window above.

The cloaked figure was still watching.

And this time, the crystal lens glowed brighter.
